right across portions of abacos and the grand bahama island. ite imagery coming in and showing you the before and after perspective of what the islands look like prior to the storm moving over land on september 2nd and the incredible amount of inundation across the northern fringes of the island where we've had some 22-foot storm surge reported across this region. absolutely submerging and damaging significant portion of grand bahama island. here's what is left of the storm system. still has some symmetry, some organization and we expect the storm to maintain its intensity or very close to it at least over the next 24 or so hours as it approaches land. and the turn toward the northeast we expect that to happen sometime around this time tomorrow night into the early morning hours of thursday. that's the area when we think the best bet here really for the storm system to begin pushing some of those hurricane force winds toward land. you notice at this hour the area indicated in yellow those are tropical storm force winds, even though it sits 8 0 o

this is the grand bahama island. you know, this will always be known as, you know, where dorian just stalled and just, you know, the wind and the rain relentless and it just slowly just sat there weakening over the top of the island for, you know, 24 to 36 hours. you notice there is a slow -- this is the last six hours. a slow drift to the north. we're hoping. to finally get it off of them. i mean, they could really use the storm to, you know, start to follow the forecast and start to move a little quicker. so right now it's a category 3. and we do think that it possibly will -- the new update will not have it a 4 anymore. because it's obviously not this strong anymore. so the new update will be a little weaker than this, which is great. i also think the new update when it comes in will be pretty similar to this red line. maybe a little closer here and over the outer banks. we'll wait and see what the hurricane center does. that will be at the end of this hour. as far as the impact of my graphics go, what i'm looking

islands. they have 7, 8 in the other. we are talking around 50,000 people in grand bahama. almost i think is 15,000/200,000 people in abaco and the other little islands around. so we are talking almost 70,000 people. so before everything, we already knew some hotel owners that they wanted to be part of the relief, and they offered us to be using their hotels' kitchens. but now we have no communication and we need to wait in the morning to check the aftermath as soon as they can communicate with us to see that those hotels are still able to help us start cooking, and if not we have plan "p" and we have plan "c." like always, we will go like we did in mexico beach. the destruction was so huge that we did use a kitchen in the middle of the field next to the national guard and we began cooking for everybody right there, right then. as you see sometimes, the best of plans is to adapt. and we are very good in adaptation. >> right. and, of course, this is the strongest storm to ever hit these islands. so for a lot of people they never would have seen the force of winds that they're

it is moving painfully slow and is kind of parked over the grand bahama island.f you notice i'll show you when we put this into motion. it has nudged a little bit to the north. we have to wait until it moves to the north, takes the turn where we can really make that prediction of what we can expect along the coast. let's look at the latest stats. 30 miles east-northeast of freeport, grand bahama island. winds apartmet 165 miles per ho. a powerhouse of wind and rain. it is a strong storm. it is not as strong as it was. we are seeing a teenie bit of weakening which is good news. it will take a while before we see major weakening but at least some friction over land, a little more wind shear. we're not seeing the strengthening we saw with every advisory yesterday. there is the movement at 1 mile per hour. a very, very slow walk. that is allowing all of this rain to fall over the grand bahama island and it is just awful for the island. water does a ton of damage. this is going to be a lot of money, lives on the line here, and we'll be talking about this for several d

let me show you the before and after of grand bahama island. is is a picture of freeport right there. with the radar imagery, how much rain we got along that storm sat over the island. this is the inundation map. and this shows how much we expect the i'd to be under water. so tens of thousands of homes, of course, completely destroyed. the devastation is just going to be horrible, brooke. we start to see pictures come out of there, i think we start to see more and more over the coming days. it's heartbreaking. never seen. it's unprecedented how long the storm sat over the island and how powerful it was when it did that. we'll be talking about this storm for decades. >> we will. you and i were talking yesterday, 1-mile-per-hour just churning and dumping the rain. we'll see the pictures and i'm sure more destruction and focus on the carolinas in the coming days. jennifer, thank you very much. let's turn our attention back to florida. that's where my colleague victor blackwell is live on jensen beach, florida. we know mother nature has been fickle.

