he makes stops in baltimore. he comments on slavery in baltimore. he comments being in a baltimore in a hotel and being served by someone by a waiter who he suddenly realizes. he talks about his feelings of kind of horror, of being, you know, sort of served by an enslaved man anyway in the guise sam weller in these columns, the albany paper, smallwood says, i met dickens when he came to town and i, you know, led to a slave jail that was there was kind of an infamous slave trader in washington by name of william williams. and his slave jail was right. the national mall, believe it or not, if you walked from the white house to the. he'd go right by and. so according to this, you know, true or false account, samuel or i smallwood helped lead dickens to see this slave jail and. could this be true? it definitely could. you know small was in town. dickens was followed a big crowd as he went around town because he very popular guy and so it's certainly possible that small would was in the crowd following dickens around and also small dickens very intereste

and at least in certain circles in baltimore. and i this book is so serious and there's so many sad things like chuckled in places reading about hope's letters kind of quest for respectability. yeah, he seems to have tirelessly quested not only for money, which he made an awful lot of, but for respectability and for except instance, among slaveholding elite and what's interesting, you know, it's sort of the psychology that's interesting. it's seen as the slave holders, though, they were very dependent on the slave traders. they an awful lot of, but for acceptance among baltimore's slaveholding elite. what is interesting, sort of the psychology that is interesting, it seems the slaveholders, though very dependent on the slave traders, they use the services of the slave traders. they wanted somebody to look down on. so, you could tell yourself that you were a kind master, and you were treating your people well, and you were feeding them well, but that guy, he is just all about the money. so, funny little things in researching this

we have a letter he wrote down in baltimore. most of what we know about the confederates, we know because the union soldiers, civilians, or doctors are talking about them, naming them. not a lot of accounts from the confederates themselves. this is one of those unusual accounts. theophilus judge, second battalion of the georgia infantry registry. this is the brigade that is up in the center of the union line, attacking the evening of july 2nd, before they have the pickett's charge, robert e. lee looked at this. this is a man that is wounded, probably wounded on the secondary battle . that is when they are engaged. it is not in his service record . this confederate soldier is born in connecticut, and there in lies a story. we got a confederate yankee here on the property. he says, and i want to show you how we know this, he moved to macon, georgia in about 1856, about five years before the civil war, he relocated down to macon, georgia, he gets property there next thing you know, he gets into confederate service. he said 12 when

in baltimore. many of these wounded confederate, they want to shift them out of here. they are prisoners of war. if they are to building wounded, they will go out to letterman general haas. member, this is a field goal. mr. spengler tells us the field hospital is in existence for five weeks and two days. august 6 1863 it's shot up and they start the hospital east of gettysburg the third week of july. transferred out over to the general hospital to have patience wounded here. by the way, the spengler's and paid. they were allowed to use one room in their own house. the surgeons aired one room out of six that were located in their house so they could actually say and they will help the wounded as best they can. they don't clean the property. they stay on the property. the confederates if you are well enough, you are on the train and shipped out. may go to baltimore. depending on who you are, you will end up in a prisoner of war camp or if you're lucky, you make it parole. you sign a sheet of paper th
