nbc foreign correspondent, ayman mohyeldin joins me now. man, what are we hearing so far about the agreement? it's not a cease-fire in aleppo, but tell me about it. it's an end or putting down of arms? >> it seems like what we're hearing right now is from multiple sources. let's start with the most definitive, that is coming out of the russian ambassador to the united nations. the u.n. ambassador stopped and spoke to reporters and said he expects a cessation of military operations. he is referencing a unilateral decision that was made by both the syrian military and the russian air force. so that is, perhaps, the strongest indication that we're getting that there is going to be a cessation of operations from the syrian and russian militaries in eastern aleppo. what we are also hearing on the ground, from syrian activists, is that they are planning an evacuation of the families of the fighters, as well as those individuals and others that are trapped in the eastern part of aleppo in this enclave that has been besieged. they are willing to do

ayman mohyeldin is here with more. this is the flight that went down over the mediterranean, may 19th. all 66 people onboard. what are they saying they found? >> what they're saying, this is an investigation that has been ongoing for several months, after they repocovered the bodi. they have been able to trace explosives on some of the human remains. they haven't identified what the nature of the explosives are. what this gives us, and although the investigative committee which is the central authority investigating this right now, hasn't come out and said this is definitely a bomb, but they're saying explosive residue suggests that it could have been a bomb. that is one of the theories they had been looking into for the past several months. this is a significant development because there were reports early on that there was smoke detected in the plane. there was some belief that it may have been a fire that was accidentally started onboard. the fact they're coming out and saying they have found explosive residue sends

and with me, foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin. we are now seeing the strength anything and reinforcement of the soft targets in the united states. we are at one right now. is that the reality of how we fight this? >> yeah, this is going to be a challenge for security and law enforcement officials going forward for some time to come. because it's not just the soft targets in open public spaces, sideways, people were walking, large crowds, outside our building here at rockefeller center. also shopping malls are big vulnerable targets. you walk the fine line between free dooms adoms and the person liberties. we don't have metal detectors at the shopping malls, but then the question is, how much of your public freedom are you giving up for security. every time you see these attacks you see the needle shift a little. but you are hearing from officials saying they will not compromise on their way of life. they are not going to change their way of life and the things we like to do because of who we are. but at the same time it shows we h

joining us, for more, is ayman mohyeldin. tell us what you know about this gunman?e learned a little more about his identity. he's been identified by turkish authorities, saying he was a 22-year-old policeman. he was part of ankara's riot police, kind of like their -- not like their internal security force, but they're involved in like protests and riot protests and stuff like that. what we don't know yet is motivation. we know that the police have searched his family home. they've also spoken to his roommate, which is also a police officer, to try to establish if there are any links there. they've gone to his family home and detained his family possibly for questioning. no clear identification yet if he has any links to terrorist organizations or whether or not he was just an individual who was disgruntled by what he was saying in his neighboring country, particularly in aleppo, and decided to act out on that. >> and you can see in the video before the shooting, you can see him standing sort of behind the ambassador. do we know, was he working security at the event

. >>> good monday morning, i'm ayman mohyeldin. >> i'm frances rivera. thanks so much for being with us. more grim news over the weekend with the death toll rising. now a criminal investigation has begun into that tragic warehouse party fire that claimed at least 33 lives in oakland, california, on friday night. officials say some of the victims were teenagers. one was the son of authorities are still identifying victims and have not yet made their way through the entire building, which had been housing artists. nbc's stephen luke has the latest in oakland. stephen, what's the latest that we know this morning? >> reporter: well, good morning. you mentioned that criminal investigation under way, and that has a lot of people wondering whether there is some specific piece of information that they have not yet released that's pushed them in that direction or whether it's just out of an abundance of caution. west coast time, most people around the county have gone to sleep and are not waking up. but here behind me, behind those blue tents you see here, it is

joining me now for more is ayman mohyeldin, nbc foreign correspondent.in and other intelligence officials talking about this as a terror attack. what do we know? >> at this stage, not much, officially, as you were just saying. the german police or the berlin police that were leading this investigation have not come out and definitively say one way or another that this is a terrorist attack. they are trying to establish a motivation. they have an individual believed to be the driver in custody. they're certainly going to try to piece together, what is the connection between that individual and the truck. one of the interesting pieces of information that we've learned within the last couple of hours has to do about the ownership of that truck that was used in that incident. and we believe, according to our reporting, that it is a company out of poland. we've tried to make contact with the owner of that company, who has told us that it is a relative of his who was the person driving that car. now, whether or not that truck may have been stolen while it was