seen, especially for the northwest bahamas islands, so we'll certainly bring you the very latest there. now, as for the storm, you mentioned we had a landfall. the first official u.s. landfall, and that happened around 8:35 this morning off of cape hatteras. it is moving north and eastward, and it's really going to start to accelerate. you can see with the radar within the last couple of hours, there's our landfall, and it's starting to boot out to sea, which is great. but we're still going to see the effects along the coast, 60 miles per hour winds in elizabeth city. here are the peak wind gusts, we saw over 90 miles per hour, cape lookout, north carolina. atlantic beach, even charleston harbor, 75 miles per hour. and, by the way, we had over two dozen reports of tornadoes yesterday as well, so we'll for that. my apologies for not being right on my mark right away. stuart: i'm shocked, janice -- >> reporter: it's the first time in i don't know how long. stuart: that is true. it is loaded with desperately needed supplies and headed for grand bahama island. >>reporter: supplies can't be loaded fast enough. bahamaians at the capital's ferry terminal are anxious to send essentials to family and friends in freeport. >>they don't have no foodstuff, nowhere to buy it because the food stores overflowed. >>reporter: this ferry will make its first trip to grand bahama island since hurricane dorian devastated it over the weekend. this shows you the scale of the effort to get to the hardest hit areas. behind me, folks lined up to buy a ticket to get on the ferry to freeport. these supplies will sit along 16,000 pounds of goods sent by american airlines for said staffers. operations agent darcel radon says her family is stranded. >>it's so terrifying. it's really hard, you know. >>reporter: we will be aboard this vessel and be a part of its nine-hour, overnight journey to freeport. but there has been a further delay. the captain's assistant tells us they're still cleaning up the main port there on grand bahama island, so it can receive this aid. no

gusts of 190 right on grand bahama island right there. it's trying to move off shore. that southern part of the eye. but still right around the eye, the eyewall still getting the hardest winds, the strongest winds right around freeport and all along grand bahama island. this is a six-hour loop. look, it doesn't even look like it moves at all. you can see the outer bands already starting to make it on shore across florida. so that will continue throughout the day today and tomorrow. when you get those bands, we'll also have the winds pick up a little bit. they may back off a little bit once it's passed. that's completely normal, as well. this is expected to make that turn to the north and pick up forward speed eventually by the time we get into tomorrow. so that's going to be when a lot of these questions will be answered of how close this is going to get to the state. you can see it's closest -- its closest brush across the central portion of the east coast of florida has still a major hurricane, 125 mile-per-hour winds, and then it's going to -- supposed to make a tur

it is just battering freeport and grand bahama island. but look here. you can see heavier rain bands now, hobey sound, fort pierce, west palm beach, all the way down to fort lauderdale. so here are the latest coordinates from the national hurricane center in miami at 2:00 p.m. it is still a dangerous category 4 storm, 105 miles east of west palm beach. you can see those bands still coming in. the winds have dropped about 5 miles per hour now. 150 miles per hour west-northwest at 1. what is interesting is because we're starting to see this thing widen out. tropical force winds now extend out 140 miles from the center. we have hurricane warnings out right now just north of west palm beach to north of melbourne. we have hurricane watches up to the florida/georgia border. we've even got tropical storm watches for inland parts of florida. now, this is a very -- very weak steering systems with this. so what is going to steer this? what we've got, this ridge of high pressure that was right, stretched all the way across from the mid plains all the way out into

in the bahamas it's been challenging. the abaco island, in the northeast, it reached the bahamas on monday. first, helicopters got in there. we have rescued probably 50 folks to date. we are just starting to get a sight picture on grand bahama island and freeport, the center of gravity population wise in the northern bahamas. today we will start to have a fuller picture. that's the region where it dorian sat for almost 36 or 48 hours and pounded the region. we suspect the impacts to be severe, sir. we are rendering life-saving support, humanitarian assistance. we are working with the office of foreign disasters and that the lead agency here, on providing urgent support, cbp, air marine counterparts are there with helicopters. we will see where this goes in the next 24 hours and we might get additional support from dod, that maybe warranted, sir. >> president trump: will you use some of the spice in florida, and even puerto rico, two areas that will definitely get hit? if you look from north carolina, south carolina, georgia? >> the office

