the governor ordered a wide evacuation, baldwin, mobile counties but then scaled it back.we were looking at the possibility of needing to do the evacuation, such a large storm with tropical force winds extending over 200 miles out from the center of the storm. as that was on a very easterly track, we couldn't wait until it got up on the coast of alabama. so the governor made some decisions. mainly to try to get people to understand how serious the storm could be. then on monday after meeting with local officials, he modified that evacuation order and put some of the local officials to where they could go in to certain areas that they felt needed to be focused on and then have others that could stay in place unless we felt they absolutely had to get out. >> the timing of the hurricane, we've been talking a lot about tropical storm now but headed to a hurricane. the anniversary the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina. when we spoke to mobile's mayor earlier, sam jones, he had said that there have been some changes that have been implemented since hurricane katrina. so h

in alabama, a mandatory evacuation order has been ordered for parts of baldwin and mobile and thousands of homes in miami-dade countysaac now and how fast is it moving? >> good morning and yes, all eyes are watching the gulf as this very broad system is just kind of winding its way even more slowly than it had been. by the way, another update from the national hurricane center coming up in just about a half an hour. but it's moving towards the northwest at about 7 miles an hour. this out of gulf port, mississippi. the waves are kicking up, but not the worst we'll expect for the afternoon. conditions will be deteriorating rapidly. perhaps after about the 2:00 hour. as i mentioned, this is moving slowly to the northwest. it's just a little less than 100 miles out of the gulf of mississippi. out of the mouth of the mississippi. some of the wind gusts we have seen are right around 40 miles an hour. it's going to creep along the coast, perhaps make landfall around the midnight hour, 2:00 in the morning, but we'll have meteorologists keeping you updated. >> thank you. the mandatory evacuation ordered include grand isle, l
