not everybody was here for the backpack, but many people were here for the backpack, waiting as early as 3:00 p.m., hoping to take home one of those free backpacks. city leaders say they were able to give away 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to the kids of east san jose, so the kids can start their school year off ready to learn. there's plenty of bags left. the city is able to provide free meals tonight for families who attend national night out. once you check in will you get one of those free meal tickets and a ticket for the giveaway. there's plenty of other things to do. like many communities i'm told that east san jose neighbors are right now struggling with safety issues and gang violence. so to help this community take back their community they will be offering a number of additional resources pertaining to safety, vigilance, reporting crimes and working with police. >> we want to make sure that families have resources. we will have over 30 different nonprofit organizations and departments present here providing different resources so that families know who to call