it made a second landfall and then stalled over grand bahama island, continue 185-mile-an-hour winds coast guard they're helping to transport people to hospitals who need rescuing. gusts over 200 miles an hour in the bahamas. that is comparable to an ef for tornado. think about the fact that usually passes in minutes. these conditions are lingering over the bahamas for hours on end. the winds have now slowed to about 130 miles an hour but it is still a category four storm. here on the florida coast, every precaution is being taken in case the storm comes closer to land. black hawk helicopters are staging in miami. they can fly further up the coast when conditions allow it but high water vehicles are in place all along the coastline and the florida national guard has more than 4500 chilled to soldiers and airmen ready with boats and generators for search and rescue support, especially to the barrier islands. for local officials in jupiter and west palm beach, the priority has been getting vulnerable folks to safety. west palm beach used city buses to bring disabled people to shelters.

. >> reporter: dave and christine, we are in the small town of high rock on grand bahama island or whathould say was the town of high rock. look at the devastation here. this was the local town hospital. the clinic. and it's gone. beaten down to the ground which hurricane dorian's category 5 winds. we are only about an hour from freeport, but it is another world. destruction here is just a different level. there are people that say that the abacos received the worst of the damage, but if you just venture a little bit further, places that people have not gone on grand bahama island, you see damage that's every bit as bad and perhaps even worse. this whole town is gone. there are about 300 people who live there and every house, every car, every structure has some damage and many, if not most, are totally destroyed. this was a police station. hurricane dorian knocked down concrete wall, took off the roof and next door, the one cell jail for this town is wide open. if anybody was inside, they're not there anymore. the question now is, will towns like this recover and rebuild or simply cease

coast guard helicopters and have conducted flights over the island of grand bahama island. s encouraging because up until now there's been no assistance from the outside world to this isolated island. there's so much need here right now. people are running short on water, on food. we need more generators brought in because there's still no power on the entire island. so we drove out to the airport today. we were able to get there. we tried the day before and it was impossible. but many of the roads have begun getting cleared up. what we found at the airport was a scene of total devastation. one of the terminals was completely ripped open. there was part of an airplane wing inside the terminal with wheels still attached. we saw others thrown around like toys. it was hard to imagine what could have caused this incredible destruction. the storm surge from dorian did cover the airport, it did submerge the airport for water for two days. the other terminals while still standing were also badly damaged. one of the terminals we were told was too badly damaged to enter. no one had a

. >> let's talk about grand bahama island. people who stayed there are posting video on social media showing the storm surge almost at the roof of some buildings with violent winds. help is on the way, however. chef row day andre and his relief organization world central kitchen is on the ground in the bahamas preparing to cook and serve meals for people affected by the storm. chef jose andres joins us from the bahamas. jose, where are you now? >> i am right now in nassau. i'm in one of the kitchens that we've been able to use from one of the big hotels in the island. and here you see a lot of volunteers already helping us. many of them are people that were here on vacation and they decided, you know, to come and to start helping us get ready because as soon as we can we hope by tomorrow to be in amoco and grand bahamas to start feeding people there as soon as we can. >> that's where it really got hit, the storm was sitting on top of abaco with winds up to 180 miles an hour, sitting on top of grand bahama, still riding about 1

still over the grand bahama island, still playinggued with category 3 for 30 hours. that's still the biggest headn are that you shake your head and we're almost 40 hours since land fall and it hasn't moved much. but it is falling apart. doesn't look as good on radar. 185 mile-per-hour winds. now 120. stale dangerous storm at 120. but the wacker eaker, the lower storm surge. that's the way the math work withes. hurricane center has the thext apositi position 125. sethey're going toi lower the redicted winds along the path. still about wi100 miles away fr the coast. but the wind gusts e extend up with 150 miles. and the closest approach late tonight. they were still saying autha.m. is 130. they're going to lower those forecast winds. because right now it's 120 and it's interesting. because if you look at matthew, it was about 100ten. but it was closer than this red line here. so people are going to compare a lot to matthew, this may be further off and maybe weaker. what happens now also has efects to the intensity of the south carolina coast. two and a half days to wat

