attending balboa high school was one of the highlights of her childhood and her son is sa stay tuned there now. some of the things that she loves on -- is that multigenerations from her family have been there and that anything she could want is there. her mother passed away from cancer when she was 15. and during her battle with cancer, her mother taught her and her sister how to pay the bills and cook for themselves so that they would know how to live on their own. the fact that they were orphans was kept a secret. jackie did well in school, even graduating as one of the it's top 100 students and determined not to get found out and sent to foster care. her community work began in 2008 wher hen her daughter's teacher asked yakie if she would be traffic coordinator for the school, the idea for the walking school bus where walk to school and an adult leader. and so you have every wednesday now, walk to win wednesdays. children and their families will walk about a quarter mile to the elementary school. it's an family activity that she's been part of. she's been the p.t.a. president at l

this is one of two historic buildings in district 11, the other one is balboa high school. i have so many points to cover. this is 12 years in the making. commissioner lee, i appreciate all of your questions, but we have worked so hard in ascertaining funding, not only locally, through the state, but also federal aid. back in 2001, i put together a package for the national historic places, and they do a program every year, the 11 most endangered spaces. we were number 12 and angel island got in. this is a community, as commissioner bonilla knows, that is really neglected, forgotten. the highest number of children and youth in san francisco, and all of these programs taking place at the moment are directed toward children, youth, and young adults. i am also a board member of the geneva office building. this goes back a long time. we are in the initial phases of fundraising. we are looking at our local community, but district 11, as you know, is a working-class neighborhood. trying to raise funds out of the district is quite difficult because nobody knows -- few people know a

ago, i was allowed to interview in high school that nobody wanted to go to in san francisco, and a net even inspired fear in some community members, and that was balboa. i want to tell you that it was the best place for me at the time, and it is still the best place. i think it has become one of the best high schools, and it is because of all the teachers and students who have been there in the last 14 years and sort of made it what it was. i would not wish to be anywhere else. thank you.