i want to bring in nbc news foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin. we know that the german prosecutor's office is in touch with their italian counterparts. talk about the cooperation now between these police agencies that needs to happen and the next steps moving forward. >> there's no doubt about it. first of all they're going to try and absolutely verify the identity of anis amri. they're going to check his dna, fingerprints, make sure all of that is, in fact, what the germans have at the scene of the crime there in berlin. make sure all of that adds up. and more importantly they're going to try to piece together the journey that he made from berlin to italy over the past several days since this incident happened. they want to try to make sure that there are no accomplices involved that help him escape. keep in mind if he was traveling from berlin to italy throughout all of this ordeal did he buy a ticket? did he take a train? did he drive a car? who drove that car? whose car was it? did he rent it? there are a lot of questions in the investigation

. >> i'm ayman mohyeldin. a busy couple hours overnight with this manhunt that began after one police officer was killed and another critically won'ted after a shootout near the georgia southwestern university campus. police released this wanting poster offering a $50,000 reward to capture minguell lembrick. kerry sanders has the story. >> an urgent manhunt under way. the suspect, minguell lembrick, accused of shooting two police officers. >> this is a very dangerous individual. we need to have him off the streets. >> 9:40 a.m., the officers responding to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex when shots were fired, the officer hit, and lembrick took off. a nearby golf course, area schools and georgia southwestern university on lockdown. a digital message sent to those on campus at gsw, police secure all doors and windows. >> within minutes of the call, our campus was on lockdown. >> killed officer nicholas smarr, 25 years old. four years on the america's police force. the other officer, four-year veteran

for the latest we turn to nbc's foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin.he head of the aleppo security committee said the rebels have to surrender or die. how much longer would the battle last? >> the momentum is on the side of the syrian military with the milit militias. no doubt momentum has been on their side for a month with the russian bombard. of the eastern part of aleppo. they have gained so much territory within the last month, wrestling it away from rebel held territory. all suggestions on the ground is it will not be long before the syrian military is completely able and capable of over running those rebel strong holds. already thousands of people, tens of thousands of people on the screen leaving neighborhoods once controlled by the rebels to try to find refuge elsewhere in other parts of the city. for now it seems the syrian military and government will reclaim parts if not all of the parts that are held by the rebels within the coming weeks, perhaps. >> while the syrian government's focus is on aleppo it appears isis militants used that preoc

people are dead, 50 injures, many seriously, after a truck ran into an outdoor christmas market, ayman mohyeldinoins me now. no credit has been taken yet, but does it look like a terror attack? >> it looks like a terror attack because it has the hallmarks of what we have seen in previous attacks, particularly that in nice back in the celebration in july. all of the officials in terms of those statements coming out of the united states have suggested this is a terrorist attack. the investigation at least from what we're hearing from berlin officials and german officials is it probably is a terrorist attack. in terms of whether it was directed by isis, whether its this individual, whoever it may be, was somehow transplanted by the terror organization into germany, that remains to be seen. we don't know that yet. i think what it really underscores is the vulnerability and the fear that we have in western societies that some of the soft targets, the public gathering spaces and the crudeness of this, the fact it was a vehicle, a truck used by an individual to kill these people, shows how vulnerable s

nbc's foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin joins me with more. significant is this. >> a very significant development. probably one of the most significant in the last several years since the begin of the civil war. poised to set the favor in favor of president assad. this is a stronghold of rebels they were using to launch attacks in other parts of the country. now, the the regime is able to capture the entirety of the city, they would control the two largest cities of the country. more importantly, they would control the western part of the country and really put the u.s.-backed rebels on their back heel. perhaps sending a decisive blow to the end of the conflict. it's more likely going to bring them to the negotiating table. it's created a humanitarian disaster, for the most part, it's set to shore up president assad's hold on the country and forced the rebels backed by the u.s. and other countries to perhaps come to the negotiating table. we're starting to get glimpses of that with the u.s. trying to negotiate with the russians a safe passage
