it may not even survive this but if it does, and gets to the bahamas, by the weekend, now we have very little wind shear. the conditions become more favorable for strengthening and then if that happens, that becomes a threat to the united states. more on this storm and also our forecast coming up with the seven-day in a few minutes. >>> now to two major court rulings affecting new jersey today. the first is a setback to the state's struggling gambling industry. new jersey has struck out again in its efforts to offer legal sports betting. a federal appeals court panel today denied the garden state's latest appeals. new jersey has been trying since 2009 to offer sports betting at its casinos and racetracks. today's ruling leaves the door open for the new jersey to file another appeal. and the state has indicated that will happen shortly. >>> meantime, a judge today approved an environmental contamination settlement twep between new jersey and exxonmobil. under the deal, exxon will pay $225 million for damage at 18 industrial sites and more than 800 gas stations across the garden state. e

or moves into the bahamas and heads towards the florida coast. the storm now is continuing to move west. still heavy rain bands across parts of the islands. it's moving westward. next, the virgin islands and puerto rico, yes, you mentioned that. and also, parts of the dominican republic. now, a lot of people have been asking about haiti. the government of haiti has not issued a warning yet. although, it's pretty close and right on the same island with the dominican republic. so we're going to say, if you're traveling to haiti or have loved ones there, they need to be on the lookout, too. the storm is expected to bring very heavy rain across these islands. all the way into the turks and caicos and eventually the bahamas. right now, top winds at 45 miles an hour. by saturday afternoon, it will be moving through the turks and caicos in the bahamas and then heads toward south florida. at this time, the current track brings it right along the coast, north of west palm beach. we'll have more on the storm as we continue to track it and the changes comin

it takes it on sunday, the cone of uncertainty includes the bahamas, portions of cuba, not quite florida. as far as the west coast, some monsoonal flow continues, showers and clouds in the forecast from phoenix to tucson. pretty dry many other areas, there's been a few sprinkles and showers up in northern idaho this morning. but not a lot. in what is promising is that over the next seven days, there's at least some hope for some rainfall in the northwest. we are looking at the orange and yellowish colors up here, the potential for two to three inches of rain. that would be about five to seven days when the new storm system coming into the west. that's what we need. we need rainfall for the areas that have been hit hard by the drought and lately by the fire. so today's forecast, very hot in the interior west. dangerous fire weather continues from utah up to fresno 101, a little toasty. >>> that's saying something, a promise of maybe in five to seven days, some rain in the northwest. we could use it. >> yes, we dentally could, bill thank you very much. >>> researchers are closer than ever

can't say the same about, well, puerto rico and the bahamas. they'll be dealing with erika.ka has 50 mile-an-hour winds. it just increased again, back up to 50 miles an hour with movement to the west/northwest. that's at 17 miles an hour. that takes erika right past the dominican republic. that's by this time tomorrow morning. and then 24 hours later, early sunday morning, it will be impacting the bahamas passing just to the north of cuba. and then it looks like it's heading for south florida. the latest update, just updated information, keeps it as a tropical storm, not becoming a hurricane. once it reaches land in south florida, then it will weaken even more as it moves into interior florida. 60ç mile-an-hour winds early monday morning. by early tuesday morning it's down to 50 miles an hour. even though it's not going to be a hurricane, it still brings tremendous rainfall to those areas that it will hit. for us, sunshine, low humidity, back into the lower 80s today. tomorrow, a bit warmer. humidity stays low. 88 fwrez in the afternoon. then here comes the heat that jessic

towards eventually north of cuba and towards the bahamas. where it goes from there, this trend shows it further west. that would affect more western florida. some of the miles suggesting it could skirt the eastern seaboard of florida. that's what the national hurricane center is going with. we have tropical storm warnings for the turks and caicos and southeast bahamas. not a player into jamaica or cuba tas treks towards the north and east. at 50 miles per hour, the sustained winds. approaching miami sometime, it appears, early on monday. then making that turn into florida. now they've updated this track and it looks like it stays a tropical storm. as long as it stays over land and not water, it probably won't intensify any. still heavy rain and strong winds. they need the rain down there, but i don't know if they need it like that. for us, clear skies tonight, clear skies tomorrow, clear skies into sunday as well. a high temperature of 83 in the city. north and west, nice and comfortable too. upper 70s, lower 80s. shore points, same scenario

that's because of atmospheric conditions unfavorable until it gets to the bahamas. now the track has shifted a little more east so now it's favoring much for eastern coast of florida and we could even see it slide up the atlantic at this point. that would be by monday night. it could become a category one hurricane so we expect some strengthening by that time. the computer models are agree, too. they're starting to curve to the north more than they did earlier today so we see that agreement that allows for more accurate forecasts and we'll have more updates as we go through the rest of the week. still too far out to see what happens as it continues to track north. for tonight, temperatures will be in the mid-50s north and west. mid-60s through the philadelphia area. tomorrow, is sunny, low humidity, low temperatures in -- temperatures in the low 80s. friday looking a lot like tomorrow, saturday looks good but warmer, humidity for sunday, storms come back by the beginning of next week. stay tuned, we'll be right back. the road to hell is paved with good intentions. m

it was originally attached to the people and bahamas and it was a derogatory term. for the poor people who could not get anything else to eat, they could catch conch. it is like a big snail that lives in the ocean and it cannot swim away from you. it was a derogatory term and people took it and made it a badge of honor. now everybody wants to call themselves conchs. we are also called the contra republicter -- conch after our road -- after our run-in with immigration. we had to prove we were citizens to go anywhere on the mainland. in rebellion, we created the conch republic. wilson, who was a great 1970's, hein the came up with his own version. -- can see the large muscle conch in the house and the caption is, "look, it is a conch house." looking at the history and the island, some great history over the years from 1820 to the present. -based now a tourist economy. we still have the military and we still have a varied population.
