>> yes. absolutely. always. >> how are you and adrienne do? >> who? >> that's how we're going to start, okay. let's talk about the book. you wrote most of it four years ago at a time when your marriage was breaking up. do you regret anything you put in there now that you would like to have out of there if you could do it again? >> no. i was very angry, obviously, four years ago when i wrote the book. there were things in there that i did take out because i was so mad like, oorks maybe that's too much of a low blow. and also the lawyers had me take some things out as well. >> obviously, you were mad at your ex-husband, who left you essentially for leann rhymes. among other things you call him a made for tv actor, a pretty face, not a talented actor. i understand and a lot of people would understand why you're angry, but he is the father of your two kids. >> right. >> is it appropriate to put that out there in public? >> you know, i don't know if i do everything that's appropriate in life. the fact of the matter is, that is my opinion and one day all of this will be available for my kids to read and i think what they're going to take away from it is that throughout this entire time, i've never said a bad word about their dad in front of them. they ask if we can go and all move into a house together. i'm like, sure, just talk to your dad. >> they're going to be at the age soon where they'll see this online and see what you said about their father. >> not at my house. we have parental controls. they can't google certain things. >> eventually. >> eventually, they will, for sure. >> we reached out to eddie and he gave us a statement. quote, i certainly wish i handled some of the choices i made four years ago differently. but i have been conscious of the choices i have made since. this exploitive book, intended to hurt leann and me will ultimately only hurt and scar my kids. that deeply saddens and concerns me. do you worry about the kids? >> that's all i worry about. with eddie not working and me having to pay my own bills, this book will help me do that. the fact that, unfortunately, i had to write this book, i have to pay the bills. he's not doing that for me. >> what's your relationship like with eddie right now? >> we don't have one now. >> you don't speak at all? >> no. >> you don't see him in the course of dropping the kids off or picking the kids up? >> no. >> you did have a relationship not long ago. how did that deteriorate of late? >> unfortunately, you know, she -- leann went to rehab. and i was very concerned for my children, what was going on over at that house. why that had to happen. and i didn't get any answers. and i got very angry. you know, it's my children's stepmother. so, if she's checking into rehab for stress and anxiety and says she's crying every day, i need to know my kids are okay when they're with them. so that kind of started the ugly back and forth again and, you know, there was a time when we were good. i had them over for easter. it was just them, me and the kids for an easter egg hunt. it's difficult. >> what are your concerns when your kids are over there, given what you said about leann and eddie? what do you think is happening there that should concern you? >> i don't know. if someone is checking into rehab clearly there's some sort of issues going on. i want to make sure that's not affecting my children. >> you write in the book of leann rhymes, among other things, call her a washed up country singer. child stars are just the worst. throughout their careers no one tells them knno. they think they can take anything they want without repercussions. you're talking, of course, about i don't you are husband. you've had this twitter war. she says she wants to move on and you won't let her. >> i don't tweet leann. i try to leave them out of my timeline. i really do. >> do you feel that you and leann will ever have a relationship because of the kids that can be at least stable, something that will help the children? >> i hope so. i think once leann has a child of her own and understands kind of boundaries and what's okay and what's respectful as far as, you know, being a parent goes that she and i will hopefully be okay. i hope so. >> do you think this book does anything to forward that relationship? >> no. >> how about the relationship with your husband? >> my husband? i'm not married. >> your ex-husband, excuse me. excuse me. >> no. >> and you're okay with that? >> i'm okay with that. >> so are you okay with having no relationship from this moment forward with eddie or leann? the book is called stranded. we should also mention he is the host of the jeff probst show as well. good morning to you. >> good morning gnatry. >> nice to have you back who are. >> thanks for having me. >> people have long asked why not do a survivor series for kids? >> survivor is such a family show. that's what they say, when are you going to do one for kids? since we have not yet dropped an 8, 9, 10, 11-year-old on an isla island, we thought we'll write the book, put the kids in there. could you find food, build shelter, build a fire? >> this is such a blended story. you bring your own personal experience in this as well. when you married lisa, she had two kids to add to the family. >> she brought