on behalf of the entire balboa high school community i send my heartfelt thanks for knowledge, innovation and passion in supporting some of our most remarkable and gifted students. through your efforts, we are better prepared to fulfill the promise of a fully integrated classroom and school. as principal, i cannot say enough about this wonderful group of educators and i'm grateful to have caring and thoughtful teach others my staff. congratulations on a job well done, kevin kerr, principal. he is at school at a parent meeting and if we could have the four stand up. great group in our special education department. . >> i am a youth commissioner as well as a student at balboa high school. i believe the voice of youth should matter and does matter in the democratic process of san francisco government. the duty of the commission, according to the city charter, is to meet the needs of san francisco youth and look for possible policy changes to meet those. that is why we are here today on valentine's day. i have met with mr. chu from the san francisco unified school district. i understand the hardship about how to implement this. as a youth commissioner, i would love to work with the board of supervisors, sfmta, sfusc, and community organizations to make this happen. >> my name is judy. i am here to speak about the youth passes. >> my name is rosa. i go to washington high school. >> i go to lincoln high school. we are youth leaders from chinatown [unintelligible] i take three buses to sunset district. it takes one hour to get to school. i need to be in school by 7:30 am my family does not have a car. public transportation is important to us. the main importance for us is t

balboa high school. i thank god that mary rodgers had that fortitude. that is what i am thinking about. we will take that same fortitude, with at this climate across races and nationalities, we need to represent mary rodgers. this building should represent and reflect what the community is and it is our job to work together to make that happen. i believe that there's a will and a desire in this city to make it happen. and i thank god, first of all, the back when i was a knucklehead in school, they had to integrate bawa loopy -- guadalupe, they wanted to make sure that it was. i knew that we were special, but they treated us a little special because they had to keep us in their. by the time i got out of the sixth grade, there were a few issues i remember my mother telling me -- boy, do not make me come get you. when we build this building, we want to make sure that we are planning together, building together, making money together. i do not want her to say boy, do not make me come and get you. let's be in let's not wait for egypt and jerusalem. -- let's

attending balboa high school was one of the highlights of her childhood and her son is sa stay tuned there now. some of the things that she loves on -- is that multigenerations from her family have been there and that anything she could want is there. her mother passed away from cancer when she was 15. and during her battle with cancer, her mother taught her and her sister how to pay the bills and cook for themselves so that they would know how to live on their own. the fact that they were orphans was kept a secret. jackie did well in school, even graduating as one of the it's top 100 students and determined not to get found out and sent to foster care. her community work began in 2008 wher hen her daughter's teacher asked yakie if she would be traffic coordinator for the school, the idea for the walking school bus where walk to school and an adult leader. and so you have every wednesday now, walk to win wednesdays. children and their families will walk about a quarter mile to the elementary school. it's an family activity that she's been part of. she's been the p.t.a. president at l

this is one of two historic buildings in district 11, the other one is balboa high school. i have so many points to cover. this is 12 years in the making. commissioner lee, i appreciate all of your questions, but we have worked so hard in ascertaining funding, not only locally, through the state, but also federal aid. back in 2001, i put together a package for the national historic places, and they do a program every year, the 11 most endangered spaces. we were number 12 and angel island got in. this is a community, as commissioner bonilla knows, that is really neglected, forgotten. the highest number of children and youth in san francisco, and all of these programs taking place at the moment are directed toward children, youth, and young adults. i am also a board member of the geneva office building. this goes back a long time. we are in the initial phases of fundraising. we are looking at our local community, but district 11, as you know, is a working-class neighborhood. trying to raise funds out of the district is quite difficult because nobody knows -- few people know a

and as a graduate of balboa high school, i contacted parents of the former students who lived in the valley to present the plan. the head of the merchant association gathered merchants and residents together and the san francisco executive park advisory committee was established. to this day it still exists. shirley jones is the president and i venture to guess no other advisory committee has lasted that long in this city. there was great enthusiasm and commitment to see the project go forward. however, there was a matter of getting approval from the planning commission, board of supervisors, and financing and with the help of the mayor at the time, we had anonymous approval from the planning commission with the support of several supervisors. it was approved in 1979. after being turned down by 32 lenders, mr. campbell and mcduffy found financing for the first building now known as five thomas millen circle. from the beginning it was our desire to change the visual entryway to the city with ample landscaping around the office buildings. i sought out the advice of a forester i knew to

ago, i was allowed to interview in high school that nobody wanted to go to in san francisco, and a net even inspired fear in some community members, and that was balboa. i want to tell you that it was the best place for me at the time, and it is still the best place. i think it has become one of the best high schools, and it is because of all the teachers and students who have been there in the last 14 years and sort of made it what it was. i would not wish to be anywhere else. thank you. [applause] >> i give. so our january teacher of the month is julie from ruth asawa school of the arts, who is our humanities teacher. what inspires julie is when a student's sense for you to video or brings her a book and says, "this reminds me of what we were talking about in class." she considered declining the award as many of these amazing people did because it seem self- serving in light of the economic crisis but accepting it allows it to reflect on the reasons why she would not choose to spend her days in any other light. congratulations. >> i can top-of teenagers all day, but a roomful of grown-ups -- [laughter] they do wonderful work. they gave me a grab my
