we went to war twice in the balkans in bosnia and kosovo to prevent a split along religious lines. the middle east is far more important and far more dangerous in the balkans. we need to watch this. finally, on al qaeda -- for various legal and political and domestic reasons and diplomatic reasons, we see this as a war but we have not done a good job explaining to the american people the implications of that. if it is a war, why do we put these people on trial? this is a complex issue that is now crystallized in the criticism of the drones. we don't want to have a lack of clarity about our goals and our tools lead to a situation where we are afraid to go after these people because we don't think we have enough legitimacy, we don't think we have enough support from the american people. throughout the broader middle east in the areas where there is not effective government control, al-qaeda or groups elected to them pop up and they are a threat to the stability of the region and us and they need to be kept under the highest pressure. i will stop there, thank you very much. east, we have this frontal area which is pushing off towards the back black sea, already into the balkans. this has been bringing some very heavy rains and even flooding conditions. i want to show you video coming out of this area where heavy rain over the weekend has caused rivers to burst throughout sloven slovenia, reld alarms sounded as some floods cut off entire communities here. these cars are under water. but also in croatia, they were also sit by heavy rain and strong winds, which flooded streets and brought down trees, although damage was minimal here. it does go to show that the strength of these storms as they did push overhead. now, once again, in italy, we have this other storm system a little bit farther towards the west across the iberian peps la, a low pushing off here, bringing rain showers for you. off towards the north, frontal area diving towards the south, bringing gusty winds, heavy winds across the scandinavian peninsula, even some snow. 83 kilometer-per-hour winds were rormded here. temperatures are also reflecting the cooldown coming in from the north, though. sto

has acquitted of desecration former generals of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the balkan conflicts in the 1990's. that's where we will stay for the moment. the acquittal of those two former generals. they had been convicted of war crimes and now they have been told they can go free. this is the reaction from their supporters in the capital of croatia following the decision. this was for atrocities against serbs in the former yugoslavia. our correspondent, peter, is there. give us the backdrop before we ask what happened. present is an interesting case. there was some surprise of the acquittals today. the background is the two were two croatian generals involved in a military offensive by the croatians to retake the serb- occupied enclave in 1995 and august. it was alleged they had been involved in expelling serbian civilians and there were charges of murder and plunder and deportation and better things. it came to trial in march of 2008 and predicted in april last year and found guilty. one was given 24 years in jail and the other was given 18 years. on appeal, by a major
