last week i made my second trip to bagdad in just over two months in order to meet with the new iraqiernment, and i was very encouraged to hear them reaffirm their commitment to govern in the interests of all iraqis and finally address the deep positions we're all aware of, including those over energy resources, regional autonomy and the composition of the security forces. all of these have plagued iraq out there its modern history. they are also committed to empowering local communities to mobilize and maintain security in their area, and work with the international community to defeat isil. indeed iraq has responded with a spirit of unity that the country has not experienced in decades, if ever. last month an iraqi arab pilot, major general [ inaudible ], flew an iraqi air force helicopter with a kurdish crew, and a zitti member of parliament, and with the single goal of rescuing azittis. tragically the helicopter crashed. the general was the only one killed. but before he died he told a reporter that the mission to rescue the azitis was the most important thing he had ever done in

jane is in bagdad. >> reporter: the iraqi military says its special forces have actually reached theity of tikrit, and attacking from three fronts. no one is expecting this battle to be quick or easy. tikrit is one of the strong holds of the islamic state group. it was the hometown of saadam husse hussein, and also where thousands of young men were slaughtered by islamic state fighters when they took over the city three months ago. in parliament today relatives of some of those men -- gained access to demand defense ministry officials and generals what had happened to their relatives, and why they couldn't get any information. they were told there could be a full investigation, that it was still unclear, but clearly something had gone wrong, and those responsible would be held accountable. human rights watch says looking at satellite imagery, shows more mass graves near tikrit, and says up to 800 men may have been killed, but defense ministries here say that number could be up to the thousands. in mosul, americans dropping leaflets, telling residents to stay away from islamic state f

we're joined live now from bagdad from jane.e, what are we hearing from the front line and these battles to retake these major cities? >> laura, iraqi military troops say their special forces that are in the lead have actually reached tikrit, some of them are about 100 meters way from the main government building. no one is expecting this to be a quick or easy battle, those. the iraqi security forces have twiced before to take back tikr tikrit. we're hearing reports that they are retreating in some places in tikrit and in the city of mosul as well, but still it is expected to be a very fierce battle and take some days at least. >> we have seen that, haven't we, with all of these missing soldiers from that area of tikrit. what are you hearing in parliament today about their cases? >> reporter: well, it was a rare appearance by officials from the ministry of defense, and iraqi army generals who painted a bit of a picture of what happened when somewhere between 800 and thousands, as the acting defense minister says, of iraqi soldie

there's still many, many problems in bagdad, and i think that's one of the reasons why, because iraq stands in this very difficult position with the threat of isil, both internal and externally they have problems. and that's why i think it was a somewhat non-controversial speech. how did you read the speech? >> as you said it is anything specific to instill, aside from isil and how they look over large territory within the state and declared their own state there. his emphasis on terrorism is of course understandable, considering the challenges that iraq faces. but he almost glossed over the issues of sectarian violence, of shiite militias, of the various problems iraq is facing, by simply saying we established a government of consensus and we're moving forward in good steps. we're continuing isil and working with the international community, but aside from that, you don't sense, first of all a sense of urgency in his conversation. you don't sense that the narrative leads to anything specific. it is just quite general, james. >> and no mention president obama every time he mentions t
