ayman mohyeldin has been covering the story from the first moments. rmation? >> reporter: yeah. we want to bring you up to speed on what local israeli media are reporting. from two credible israeli news organizations. reporting that the individual who was shot was involved in a stabbing, an attempted stabbing on an israeli police checkpoint. and then ultimately tried to evade them. as he was evading them, that's when they opened fire. what i saw and where we were as we were preparing to broadcast live for your show, josÉ, we saw him as he was evading and coming across the corner from the checkpoint. i didn't witness him stab anybody, but i heard the israeli police shout at him to stop. he did not. he made it halfway down the stairs into the well that leads to the old city before he was shot. at that point both the israeli security presence here and the police that's further down at the damascus gate opened fire on the suspect. this happened about 35 minutes ago. and, again, now israeli media, local israeli media, are reporting that the individual wasvo

msnbc's ayman mohyeldin is in jerusalem with the latest. ayman, describe the tenor of the day. as i pointed out, you thousand have an escalated situation and even more security. >> reporter: yeah. i mean, the sun is setting here on the old city. we've moved our camera position a little further off from the damascus gate to give you a different perspective of the scene where that shooting happened yesterday. this was at the checkpoint right here. and you can see the israeli police have set up barricades limiting the access into the old city. they've stopped occasionally young palestinian men that are going in and out of it to check them, check their i.d.s. but at the same time, it seems to be for today -- for now today a relatively quiet scene. there haven't been any major incidents so far. there was earlier, though, in tel aviv a large manhunt after israeli security forces were tipped off, it seems, about a possible attack. and as a result of that, israeli security forces deployed helicopters, large -- launched a large manhunt looking for those suspects. ultimately two individu

msnbc's ayman mohyeldin is still at the scene and joins us now live from jerusalem. ayman, what's happening now and also the climate, heightened security? what's been happening for several weeks now there? >> reporter: right now the situation here is relatively calm. the police have once again taken up their position where this incident happened a short while ago. just to give you a little bit of context, right now individuals from the municipality are cleaning up the scene where that individual was killed. according to israeli police, and now that we have seen the footage, he was carrying a knife on him. it happened at about 3:00 p.m. local time. an individual coming around the corner here from where we are standing and we were about to go live. we were broadcasting live. police ordered this individual to stop as they have been doing with several other palestinian men going through the area. this individual did not stop. evaded police. according to israeli police, he attempted to stab one of them. it was at that point he ran down the stairs here in the amphitheater

by a security guard, then attacked by a mob of bystanders, joining me with the latest, msnbc's ayman mohyeldin how this ends or what the circuit breaker is but tell me what they are trying to do on the ground. >> reporter: well, right now it is a situation that remains very fluid, remains very tense. the israeli police have announced an investigation. they are searching for those individuals, israeli individuals who were involved in that mob attack on that man following the security guard shooting. we understand from at least israeli local media that the security guard will not be investigated for mistaking the identity of that eritrean man as a possible second attacker but the individuals involved in the attack afterwards, the kicking, the spitting and throwing furniture at him, then ultimately possibly even blocking the ambulance from leaving, are being sought after by israeli police. it does cut to the core of just how tense the situation is here. and it also underscores just the growing problem. on one hand you have the palestinian authority saying that israel is taking these vigilante mov

msnbc's ayman mohyeldin is in jerusalem and witnessed one of the events firsthand yesterday. hings have changed or not changed in these last 24 hours. >> reporter: yeah, well, certainly not a lot has changed at least on the ground. there have been no incidents today, but the country still very much on edge. you talked about that incident that took place in tel aviv. quite a large show of force by the israeli security forces, deploying a helicopter, launching what they described as a large manhunt for two people that ended up being nothing, really. we understand that those two individuals have been released, but it does give you a sense of just how jittery the country is and certainly how much it is on edge. now, across the country ordinary folks have been describing for us just the overall atmosphere in the country. a lot of folks very nervous about riding on buses, riding on public transportation. and that is precisely one of the challenges that the government here is facing with, how to try to restore a sense of calm and order. one thing that is certainly not helping is what