these two amazing little kids who were so -- they were young enough they were excited to have another dad in their life. we went looking for fiction. and there's nothing out there, virtually nothing. so this is a story of a mom and dad who each bring two kids and say let's send them out on a sailing trip to get to know each other. a storm comes in and -- >> they're shipwrecked. >> and they're stranded. >> and they don't always get along, right? >> no. because they don't even know each other yet. what survivor does and what "stranded" does, it forces you to work together through the conflict. and there's three books in this series. so they get to know each other. then they learn how to is your voiv and ultimately are trying to get rescued. >> they each have a skill set. one is good at lighting fires, the other is good at hunting, finding water. >> the kids are very different. one is kind of a couch potato that watches survivor shows. the other is more of the athlete. there's two girls. one is the gatekeeper and journalist. each of them bring their different skills in over the course of the journey, which is why i say it is survivor for kids. it's the same idea. >> did you bring sort of that blended family experience to this as well, allowing them to go through the challenges as -- >> yes. >> -- kids growing up in that environment? >> yes. that is the point. they are really going to mature quickly. but also they're going to learn that this new brother i have, maybe he's not so bad after all. maybe he actually brings something into my life, in the way that kids do. first usually by saying i don't know if i like you so much or not. the big part of the story is adventure. it is full-on survivor adventure. >> this is the age group of 8 to 10. >> 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, yeah. the characters are 8 to 13. so right in that range. >> and we know that it continues. you said it's the first of three. they're still stranded? floating biohazard . is there an open bar? >> there better be. captioning funded by cbs >>> i'm charlie rose with gayle king and nora o'donnell. north korea conducted its third nuclear test this morning. the u.n. security council will meet to discuss the issue. the minority said it detonated a lighter miniaturized nuclear test. >> the test defies an u.n. order to shut down nuclear activities. north korea is promising what it calls measures of greater intensity. president obama is calling the test high low provacative. and -- highly provacative. and the president said the nuclear weapon and ballistic missile program constitutes a threat to u.s. and international security. cbs news is reporting that the president will discuss north korea's nuclear test during the state of the union address. >>> a vatican spokesman revealed new details this morning about the pope's health. the news comes a day after benedict's surprise announcement of his resignation. allen pizzey's in vatican city with more on what's leading the phone step down. >> reporter: declining health may have been a major f facintroducing pope benedict xvi's decision to step down. he's been wearing a pacemaker for several years and had an operation barely three months ago to change the battery. add that to the strain of dealing with the sex abuse scandal and it took a toll. another thing that came out, last august the pope ordered work to begin on renovating an old can vent building any -- convent building at vatican city where he's going to live. his last major public performance will be ash wednesday. he cannot take part in the conclave, however. that has to be done by the cardinal without his influence at all. >> monsignor fig uerido joins us from vatican city. good morning. >> good morning. good afternoon from rome. >> are you there in rome. yes. >> good afternoon indeed. >> yes. and what's going on there now? the vatican? >> yesterday took us by great surprise. we were shocked with the announcement. so in a real sense, we can say that the future of the church is in the hearts and minds of catholics and non-catholics around the world. it's an exciting time for the church, an exciting time to be in rome. we're full of anticipation for what's going to be happening. >> there's some that suggest that there's also a contest within the church. one is about geography. the other is about smaller church, more doctrinaire, and a larger expanding church reaching out to members. >> yes, charlie. you know, the college of cardinals now is really made up of a diverse group of people. 