i'm at that plaza in downtown half moon bay, right across from half moon bay city hall. this is right in the heart of downtown half moon bay on main street. the city has opened up this plaza for people to come and mourn. we've seen people coming by leaving flowers and notes and candles just to share and give their condolences to the eight people shot, seven people killed in half moon bay. over about a mile away at a church, a service just wrapped up. it started at 6:00. these are live pictures. it was an interfaith prayer service. the public was invited to come to pay their respects to those who died and pray for healing and for peace for everyone impacted by this horrific tragedy. the city says it will also be holding a vigil in the coming days, but we do not know a date, time, or place yet. as for the investigation, the sheriff's office saying today seven people lost their lives due to workplace violence. that is the motive right now. they said it's not a hate crime. this was not an act of domestic terrorism but workplace violence. the suspect, 66-year-old chunli zhao

you're watching "today in the bay." the first sierra snow survey confirming what centers have been saying all along about the recent snowfall. the snowpack right now 177% of normal for this time of year. here is a look at yesterday's measurements near highway 50. the snowpack there measured about 55 inches adding up to the best start in 40 years. it will still take months of above average rainfall and snowfall for california to emerge from the drought. >> that's okay. we'll take what we can get. >>> bay area reservoirs sitting at higher levels than they have in a long time. uvas reservoir more than 100%. last year there were times it was less than halfful. >> it's important to see the reservoirs across the state fill up from the rainstorms and the snowpack is very important for us because all of that run-off in the spring will fill up the reservoirs as well. >> it is highly likely some will be spilling over during the height of this week's rainfall and we know that it is already here. it may not be in your neighborhood

the north bay. it's more hodgepodge. 41 for nevado. 46 going on for napa with 37 santa rosa. 37 39 livermore with 39 going on for san jose. that's why the contrast that we see here is much lower as we can see in the far east bay contrast with the north bay. but still everybody's trailing again. now our temperatures are going to pop so much going on this afternoon with all of this. but that gives you general idea because of that factor into this whole week long looks to be fairly dry. they'll be these weak systems that pass in the aftermath. and we're looking for another one happening again say wednesday night into thursday. bit might see some drier air return to be reinforcement with that current winds. we've seen a shift a little bit to the east that has brought in a little bit of that marine layer off towards the central valley. we usually get a coming in from the coast. the breakdown for you today will to about 37 at 08:00am by 11. we're talking 53 secure locations by popping about 60 or so it's

bay." i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia. coming up, we will continue the storm coverage. we are on early this morning bringing the latest on the storm. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. how long before the storm moves out? >> it is coming in waves. it is becoming more scattered. we will see more breaks as we go into today. we are still dealing with this storm after the brunt moved through yesterday evening. now watching out for the potential of thunderstorms. as we get a closer look, we see the showers are light across san jose. other areas are getting a chance with the heavy rain soak into the ground. we are seeing some lightning strikes off to the east of us as it is moving to the sacramento valley. before the bay area, it is once again lighter compared to what we had yesterday. zooming in to the south bay as well as over to palo alto, there are pockets still of heavy rain that is moving through. we are still under that flood watch that will continue for today as we are looking

a quarter to half inch through the north bay and east bay. but we're going to be hard-pressed to get to those numbers. nonetheless, watch out for some rainfall here throughout the bay area tonight. snow in the sierra tonight, early tomorrow. another 6 to 12 inches. it's stacking up so high that it's up to the windows in some cases. be careful if you're traveling there even through tomorrow. our daytime highs will stay cool here. temperatures in the 50s, and again, we're starting that drying that's going to allow drying for several days as this area of high pressure is moving that storm track off to the north. check it out on the seven-day forecast. dry weather through the next seven days, and we are cold. freezing temperatures here saturday morning. down below the freezing mark. so we can get through this after what we've been through. no doubt. >> we've been through a lot. really quick. tonight nothing major, right. compared to what we've seen in the past three weeks. >> that's right. this storm system is really weak when you compare to what