that's just south of freeport, just south of grand bahama island.iles south. morgan not seeing much impact it seems right now from the hurricane as we are seeing the eye of the storm over grand bahama island. talk to us about why that is. >> well, right now he is just south here. this radar is currently the cloud coverage here. so yesterday when we were watching really closely, i want to show you on this radar. we move that over here. it's completely out of the area. so they're seeing a glimpse of sunshine, high pressure steering this system and the outer bands really not affecting that area. where we have a big-time issue here is freeport into the grand bahamas here where it is completely sitting. the issue is this will not move for 36 hours. can you imagine that? this is going to be a ton of water here and talking about the left side quadrant really going to be shifting more to the west here and that's why the storm surge potential is very high. >> all right. thank you. before you go i want to talk through what we're seeing from the president onli

coast guard helicopters and airplanes have begun flights over the island of grand bahama. s inkretd continue bring problems. people are short on water, food, we need more generators brought in because there's no power on the entire island. we drove out to the airport today. we were able to get there. we tried the day before and it was impossible but many of the roads have begun getting cleared up. but what we found at the airport was a scene of total devastation. one of the terminals was completely ripped open. there was part of an airplane wing inside the terminal with the wheels still attached. we saw other planes strewn around like toys outside the airport. it was hard to imagine what could have caused the destruction. the storm surge did cover the airport and submerge the airport and the other terminals while still standing were also badly damaged by this flooding. one of the terminals was too dangerous to get into. there was so much debris that it was impossible to imagine a plane landing and taking off, and that is really a challenge for this island because on an isol

devastating hurricane conditions continue on grand bahama island. this deadly storm had been essentially parked over the northern bahamas for nearly t days. imagine that. take a look at this picture. this is the runway at the grand bahama islands international airport. you can see it looks like an ocean. cbs this morning lead national correspondent david begnaud is here in cocoa beach. david? >> reporter: good morning. coa beh is under a mandatory evacuation order. i went for a run last night as crazy as it sounds and about 11:00 you could see it was a ghost town. nobody was out. businesses and homes for as far as the eye could see boarded up with plywood and many people had sand bags in front of it. the real concern here is the water coming in as storm surge, defined as sea water being pushed by the wind inland and causing flooding. let's talk about the grand bahamas. the context of this is important. there are 700 islands in the bahamas. 30 of them are inhabitable. we are talking about two that have been ravaged by this hurricane so far the prime m

that storm pounded grand bahama island earlier in the week as it effectively just stalled right over that island for a couple of days. first up in our coverage, let's go to msnbc meteorologist bill karins. he is tracking dorian's every move. where is this storm right now, bill? >> it's about to move very close, if not over the top of the cape lookout. it will be interesting to see if we get an official landfall or not. but the northern eye, the bright red is now moving onshore. this is the first time that the core of the hurricane has been over land since it left grand bahama island. it also by the way this is the ninth day in a row we've been tracking hurricane dorian. only 10% of all hurricanes usually last that long. if you have hurricane fatigue, there is a good reason for it. we also have this tornado watch that continues until 7:00 a.m. numerous bands, and this could even be continued. we have 14 tornadoes in the last 24 hours, and a couple of them were pretty big ones. let's go a little closer zoomed in map here, and here is morehead city. once you go out the barrier island, t

but it does not include anybody from this island, the island of grand bahama and we have heard reports, multiple reports of missing and dead. so that death toll once authorities are finally able to reach this island is just going to rise. in the meantime, wolf, you have to think about those people spending their third night in houses that are under water. >> is there the worst you've ever seen, patrick? i know you have covered these hurricanes for many years? >> reporter: i've covered katrina. i covered wilma. i have covered irma. you see some terrible devastation and nothing like this. it gets worse every day. it doesn't get better. usually after hurricanes things start to get better. here things are continuing to get worse. our only hope is now the skies have cleared enough it will be safe for the bahamian or u.s. government to be landing planes and choppers here that can help with the rescue efforts, the bahamians at grand bahama need that help desperately. >> patrick, we will have more from you coming up. thank you so much for your really excellent reporting. it's difficult for eve

