even alcohol sales suspended at 10:00 tonight. >> julia bagg, thanks for that. >>> all right. let's turn to the mass shooting in texas on saturday which left seven people dead and 22 others injured. authorities say the rampage began after the suspect was the subject of an afternoon traffic stop between midland and odessa. the gunman shot the trooper who initially stopped him. and continued west. opening fire at motorists and pedestrians as he drove by. the gunman at some point abandoned his vehicle. stole a u.s. postal service van and he was eventually killed in a shoot-out with police. three officers and a toddler are among the wounded. police say if gunman's motive is not clear. however, two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the case telling nbc news that the shooter had recently been fired from his job. they added this incident did not seem to be an act of either domestic or international terror. joining us now from odessa, texas, msnbc correspondent vaughn hillyard for us. talk about how the community is reacting after the tragic shooting. >> yeah, good morning.

julia bagg is joining us live from jackson beach, florida. thanks for joining us. parts of the city have been ordered to evacuate this morning. take us through that. >> that's exactly right, and where we are here in jacksonville beach, the evacuations are set to begin at 8:00. hotels to be closing. no one will be able to stay in the hotels tonight. now, already in the state of emergency the beach just a few dozen yards behind me is closed. in fact, the plans to close that beach originally that would have happened tonight but emergency managers deciding to waste no time closing that as of midnight this morning. no one allowed on the beach. they're also urging people to stay out of the intercoastal as well. schools are closed across the jacksonville area here in duval county. of course, they would have closed anyway for labor day but they're now closed through wednesday. also to the south of us the same thing in st. augustine. even alcohol sales are going to be suspended going into 10:00 tonight. also a curfew going into effect at 10:00 between the hours of 10:00 p.m

from nbc6 in miami, julia bagg in daytona beach, florida, julia, you've been tracking this storm several days now what are you seeing this morning? >> reporter: well, phillip, it's very quiet right now in daytona beach. we are under a curfew right now until 6:00 in the morning. and i'm talking with emergency managers who are telling me, you know, they don't know how long we'll be under a hurricane warning officially here in the county you heard janessa saying, dorian is sitting there stationary and moving so very slowly. they can't evetell residents at this point how far out we will be under this warning, and a warning because even without dorian making landfall here as it is not expected to, we could still see winds in excess of 74 miles per hour storm surge also a big concern, especially right here where i am along the hal i fax river. this is the tin ter coastal part of the reason why these low-lying areas have been evacuated in the coastal communities. and this morning a lot of people in shelters. there is still room for them more than 1100 people in shelters across the county this m

joining me now al roker and nbc's julia bagg in daytona beach. julia, first to you, the storm heading for the florida coastline. what are people doing right now? >> reporter: and let me just show you how the waves have been smashing into the coast here, just in a matter of a few moments. they can come up pretty quickly here. people are out here as you can see taking pictures. this beach technically closed but it's a sight that's hard to resist. and so really something to behold, even with dorian offshore just how much fury, how much force this storm has. we've been talking to people who live around here who know what it's like to experience something like this. top, thank you so much for joining us. you live here. what do you think when you see dorian, how close a call this has been? >> it had me on edge for a little bit. these things are so unpredictable. you can't tell. we have a history of storms coming right up to us and then turning at the last moment. that sometimes can add to complacency. i'm amazed the town prepped this time. >> reporter:

julia bagg is there. julia, no doubt it is windy, it is raining. tell us what it's like at this moment. >> i'm at daytona international sb speedway, but this morning it's about wind speed and rain that continues to lash daytona beach. in fact, all the bridges that lead to the mainland and the beachside communities, they've been closed since midnight this morning. in fact, right now engineers with the florida department of transportation are checking those bridges for safety. they are still allowing traffic to come from westbound -- head westbound across those bridges, but nobody can go across eastbound except for emergency vehicles. and, of course, you can imagine for safety reasons because of the high winds that we are seeing just kind of lashing things all around. now, also at this hour, and speaking with emergency managers, they're telling me just more than a thousand people taking refuge in shelters all across volusia county. and it's unclear just how long they'll have to be there, it's unclear when those bridges will be able to reopen if they

let's go to our team on the ground starting with julia bagg in daytona beach, florida.torm is slowly starting to move. what is it like where you are? >> reporter: let me show you the fury of these waves, stephanie, as dorian is not expected to make landfall here at daytona beach but, still, being so close to the coast, pushing of course these waves and then combining that with the tide. the concern remains for storm surge here. and i've been talking to someone who is from here who grew up here, terry, looking at these waves and tell me what you're thinking. >> turbulence. they keep rolling in but they seem to be held back. it's not high tide. we see the contrast between the darkness to the north and the sun to the south. we're just enjoying it. it is very breezy. i guess sort of the calm before the storm. >> reporter: we are in an evacuation zone right now. it appears your community may have ducked the brunt of this huge storm. >> we are super grateful and blessed. obviously we don't want to see anybody affected by a storm of such caliber as they've described earlier ov

in the studio, today show co host al rockyr, from daytona beach, florida, nbc correspondent julia bagg. wow. when you look at feet -- feet -- of water inside your home, what are we looking at right now, al? >> the storm surge is one of the things we're really concerned about now that dorian is on the move and making its way to the north. you can see we've got rain bands stretching from charleston down to savannah, jacksonville, and in fact, the eye of the storm is almost parallel with jacks jacksonvil jacksonville, florida. here's the latest from the national hurricane center. in fact, we have to worry about a tornado threat. there is a risk from severe weather from savannah to the beach. right now you can see tropical force winds in savannah. the latest from the weather service at 2:00 p.m. 180 miles south of charleston, however, it is run, just about parallel to jacksonville. 105-mile-per-hour winds. we have warnings from melbourne to cape hatteras. we have storm warnings into parts of north carolina and tropical storm watches into virginia. here's what we look for for the path now.