61 i believe from europe. there's 19 from latin america, 14 from north america, split between asia and africa. geographically, yes, diversity. i think the pope himself has wanted to go out geographically encouraging new cardinals from a wide range of countries to come in. we're always going to have doctrinal issues. those who want to stay with the second vatican council, those who want to go back before the second vatican council. at the end of the day this is the point of having a conclave. that we discuss the issues and that the cardinals agree this is the man to take the church forward in the present time which pope benedict himself said yesterday in his statement pressing times, pressing questions, with rapid changes. so we need a new man for the times -- this is why it's such an important and exciting time. >> this makes up the largest catholic population. i hear many latin americans saying this is our time. how likely is that, do you think? >> i think that every single cardinal has a possibility. we have been surprised now twice over. first with a pope from poland. a great pope, pope john paul, and pope benedict xvi, also great pope from germany. both were surprises. certainly in latin america there are enormous challenges and enormous opportunities. large numbers of the faithful who are deserting the church. we need to bring them back. in fact, pope benedict had a trip scheduled to brazil this summer for world youth day. that's going to be a significant moment. certainly the cardinals will be looking to north latin america, too, as one of the candidates. >> quickly monsignor, i don't know if you see the photo of lightning striking st. peter's just 24 hours after the announcement. was this some sort of sign? >> well, certainly -- i live just a couple of minutes here. i saw it myself. i'm a witness. and i think the holy -- god himself was saying to us, these are going to be exciting times for the church. i am with you, i am present with you, and did not be afraid to go forward and make the right and the best decision for the church and indeed for the world. >> that's what thought when you saw the sflieng. >> yeah. i was some -- lightning? >> yeah. i was somewhat afraid. it's spectacular. in rome, it is spectacular. brought back image of the veil of the temple being torn in two because something important is about to happen. we shouldn't be afraid of that because when god is present really we can be full of hope and full of confidence that something important, great is going to happen for the church and for the world. let's go ahead. let's move forward. pope benedict xvi got a sign from god himself. >> all right. >> monsignor figueiredo, good to have you in the afternoon from rome. thank you. >> wonderful to be with you. thank you. >>> more with my interview with former vice president dick cheney. an interview you will see only on "cbs this morning." cheney served for two terms with president george w. bush. he says their relationship has changed over the years. someone said to me about your relationship with president bush 43, cordial? >> reporter: good morning, matt. well, it's the usual activity there in st. peter's square with tourists wandering around. nobody really knew about this breaking news. of course, i was there, everybody was right there with the cameras and they were all asking what that was all about. and when we said, actually, the pope is resigning, everybody looked shocked. just as shock ed as we looked this morning when we got the news ourselves. nobody really saw this coming. although, the pope, pope benedict xvi kind of hinted that if he felt that he wasn't strong enough to carry on the important task as the leader of the catholic church, then he would consider resigning. nobody thought he would do that before at least next year because this year is the year of the faith. so, there must be -- he must have felt that really his strength was leaving him all of a sudden to decide or to take such a grave decision -- he even said it himself, that he is fully aware of the gravity of the decision he's taking. obviously, if he has taken this decision, then maybe there are major reasons behind it. >> we are looking at the conclave perhaps early march or middle of march to choose the next pope. claudio lavagne in rome, thank you very much. >>> let's get a check of the weather. al has the latest. >> thank you, savannah. we had a tornado touch down, one of nine yesterday, in hattiesburg, new hampshire. when they go out to view this, the national weather service, i expect this will be an ef-2, possibly an ef-3. thankfully, nobody killed. 50 injured, at least 200 homes and businesses destroyed out of this system. now we're also talking about another system coming in. we've just gotten through a big storm system as we look at the european models, low pressure developing down in louisiana, bringing a lot of rain there. it makes its way to the east coast by wednesday afternoon and then hopefully moves offshore. american models, though, keep it closer to shore, which could mean snow from washington all the way up to boston. we'll have to wait and see. icy conditions today in the northeast. snow up in northern new england. sunshine pacific northwest. rainy conditions in the gulf coast, midatlantic states and snow in the central rockies. that system may cause problems for us by the weekend. >> good morning. just scattered light rain showers expected. otherwise, mostly cloudy and mild. >> that's your latest weather. s savannah? >> he got to a place, it took a long time, to get to tell the story and the kind of life that these guys face after service. >> is he worried about backlash from speaking out? another guy, member of s.e.a.l. team 6 wrote a book, got a lot of criticism. is this guy coming out now to make money off this, profiting from this article? >> he's not going to profit off this article. >> was he made for it? >> he was not paid for it. he is not going to get paid for it. so far he has resisted the idea of