welcome, everybody, to balboa park.nd i know we have a couple of hosts and i want to meet and recognize of course our recreation and park department. phil is here. he'll speak in a minute. also recognizing john avalos, our supervisor for this district. but often a voice at the board in this city about issues of equity, and that is why i think it's important that we announced it at a place like balboa park. i live here just literally two minutes away, so, i often see this park completely crowded with so many families, especially with all the great improvements that rec and park has put in, in collaboration with the supervisor, because i know that some of his discretionary funding has often gone in to support efforts here and, of course, across the street with the challenges of the -- both the bart and the muni station. but it is all about our neighborhoods. and i go back to what supervisor farrell said, and i want to again thank and appreciate supervisor farrell, his staff margo kelly, another great effort. this is what

and it is appropriate that we're here at balboa park. mark, john, and the mayor all talked about the improvements that have happened in this really, really important piece of open space. it's a dense neighborhoodv. it's in a transit corridor. and thanks to partnership and thanks to community support and thanks to the leadership of our elected officials we've made some incredible improvements here in the last few years. behind us, our new playground thanks to the support of the trust for public land. behind all of you is an incredible new skateboard park which is both a public -- another public-private partnership partially funded with bond funds. behind us even further is balboa pool which thanks to the 2012 parks bond will be renovated with a state-of-the-art swimming pool in a few years. the theme here is meeting evolving community needs. skateboarding has become more popular. the needs of our aquatics programs is changing. the needs of our playground is evolving and so, too, is technology. technology has a very important place in park

balboa loss their funding this past school year and due to the huge need for the academic services we stepped down in to help it run very limits programs utilizing very the money. however, due to some fund setting grants we're not able to stretch our programs to allow this service to continue. unfortunately, because of the refunding for high school after school programs balboa doesn't receive after school funding which means our communities high school which has a population of over 13 thousand students won't have any services.

one bart worker shows the process of opening the sacramento balboa bart station and shows the safety concerns workers face. >>> this man is under arrest after a vicious attack on a woman in san francisco's castro district. police say that christopher porter bailey of oakland is accused of robbing the female suspect and kicking her in the head while she was down. he pleaded not guilty. this happened during a gay pride weekend event early in the morning. bailey was one of several people who took part in the robbery. the district attorney says additional people will be brought to justice. >> there are two others that have been arrested since then and we are also looking of filing in those cases. more man likely, we will combine the cases together in the next few days so we can prosecute them all together. this is a very concerning case. the video shows the violence. very brutal assault on the victim and we want to be sure we get justice in this case. >> he was one of several public officials to attend the town hall meting tonight in the castro district. raise kron 4's phillipe jegal rep

there was a short chase that ended at balboa and king, that neighborhood. during this chase the car crashed and when officer tried to get the man, the driver to get out, the driver of the car tried to run over one of the officers. the officer was in fear for his life according to police and shot at the suspect. the suspect was hit at least once and was taken to the hospital, their condition unknown. again, the second person in that vehicle was also considered to be a robbery sus spent. they took off and are still trying to gather a description from the woman robbed by these people earlier in the night in downtown san jose to try to get a description to find this person. two officer-involved shootings. the first one, the suspect was hit and the second at san carlos and lincoln. that suspect did surrender and is now in custody. live in midtown, san jose, bob redell, today in the bay. >>> in the meantime new video just coming into our newsroom of crews hard at work pouring asphalt near the tlaz. i was the principal at balboa high school and a superintendent for several years in the central office. i've saw hundreds of programs come across my office in terms of programs that were design to serve youth. and i can attest cold hardly that the first tea is the best programs that we have in san francisco. and i think it's important to understand that this issue in terms of the golden gate park lease should not be a we verses them for youth verses older golfers. we can look at this in terms of how we can grow this program in san francisco and form a stronger community of golfers. i want to share with you a letter that would attest one of the segments of our programs that we don't have here this morning are the teachers in the program. i'm going to share with you a letter that i received from one of our teachers. the purpose of this letter is to share with you my personal experience in having my sunts participate in the first tea program. i've had my first grade class participate. when i first started with the first tea i thought the students would learn to play golf. i thought that w

in particular, our plan includes beefing up transit service in key corridors, in particular the balboa park area which means extra trains on the j line, extra service along the mission corridor which we saw last time was heavy. we're also -- some of the things that we learned from our first experience, we will in the afternoons, for example, increase the hours that we have, parking control officers to help with traffic flow to and from the bridge and along the key downtown streets. we will also expand the casual car pooling areas down there to help people get around. and our work force did an extraordinary job in coming to work last time to allow us to provide the extra service to help to ease some of the hardship that we're talking about. but we're prepared to do everything we can. we'll have our management team out as ambassadors to provide information. so, we're committed to helping to ease the pain as best we can, but clearly expect crowding and there will be pain and no one will have -- going anywhere in the region who will have a normal kind of day. we can be assured of that. but
