[applause] >> i'd like to ask both of my guests to begin by giving us a kind of overview of the subject matter of their books. which is to say, the aids crisis or the chernobyl catastrophe. just kind of what happened and when and to remind us and educate some of us about what the specific events that your book addresses work. david, perhaps you wouldn't mind starting. >> thank you everybody. great to be here how to survive a plague is the story of the plagued years of the hiv epidemic. the years before any medication made any dent in the disease. when an infection with hiv was almost certain death sentence. those years were from 1981-1996. i chronicle the story of the rise of the plague and the rise of activism around the plague. in 1981, it's hard to remember, but the gay community which was the initial and epicenter of the plaguein united states was nearly totally disenfranchised. we

three others — two boys of 17 and an 18—year—old — have appeared at the old bailey charged with the murderof the most vulnerable teenagers has revealed how some are exposed to drugs, weapons and organised crime — even being sexually abused by those who are meant to be looking after them. these children are either in care or have recently left, but are still supposed to be supervised in what is known as semi—independent living. our special correspondent ed thomas reports. just a house where people profit from young, vulnerable children. i've never really had any support. all i had was basically a bed. there were those involved, whoever did what they did. someone needs to pay a price for the pain. last night, we revealed serious concerns over the safeguarding of teenagers in unregulated homes. tonight, we hear the stories of vulnerable children exposed to weapons, drugs and organised crime. a lot of drug dealing, people bringing in acid. this teenager lived in a home run by a company called centurion care. knives, samurai swords, everything. i don't know how they get it past all the cameras.

i walked out of the old bailey and it was surreal. i knew that i could now live a life. you served nine years injail for killing your husband. did you deserve to? i don't think i deserved to spend as long as i did in prison. i think if i'd been charged with manslaughter it would have been a lesser sentence. i walked free from court having served the full time. what were the risks in terms of you coming out? what kind of help were you looking for? i think, had i not had a strong family surrounding me, if i had been somebody who was just released out into the open world, i don't think that i would have been able to cope very well. you're very conditioned in prison. it's a difficult place to be. i often felt i didn't fit in. i'd keep myself to myself. i had a certain few people that i would talk to. but you don't tend to talk about your case. your two sons have stood by you. yes. what does that mean to you? everything, yep. i don't know what i'd have done without them. it's meant everything, their support. they've stood by me. they've li