writing a book. i'm sure a number of them thought about it, or movie or video games or anything else. he really wanted to tell his story to help his fellow s.e.a.l.s as they leave the service. >> there were 23 s.e.a.l.s there that night. how do we know that this was the one who actually pulled the trigger? >> for the story i did a lot of interviews, talked to a lot of s.e.a.l.s who were still in, some who were retired. i talked to a number of people who were there. i was at a dinner. there was a guy called the mentor in this story who is a mentor to the shooter. we call him the shooter, who was with the cia and navy s.e.a.l.s and he's -- he got a call from a very high official in washington. >> absolutely convinced? >> a couple of hours later saying it was your guy. >> this guy says he was the last one to see osama bin laden alive. here is what he says in the interview. i shot him two times in the forehead. the second time as he was going down. he crumpled on the floor in front of his bed. i hit him again. his tongue was out. i watched him take his last breath and i remember, is this the best thing i've ever done or the worst thing i've ever done? >> think about that. this is what you've just done. you've just killed the world's most wanted terrorist and you have to consider, was this bad or was this good? the good was that he felt he was doing this for the people of new york, for the country. for the s.e.a.l.s. and the bad thing, of course, was the security issue among other things. >> he signs up for four more months and then he leaves the s.e.a.l.s four years short of his 20-year pension time. >> right. >> now this is really the gist of your article, by the way. he feels that he is fighting a completely different kind of battle? >> yes. i work at the center of reporting and we've done fabulous work on v.a. problems. nine month average wait for regular vets to get their disability claim adjudicated. his health care that he got from the military, tri-care, ended the night he left. he gets no pension, none, zero. >> is that because he left four years short of 20? >> yes. if he stayed in at 20rks he would have gotten half his base pay, $2,100 a month. >> which is the same, you point out in the article -- >> in the navy choir. >> the guy in the navy choir gets the exact same pension as the guy we're asking to be the face of warfare around the world is this. >> exactly. >> what about his security? he is the guy who killed osama bin laden. there are a lot of people who would like to exact revenge on him or his family members for that. what is his situation? >> he has no security. obviously he is doing what he needs to do, but he trained his wife to put the kids in the bathtub in their house because it had a reinforcing wall in front of it, should anybody try to get in front of the house. he taught her how to sit on the bed, put a shotgun with her elbow against the wall so she was braced and shoot through the door. >> his job prospects, he cannot go in to a fortune 500 company or anywhere else and say i'm the guy who killed bin laden. give me a job. this neverhappened. >> he also can't talk about anything really. technically, certainly theoretically, this is all private. what you put on your resume when your job has been classified for that long? >> you feel this is a major injustice that's being carried out not just on this navy s.e.a.l. but all the people in this position for years and years and put their lives on the line and then find the transition to private life, civilian life so difficult? >> there's nothing in place -- i mean, the pentagon had some things, department of defense had some things, even special forces. they have a few programs for these guys but mostly they don't know about it. >> is that their fault? is the independepentagon doing but is not widely known? >> v.a. will tell you one pentagon program in particular is not widely known. >> navy s.e.a.l.s continue to fight bravely, accomplishing crit critical mission that is keep our nation safe. the details of the bin laden operation are well known. we take seriously the safety and security of our people as well as our responsibility to assist sailors making the transition to civilian life. without more information about this particular case, it would be difficult to determine the degree to which our transition progr programs succeeded. what's the takeaway? ba da ba ba ba ♪ test. test. test. >>> every day 50 million americans eat fast food but few know just how that food is processed. now we know quite a bit more thanks to the syndicated program called "the doctors," and some of the findings are pretty disturbing. good morning, doctor. >> good morning. the first question do you eat fast food? >> i think everybody does that of course, you do. we are guilty and every now and then you have to splurge. but the problem is that so many people are getting into eating fast food, especially kids as their staple. and i think that's the point that we want to make today. >> we're looking at fried food right here. that's sort of problem number one, isn't it? >> it is. wednesday's show this week is all about the shocking thing ss that are going on with them. and one is saturated fats, trans fat s that create a condition called fatty liver which is pretty