pipeline safety agency is issuing a safety warning on crude oil produced in the bakken. as brian mentioned, this comes just days after a train carrying bakken crude derailed and exploded into a massive fireball. let's go to jackie deangelis with more. >> good afternoon, mandy. transportation of crude oil supplies via rail, a huge theme this year. in fact, there are industry estimates saying we could bump up to the range of 700 to 750,000 barrels of crude being shipped via rail per day. that is a pretty staggering amount there. but recently, of course, these accidents are putting people on high alert, specifically in north dakota's bakken shale region, especially in light of last week's bnsf railway train collision and that explosion that you're discussing. at issue here, why the unrefined crude supplies are exploding. typically you see that, it's more of a threat after crude is actually been refined. after speculation that perhaps additives to the oil or even mislabeling might have been a contributing factor to these explosions. the ntsb is the federal authority that's n

of course their intention was to keep oil in the ground, whether we're talking about the bakken or the sands, but the industry's response has really gone back in time, when of course rail was the key way of moving oil. as you point out, rail is a much more expense if way of moving oil, and certainly a much more hazardous way, particularly when it comes to moving the very flammable volatile, light oil from the bakken, and i think de facto, we have gone from bad to worse in how we're moving oil. and that's really the achilles heel, is we don't really have the infrastructure to move it. >> what is the solution? should we be building more infrastructure? >> well, again, there doesn't seem to be an appetite for pipelines, and remember, to fulfill the production goals of either the people in the shale place or oil sands we're going to need four to five keystone excels. if you are going to see go from 2 to 5 million, and i just don't think there is the public appetite for four or five keystone xl's, but that is what we would be talking in terms of building the infrastructure needed to facilit

right now, if we look at the activity levels around the u.s., the permian basin, the bakken, eagle ford, we see billions and billions of more barrels of oil to be recovered from these plays over the next several years. and these will be decadal plays. if you look at the united states, we're pushing almost 9 million barrels of oil production per day and when we add in natural gas liquids, that's over 11 million a day. that's more than saudi arabia's making. right now we're on a very good trend. technology is in a renaissance period where it's going to add to recovery rates and production rates for decades to come. >> i have to say, when i listen to you, the people who are doubting me are doubting the science and the technology and the empirical vision your company has. not just -- you can't really fight the facts, is what i'm saying. >> well, if you look at just from a scientific basis, we know that we are recovering more and more oil from these shale reservoirs. back a number of years ago, the average recovery factor was maybe 5% to 7%. now we've pushed that up to 9% to 12%. ultimately

secondly, yesterday senator john hoeven of north dakota where the booming bakken oil shale fields arehat companies are being forced to deliver their product by rail instead of by pipeline. eventually, they imagine that as much as 100,000 barrels a day could be delivered by pipeline. and thirdly, the administration continues to come under increasing pressure from environmentalist. earlier this week the head of the greenpeace movement said that the president is undermining his own climate change plan. he said, quote: adding insult to injury, the fossil fuel industry helps to boost export of its dirty energy abroad from the keystone xl pipeline to proposals to create huge coal and lng export facilities. even the president's visit just yesterday to that ge engine plant in wisconsin is raising eyebrows because the engines produced at that plant are oftentimes used to provide power at oil exploration fields. arthel: and, doug, as you know, some of the critics are saying, hey, listen, guys, if it ain't used here, that oil from canada is going to be used somewhere. >> reporter: that's exactly

you said this is something we should look to as a concern for the bakken, but i thought most of thatut by rail. >> it's coming out by rail, but we also have a significant amount that is being shipped down, the heavy bitumen in alber alberta, and that is very heavy. you have to keep it heated. when you have well below subzero-degree temperatures, you are going to impact production. you're also going to impact production via freeze-offs with a lot of snow, a lot of ice on the ground, it's difficult to get a lot of oil. it's difficult to get natural gas out of the market right now. and therefore, that is causing concern and is helping to support price at these levels. >> where will we be next week or so because of the weather? >> right now, again, i think we're going to find that base there, and i'm looking for prices to start moving higher, back towards into that upper $95 to $100 range. this is the range that's effectively where we've been, in that $105, $90 range. i think i was on a few weeks ago, and this is certainly the range i expect prices to yo-yo in between for the remainder o