now let's go to the uth bay. the situation there in the south bay had been about 16,000 customers without power. most of it minor. you see those small circles of green. that's what that indicates that 16,000 number has been dropped now to about 12,000. so they're slowly making progress as neighborhood by neighborhood. they're getting these power lines repaired. let's jump to the east the inland east bay near the 60 corridor, walnut creek alamo, all the way down towards san ramon in livermore. that's fine. we're not looking at too much power ou concentration for the east bay really is along the shoreline, the upper portions of the shoreline from oakland all the way up towards richmond. that's where we're seeing customers without power in the highest numbers there. we went from 12,000 total customers down to about 7800 and then in the north bay. the situation is also improving, but not by much in the entire north bay. we had 23,000 customers without power. at the start of the broadcast, they've actually been able t

entire bay area. in the south bay here is video of roofers trying to fix any of those leaks before this rain arrives. you know it looks like it will probably happen closer to the evening some of that heavier rainfall. still they're trying to work on those roofs over there. also pg&e, those power line issues with the gusty winds we saw in the south bay and really across the entire bay area. let's go over to sunol. as mike mentioned there are some delays when it comes to the ace train this morning, so service will resume today. but there was that landslide that hit that train yesterday. it impacted more than 200 passengers who were stranded for hours. >> well, we were going through niles canyon, it was reduced speed and hit a bump. the train jittered, they came to a stop and said we hit a tree. there was a bunch of dirt and so forth that came down along with it. >> reporter: in san francisco they have been dealing with this flooding issue for quite some time when it comes to the cleanup, complaints of s

bay bridge. now a live look at the golden gate bridge. not a lot of cars on the roadway, but you can see the slick roads, so be extra patient. a live look at the san mateo bridge where you can see the brake lights westbound with more cars on the roadways, be extra careful, i was driving on the bridge yesterday when the rain was coming down and it was pretty scary. just be patient. one more look at the richmond and san rafael bridge near the toll plaza, not a lot of cars. now in san francisco some business owners are waiting for a break from the rain to make up for lost money, that includes a small bookstore in the mission. the progress they have made no is drying out. >> here in the mission, recovering from the new year's eve storm, the basement was flooded so all throughout the ground floor, this inventory is under display tables and in the corners. the storm and broken drainage pipe turned the basement of this street comic shop into a small lake. estimating that the flooding caused thousands of

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is tracking conditions in the north bay, one of the places getting hit the hardest. and we want to hear from meteorologist kari hall, who has been tracking this weather. >> we've been seeing the rain widespread and steady for much of the bay area. we've seen at times pockets of heavier rain picking up and moving into parts of the north bay from marin county right across the richmond-san rafael bridge. for the east bay, it is widespread with a few areas where you see the darker green, the heavier rain that's moving through. and we're definitely seeing that now over the santa cruz mountains, reaching more saratoga and eventually making it toward san jose, with lighter showers for morgan hill to gilroy. so we are still looking at waves of rain coming in, all of this moisture pushing across the bay area, and at times it does pick up quite a bit as it taps into that deep tropical moisture. another atmospheric river moving in with bay area rain and sierra snow that's really reducing the visibility in those areas. all of this drawn in by the center of this storm, t

look at the north bay.re isn't much of a break, even into the overnight hours as there could be more waves of rain coming through then we get ready for the next storm. you saw how short that break was for the north bay. really not getting much of one then we see heavy rain from santa rosa northward toward clear lake. this is tomorrow evening. we'll also start to see the rain moving into san francisco, but it's mostly the north bay where we see this continuous flow of moisture coming in as the next storm system approaches. by 6:00 saturday evening, the much of the rest of the bay area seeing at least out of and on rain, but not much of a break up in that activity for the north bay. even into sunday. so we're talking about the potential of more flooding roads, more rising creeks, and we always warn you to turn around, don't turn, because some of this water, even a small amount, can sweep you away, your vehicle. most of the time you don't even know how deep it is an all of this water, some of it is being absor