serious. they did a study where they fed these people burger and fri and they actually saw -- their liver enzymes change similar to the way your enzymes would change with hepatitis or something like that. >> a big surprise because most people think, fast food bad for cholesterol, bad for the heart, also now bad for the liver. and you say french fries have a specific outcome that's not good? >> french fries are supposed to be potatoes. right? we know they're adding the salt and cooking them in fat, but on top of that, they're putting sugar on it. why the sugar? that helps give it the golden brown crispy. so it's three strikes there. it's the salt. it's the fat, and on top of that throwing a refined sugar on those french fries. >> we're also hearing a lot about the dangers of soda these days, but you guys found it's -- a lot of people think it's the sugar. >> exactly. the first think you think about is the sugar on the teeth, but it's the foss foric acid wearing away the enarmal on your teeth. kpin that combine that with the sugar you're setting yourself up for damaging your teeth. >> some is about advertising too. truth in advertising when they call it fresh or healthy, is it so? >> clearly, it isn't, and that i think we really need to take a closer look at that is how we're labeling foods, and i think we're heading in that direction, and -- >> there are no regulations on those? >> right now there are no regulations and we need them. our kids are just getting bigger and bigger, and making the wrong food choices. we need to do something about that. >> how about salads? because that's something -- a number of women, myself included, have been marketed oh, eat a salad. that's going to help you. in many cases it's not the healthiest thing. >> well it isn't. it depends what you're putting on that salad. in our expose we're talking about some places actually put propylene glycol an the sade, which salad, the keeps it crispy and greener, and although they say a little antifreeze isn't going to hurt you obviously, give an choice, you don't want to be consuming any of that. >> usually on the list of bleu cheese propylene. >> and you go to europe the sal ilds taste so much better. wish we could do that here. >> thank you so much for being with us. >>> coming up next aging baby boomers suddenly unemployed. >> this is what i get in return for 30 years of office for my company and they send some yo-yo like you in here to try to tell me i'm out of a job? they should be telling you you're out a job. >> a real scene for many of us. we'll tell you how older workers can reinvest their careers. you're watching cbs "this morning saturday." >> five years ago e founded it in conjunction with it. it was to focus on women in challenged parts of the world, grassroots organizations that would help lift women up by giving them access to justice, anentrepreneur realan tre pre nurrial training. now i'm so excited to partner with opportunity international because it gives us the chance to leverage our impact across so many more countries and so many more women. the truth is that women are the most underutilized economic resource in the world. they are subjugated and denied opportunity in so many ways burke we know the data's clear. when women are engaged, everything gets better. >> vicki why the focus internationally? why focus on women internationally? >> it's actually not either or. women across the world, you help. you look at a world where half live less on $2 a day and 70% of those are women. it's obvious that the world needs help. you also have to look at the fact that at that 70%, when women have access to capital, they will reinvest 90% of their income back into their homes, their families their communities. our focus is giving women more and more access. we work with 5 million people. we offer savings insurance and training. so it's a combination of those things that not only movie people out of poverty but keep them out of poverty. >> how difficult do you think it is to bust down the door? the majority of college graduates are women and yet you look at the percentage of board members who are women. it's 3 to 4% both here and in europe. why is that still occurring, do you think? >> well first, obviously, we've made a lot of progress in u.s. and europe. there is a lock long way to go. here or in an impoverished village is in everyone's enlightled self-interest. >> would you favor quotas? in europe they actually considered stocking boards with 40% of women by the year 2020. they've been pushing for that. it hasn't gob through, so do you favor quotas? >> what i did is something i did at hewlett-packard which is to demand at every opening, every level, including the board, that a qualified woman is considered. that doesn't even happen. if a qualified woman is consider canned then at least half the time she's going to be picked. but what we're up against in the boardroom is fundamental. most don't know her, haven't worked with her, are afraid to take a risk. >> there's evidence that this makes economic sense. this isn't just a, you know, charity operation. >> the data is clear. poverty, economic development, if you engage a woman, it will get better, if you don't. it won't. the data is monumental now. >> if you look at