they're out there and they'll be getting into the grand bahama island today.n addition to that we've had some ships come through, some bad weather here. three ships off the bahamas right now, they're going to be able to provide support and fly out there longer and get their boats in and maybe get a look at the land and get a better situational awareness of what's going on in grand bahama island and abacos. >> i should note i think you're up in virginia beach which itself is preparing from some impact of some kind. so this is difficult on many levels for you. our patrick oppmann is saying the sun is shining there. he's hoping to get some contact from the bahamian government rescue efforts today as well as the u.s. coast guard. any sense when you'll be able to land planes on those islands? >> we're assessing the airports. i flew over a number of airports in abacos. unfortunately it looks like the airports are under water and some you were able to land a aircraft there but the roads were inaccessible. we have been able to land our helicopters on some of the land

they need to come to the remote places on grand bahama island that very few have visited. we're only an hour to get here. driving around debris, you can see never direction for miles. all the power lines are down. most of the trees are town. you don't see any cars going back and forth because there's nothing or nowhere to go to here. look at this. this is amazing. this was the police station. hurricane dorian came here and ripped the roof clean off. not only that, you think of the power that a storm needs to knock down entire cement walls. we don't know if anyone was here. residents say the storm surge and you can see the line just up there. 17 feet. they measured it. you can see the devastation everywhere you look. the town goes back to the water. there are some 300 homes here. every home is either damaged or destroyed. you can see slabs of concrete and they've been thrown around like they weigh nothing. this is the high rock prison. there's only one jail cell and it is not guarding anyone. we don't know if they were here but they didn't stick around. there is nothing lef

to florida, what they will experience will be nothing compared to what the people on the islands of the bahamas have experienced for the last 12 to 24 hours. and i want to go now to keith tom -- kevin tomlinson, on the island of grand bahama in freeport. kevin, first, thank you for talking with us. i know communications are touch and go. tell us where you are and what you saw overnight. >> well, we're right in the middle of everything. we're being pounded with strong winds and lots of water. i just -- i'm actually at a shelter, and we had to leave a few minutes ago to assist some people in getting here. and i'm really -- really and truly being out in that experience is something i've never experienced before. like you said, the winds are moving at about a one mile per hour. it's unbelievable for us. in 2004 when we had hurricane frances i think she sat over for about two days. we know what that feels like. and this is a totally different category altogether. and one thing i dread is the aftermath of this entire thing. but like i said before, we have builders here in the bahamas. we know how to

as we get reports in tonight that the winds are still affecting northern grand bahama island and a sortains continuing throughout grand bahama. so what does this mean for the work they are trying to do, helping people? this means we are still in a bit of a waiting mood until we can get some clear access into the affected areas. so we've had in the last couple of hours, the first aerial assessments, right before sunset, at grand abaco island, but we still aren't able to get any kind of aerial or visual assessments from the grand bahama island. so it means we are still counting on our red cross volunteers who are in the sites that we had volunteers on the ground before the storm hit. they are community volunteers from the area. and we've prepositioned some emergency teams throughout the bahamas before the storm hit. we are relying on them to do what they've been trained and equipped to do, and will know by tomorrow around sunset and throughout — excuse me tomorrow at dawn and daybreak, our teams will start to mobilise more and we will get more information and get into action. we'll get in

tourists on the islands of the bahamas took the advice of island officials and got off the island. i want to bring in the director of bahamas ministry. how have things changed in the last 24 hours? we were concerned at the time of about a dozen or less than a dozen folks that you wanted to make sure were able to get out. >> good morning afternoon. in the space of 24 hours we've seen hurricane dorian go from a category 4 hurricane to very powerful category 5 hurricane. so right now our deepest concerns were for the well-being for residents and the visitors. luckily reports are there have been no loss of life. as you reported, the damage to property and infrastructure is monumental. that's where we're going to have to pick up the pieces once dorian passes us. >> as we have seen this particular storm change in the last 24 hours, have you been able to get the resources you need? >> again, as we've already mentioned the storm is hitting our northwestern islands. of course as it intensified airports have closed and the ports had already closed. it was very difficult to get resources to th
