has done so much for so many young people and i had the chance to meet some of the young people backstage incredible unbelievably impressive group. you know, being here with all of you, with all the outstanding members of the congressional black caucus reminds me of a story that one of our friends, a giant of the civil rights movement, reverend dr. joseph lowry told one day. dr. lowry, i don't think he minds me telling that he turns night in a couple of weeks. [applause] he's been causing a ruckus for about 89 of those years. a few years back, he and i were together in brown chapel, a.n.e. church in selma. [applause] we have some selma folks in the house. [applause] and dr. lowry stood up in the pulpit and told the congregation the story of chad rack and in the fiery first, you know the story. it's about three young men bold enough to stand up for god. even if it meant being thrown in a furnace. and they survived because of their fate. and because god showed up in that furnace with them. now, dr. lowery said that those three young men were a little bit crazy. but there's a difference, he

properly booed off the stage for saying all of this and in this chapter describes what happened to me backstage that night when we went home to michigan and the ensuing death threats. actually i could've handled it if it was just the death threats by the went from there into actual attempted assault on me, physical assault and then finally a young man who had decided to blow up our house. only because he had a large -- he has this whole cache of weapons and ammunition and bomb-making materials and one night he was kind of getting it all together, and his ak-47 went off in his apartment as ak-47s will do. a neighbor called the police. they came and they arrested him and they read his hit list and i was at the top of his hit list. the others were rosie o'donnell, janet reno, essentially a group of and me. [laughter] i don't know how he made that list, but i felt somewhat honored. [laughter] i just want to read you just a snippet of how this chapter began and i will move to the other things in the book. i would like to read a few excerpts of some of the stories in this book and then we will open i

[applause] all of these were tough fights. but they're making a difference all across the country. we have got more fights that we've got to win. we've got a long way to go to make sure everybody in this country gets a fair shake. that the vision that mobilized us in 2008 is realized. making sure every american has a chance to get ahead. that is where i need your help. we've got a lot of work to do. about one week ago, i sent to congress a bill called the american jobs act. some of the might have heard about this. -- some of you might have heard about this. as i said before a joint session of congress, everything in there has been supported by democrats and republicans in the past. everything will be paid for. it will put people back to work, it will put more money
