but it could be enough to break through in iowa. >> bakari, with the exception of governor desantis,been relatively hands off and even complimentary with tim scott, nikki haley. clearly he sees it as a benefit to him to have as many people in the race. >> the problem most republicans don't realize, it's a structural problem within the republican party. they didn't go back and change the structure of otheir primaries. so, basically when somebody wins the primary, even if they win it with 25% or 30% of the vote, they get all of those delegates to be the next nominee for president. so, the more people who are in the race, the more it benefits donald trump. i would also say that there is no benefit to donald trump for going after somebody, as mark said, with the disposition of somebody like tim scott. people like tim scott. he's genuinely likable. you feel like although you may disagree with him, he's in it because he believes in what abraham lincoln called the better angels in our effort. mike pence, getting in the race soon, or somebody like chris christie, he won't have a choice becau

but bakari -- >> the campaign season has started. >> and now the opportunity is to interact with thego up and we need to see more of those opportunities. >> mark short? >> i think the real campaign begins this summer. in 2008, rudy giuliani was way ahead of the field. in 2011 in the summer of 2011, michelle bachman won the iowa poll and before that was jeb bush and before that was donald trump. it is now about to be real and are the candidates in a debate stage with each other an real issues will be put forward. i think to alyssa's comment, i think mike will run candidly as the only conservative in this race. he's going to be the one unapologetically pro-life and one that has seen our party in many cases retreat from being the one who is advocating for freedom across the globe. and for a limited free market economy. >> you mentioned debates so let's talk about that. because the rnc has put out their criteria for being able to get on the debate stage which will be august 13th in milwaukee. you are going to have to reach at least 1% in three national or rnc recognized polls, a minimum

. >> bakari, you're a democrat, but also live in south carolina, which is a very important state for there. do you think that based on your political acumen, there are any communities for real for any of these candidates to overtake trump? >> not really, i don't think the talent level is there -- >> i don't think they'll challenge donald trump. i think there are people who provide alternatives like tim scott or nikki haley with the appearance. i'm not certain that particularly in south carolina, that is donald trump's state until someone else proves oerz. one thing the republican party, we were talking about this in the back. the advantage they have other democrats and the white house and the dnc both need to wake up is by having this healthy, and i don't mean healthy in terms of ideas, but just competitive primary, they're actually going to engage their base, register voters, have a voter enthusiasm advantage. and we're not doing anything. we had a president who spoke late on a friday night. we did mass an amazing piece of bipartisan legislation again. we expect that, but we have to

. >> but given you worked for her as governor, and you also worked for mcmaster, bakari mentioned she signed that 20-week abortion ban saying she felt that's what she could get passed at the time. what did you make of the fact that she didn't offer a specific on what -- how many weeks into pregnancy she would ban abortion? >> i think while the clock is ticking on this race, as david talked about, there's plenty of time for candidates, including governor haley, including a number of them to continue to flesh out issues. she's going to have to continue to flesh out this issue along with a couple of other ones we've talked about over the course of the evening. i expect that iowa caucus-goers, new hampshire voters are going to try to pin her down on that, and she's going to be responsible for answering it. >> i think it was incredibly significant the nuanced answer she gave on abortion. love it or hate it, that was probably the most laying out the facts and reality of what doing abortion policy at a federal level requires. i worked in the house where every year on the anniversary of roe,