this time in half moon bay. we continue to pray for the families and neighbors impacted by tragedy in california and our country. and we're grateful to all of our first responders, san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins shared her thoughts saying that she was horrified to learn of another mass shooting, leaving 7 victims dead this afternoon in half moon bay community just south of san francisco. there has been more than one mass shooting per day in 2023, according to jenkins saying this level of gun violence is unacceptable and we must demand action assembly member mia bonta of the east bay said shortly after standing in solidarity with the aap, i like legislature caucus over in southern california at a vigil for the monterey park victims. that's when she got news of another shooting here in half moon bay. tragedy upon tragedy and the governor's office has shared some information saying that the victims of all these shootings can actually turn to the california victim's compensation board. and they have

plo alto and making its way across the bay moving into the east bay.der a high wind warning until 10:00 where winds could gust 40 to 60 miles an hour in the hills and mountains as well as more heavy rain that's really hitting us for the morning commute as our mountains may get another 3 to 6 inches of rainfall. we have the concern of mud slides as well as more power outages. and also isolated thunderstorms in the forecast that could produce some damaging wind. we start to see the heaviest rain shifting south late morning into the afternoon and the system stalling out will add more flooding impact. our creeks and rivers will be rising fast and we're going to see it letting up just a limb bit for parts of the north bay but still running very heavily in san jose as well as the tri-valley into early in the afternoon and then going into the evening a couple of pop-up showers and thunderstorms. there is a little bit of a break tonight as more rain is set to move in early tomorrow morning. a lot of that will be quite heavy at times but a little bit more scatt

a live look now at the bay bridge. you can see it looks pretty good but as the rain picks up it will get more intense. one of the major concerns on the roads as the storm moves in is the danger of standing water. now this is video from this weekend's storms. you can see drivers became trapped under flooded underpasses, and this is what it looked like as a san francisco woman made her way to the north bay on saturday. chp says when you encounter standing water, be sure to proceed with caution. the water becomes a barrier between your tires and the roadway and can cause you to skid or run off the road. here is what the agency says you can do to avoid that. >> the natural inclination is to hit the brakes and swerve. the best thing, the only way to get out that have is to remain calm, maintain the vehicle driving in a straight line. take your foot off the accelerator so the tires slow down enough they're able to get back in touch with the roadway and regain traction. you'll be able to drive straight through that. >> keep i

for parts of the bay area, especially the south bay, but the north bay will be the target for the heaviest rainfall especially as we go into the afternoon where it really picks up in intensity for sonoma county and then some pockets of heavy rain moving through, but it's basically off and on for us at least into this evening and it lifts into the north bay where it does rain longer. so we're watching all of this and the impacts coming on an already saturated ground. mike, the roads are already slick. >>> and so is our lens. i would assume, we don't drive on the lens. horizontal there are slick roadways out of richmond and over to san rafael. the volume building up across this bridge, but overnight chp talked about the wind as well being an issue crossing some of those travels. looking over here more rain and more cars at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights were turned on about 5:45. much more backup than we've seen in past weeks so, again, more volume on the roadways. more slowing across the span. a little build for richmond. westbound 80 not so bad considering how slick the roadway

let's jump to the east bay. that's probably the least hardest hit area, especially along 6.80, corridor. wannacry pleasant hill out towards the delta. but if you take a look here at the upper east shore freeway from the bay bridge north towards richmond, you're looking at outages that are fairly widespread, although minor in nature, but still fairly widespread. in fact, the east bay in total has about 12,000 customers without power right now. and then our final stop for you is going to the north bay. and again, it was the north bay hills that got hit pretty hard, especially with those winds and all those trees that came down caused havoc for power lines. so here you can see the coloring, the darker, the color, the more customers without power. orange indicates 5,000 plus customers without power in that area. in fact, in total, the entire north bay has about 23 custom 20,000 customers without power. right now, when will restorations begin when we'll start to see the lights come back on at this point. that's a big
