it's still tracking toward the east so, parts of italy, even over toward the balkan peninsula, you'reo be seeing the threat of severe weather. even some heavy rainfall which has already been reported toward the south. large hail and even some tornadoes very well possible. especially the ones close to shore. this is still an ongoing weather situation. talking about the heavy rains, i do want to take you to the southern hemisphere. we're in the height of rainy season in brazil, by the way. what we have been seeing over the last week or so, is actually some very heavy rainfall. this is the past seven days of total precipitation. based on satellite imagery, 300 to 400 millimeters has been reported in some areas out here. that has been causing some fairly significant flooding, not only for parts of brazil where we have been seeing some fairly incredible images coming out of but even over toward the west in chile, northern chill yeerks you have been seeing some flooding. in peru a very dangerous landslide took place. this is something we're going to talk about actually a little bit later on

we often see this set up in the wintertime, across the balkan peninsula, thanks to a strong ridge ofing across southern italy. this is forming north to northeast of the wind coming off of a mountain range that's right along the coast of croatia. think of this as almost a river or a dammed up river. we get this cold dense air forming behind this mountain range, and this is actually called the dinar mountains. even eventually it funnels right down the mountainside speeding up as it does so reaching hurricane force strength along the coast, and causing all kinds of destruction as you saw a moment ago. all thanks to the pressure and temperature gradients. look at the winds going forward in time. sarajevo gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour through friday into saturday. on top of that impressive snowfall totals expected in the balkans. we've measured well over a foot of snow with an additional 25 to 30 centimeters in the forecast. so that's what it sounds like and that's what it feels like to have hurricane force winds. amazing. >> to hear that just a minute ago, incredibly intense. derek