it together which is microfinanced with other important factors around it insurance is a really big thing for women as is training. so many have not been important. for every dollar invested over 5 years, $6s back in return. >> you're both women who others look up to as role molds. i wonder carly, what do you take from your example and what would you like people to take from your example? [ female announcer ] coffee-mate natural bliss. made with milk cream... a touch of sugar... and pure, natural flavors. coffee-mate natural bliss, from nestle. now try new low fat chocolate. >>> an emotional hand-written letter from an emergency room doctor at new york pressbyterian hospital to the family of a breast cancer paetsch whoent has died has inspired millions of americans. >>> the family posted the letter online and reads in my 20 years as a dock in an emergency room i have never written a letter to a patient or family because we're hurried. houf, in your case i felt a special connection to your wife who was so engaging despite her illness and trouble breathing. aim sorry in your loss and hope you can find comfort in the memory of your wife's great spirit and loving bond. my heartfelt condolences go out to you and your family. >> let's talk about this remarkable letter with cbs kromt doctor doctor, dr. jon lapook. john, good morning. >> good morning. >> first of all, how unusual is a letter like this? >> it's pretty unusual and if you look at the comments online they're split between this is such a beautiful letter and, boy, i wish my doctor could codo something like this. >> i can understand that. you would like to think your doctor has a more personal vested interest. why do doctors sometimes put that wall up? >> i do this myself. you're always building a wall between yourself and your patient. you don't want to make it too thick because then you miss out on the good stuff. you don't want to get too thin and pore russ because then you get caught emotional hi. i try to sculptor it on maybe too thin. >> do you think it will inspire dook tors to make the wall a little thinner? >> i don't know about that. it is an interesting thick that people were so moved. it was a simple act of kindness and i think people in the emergency room think you come in and you're immediately put in a cat scan machine and you're lined up and computers and texting and i'm and nobody thinks about somebodies have a simple relationship with you. by the way, the in fact it was a handwritten letter it harkens back to a time. it shows a certain level of compassion. >> it has to be difficult for doctors you're dealing with not only the pain and suffering of your patient but you see your family. it cannot be easy. >> it is very difficult. i can still remember the first paetsch whoenlt died. i can tell you the name of the person over 30 years later. hopefully you never get to the point where it doesn't mean anything to you. >> it's got to be difficult to decide how to make that choice. if you're going say something or do something like this. >> i think there is a question about giving somebody their privacy too. when you're in the emergency room you're thinking it's busy and you're seeing five patients in an hour. you're taking care of one or two. to take a time to have a relationship with one person, i think it's very moving and a compelling story in this case that this doctor -- and by the way, we don't know a lot of details about it, but the doctor, male or female actually felt so emotionally connected to take the time to write this i found it very moving. >> when do you think the wall gets too wide? >> i think it can get too wide naturally. you cannot open yourself up to every single patient. you would think theoretically that would be the thing to do. there were times when i was slumped at the end of my chair. then you realize, wait a second. i'm not connecting. it's different also in the emergency room. you're seeing the person for a few hours. i see people for 10 20 30 years, so it's not unusual for me to have that kind of relationship, for them to even call me on my cell or for me to know everybody about their family. >> is there a lesson for patients and families as well do you think? >> i think patients should expect a certain level of understanding and compassion and level with their doctor and i think patients are afraid to fire a doctor. i think the emergency room is a special situation. in a general life if your doctor is not connecting with you, you feel they're not listening to you and you feel they don't really care you feel that they're not hurt they're not feeling your pain a little bit, then maybe it's to find another doctor. >>> coming up next the power of positives. procrastination. you're watching "cbs this morning" saturday. when it comes to getting my family to eat breakfast i need all the help i can get. that's why i like nutella. mom, what's the capital of west virginia? charleston. nutella is a delicious hazelnut spread my whole family loves. mom, have you seen my -- backpack? nutella goes great on whole-wheat toast or whole-grain waffles. and its great taste comes from a unique combination of simple ingredients like hazelnuts, skim milk and a hint of cocoa. yeah, bye. have you seen my -- yes. and...thank you.
