in the united states drug companies can pretty much charge whatever they want. when a new drug is patented, it's protected from competition for 20 years. there are all kinds of exclusive marketing rights the fda grants as well. they are really good at making little tweaks to their products so they can keep extending the windows. that's why it takes so long for cheaper generic versions to get on the market. remember, though, it's expensive to develop new drugs, and the industry will tell you it takes about ten years on average with a price tag on average of $2.6 billion per medicine. take funding away and they wouldn't be able to put money toward research and development. it argues the pharmacy benefit managers who negotiate prices for health plans, they don't pass discounts on to consumers. then the insurance industry just points right back at big pharma for pricing drugs so high in the first place. you get the idea. they blame each other. in the meantime, spending on prescriptions keeps rising. it's forecast to grow 6% a year through 2026. that's faster than anything else in health care. john? the bad blood there is real between -- the candidates probably have moved on, but the staff, you have these fights with the staff. clinton people this week putting out word that bernie sanders demanded a private jet. that's what he's responding to at the end there saying, i did everything i could for them. why can't they just let it go? >> well, infra-party battles, if you back to carter and kennedy in '88, that hangover lasted for many, many years, as we know. these things get very intense. >> we know. >> they get -- and particularly at the staff level. those resentments last for a long time. i think the challenge for sanders in this case is he's in a different position today than he was in 2016. he was the scrappy underdog. he is now near the top of the polls. he has the experience of it, he has a network, he has an infrastructure. he has to think of himself in a different way and in a sense carry himself in a different way. if he allows himself to get kind of pulled down into that old 2016, you know, back and forth with the clintonites, it's not going to help him at all in his real goal. >> there is a particular feeling among clinton aides, and dan is absolutely right, there is nothing new here under the sun in terms of staff fighting about nothing in particular. the difference is there is the intensity of it, the degree around the wikileaks e-mail dumps, around the comey press conference, the e-mail investigation. there are a lot of scars that those folks still point to, and that they, i think, don't want to let people forget in part because i think they legitima legitimately are concerned about how 2020 will go, both in terms of outside influence and media coverage. i think all of that adds to this. i think dan's point is the key one which is bernie sanders is in a very different position. he unquestionably has influenced this field. you have so many people running on ideas that he espoused first on a national level. but he is going to have to change how he relates to democrats in his field, and i don't know that he's there yet. >> the he's not a democrat part, that's fair, he is an independent. he traveled on the road saying he had an important role in a one-on-one race last time, and now -- you get that. >> i think it will be interesting to see how warren differentiates herself from sanders, right? >> i think andy maccabe should have been arrested. while he was serving as at acting director of the fbi from the day jim comey was appointed until bob mueller was appointed. he lied three times under oath to the inspector general. he had been referred for criminal referral. he's the highest ranking fbi official other than jim comey to be fired from the agency. all of a sudden this spokesperson is walking back his statement. but we know because we have independent verification that deputy attorney general rod rosenstein recommended wearing a wire. and jim comey and andy mccabe seriously considered invoking the amendment to remove the president because they didn't like his politics. they used their badges to spy on americans because they didn't like our politics. susan: even the interviewer pushed back as well. >> there were meetings at the justice department in which it was discussed whether vice president and a majority of the cabinet could be brought together to remove the president of the united states under the 25th amendment. they were speculating this person would be with us, that person would not be, and they were counting noses in that effort. it was also said at a previous time that the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein offered a wear a wire. susan: it pretty much says he said what he said. why walk it back at this point? >> that's a great question, susan. shows the subtlety of the strategy. of course, you need the aid to relieve the suffering of the venezuelan people. but, the aid in many ways as a weapon. first of all, the idea that venezuelan opposition will be the one that delivers aid to the border of the three crossing points, it reinforces to the venezuelans that the real power rest with the opposition, not with maduro. secondly, and equally important, by delivering aid to the border, it is an opportunity to smoke out the military. can you imagine the young privates standing on the border whose relatives are starving. they have to be the one who has to shoot their own countrymen to prevent aid from coming into the country? here's the third thing, it's a subtle way of telling other countries in the region, like brazil and columbia, that the united states is going to approach this with soft, not hard power. remember, almost 30 years ago we put paratroopers into panama to get rid of that evil regime. now, we are using soft power, humanitarian aid, and sanctions to push maduro out. >> susan: but does that work?
