we would like to institutionalize it more into the regular school day of balboa. i would like to introduce my colleague. >> i am a former student of balboa high school and i am currently co-teaching the debate class. the high was involved in the first in section of the urban the vaguely and went to college. i really believe in the transformative power of this activity. i will focus my speech on the challenges that we run off against in deploying this pilot program. we have had the pilot program up and running. the program has had several instances of success. the first challenge is attendance. there have been an average of the students that regularly show up to class. this has been one aspect that we have struggled the most with a sense of the students we work with have already had truancy problems. they have already dropped out of school and, in some other form, given up in the educational system. that is an issue we have run up against. the students that participate in the program have clearly benefited from it. the amount of time we get with them is a total of

balboa park. we're focusing on just the swimming pool. balboa park has received several other investments over the past years including public land. but the swimming pool remains as one of the last outstanding large investments to be made at the property. it is located close to transit. it has a lot of potential to be one of our swimming pool turnaround stories, like with hamilton. were the usage goes from ok to 130% more, which is what we have seen that hamilton, proposed renovation. george christopher playground. this is one example of many playgrounds i think we will see highlighted in this bond of what we call a failing playground. george christopher is an old playground. you can see the sand, the dilapidated ceilings it. it is pressure treated lumber, which is one of our main goals with this bond, to remove an address our pressure treated lumber sides. whenever we have worked with you, whether it's on balboa park or keeping vital services in the communitiesople with disabilities stay in their homes, on small-business issues, on housing and homeless issues, and service and support animals, i have been impressed by how so many of you consistently choose to do more than the minimum. we always want to comply with the codes and legal requirements, but you have chosen to do what is best for the city and people with disabilities. san francisco is a national model because of those choices. thank you for giving me so many examples of how to do things right. i really appreciate it. second, here is the brief reminder and you have already absorbed this. if i always want to emphasize that while architectural access issues are a critically important part of the community, the wheelchair users and people with mobility disabilities only comprise about 12% of the disability community. most people with disabilities like myself have hidden disabilities like hidden elvises, chemical sensitivities, heart conditions, lung conditions, all sorts of hidden ortho

i know those schools a little better, but i know balboa, washington, and mission pretty well, too. i did something a little different when i was working in government. when i was working at public works, i ended up having to clean all the city. the way we did it when it came to the schools was we talked to your principles and tried to get you involved. during those years, we got the saturday clean it teams, where a lot of your cohorts are getting credit for working with us. they are planting trees, like getting the environment going. i hate going to other schools. when the school is well kept, clean, when the neighbors feel that the students are in and out of the school and respecting everybody's right to have a nice place to go to, you feel a lot better. we did that with you as students, with your principals, and many of your teachers. you got credit for it as well. we even painted some of the benches red for those eagles. a lot of the other school sports areas. we are working hard to make sure you have jobs when you come out of school. that is what i have been working on.
