baltimore city schools will remain closed today. i want to sort of explain to you how this all got started here in baltimore. of course you'll remember not far from where we are right now there were protests. there were demonstrations that turned violent at a mall here at mondawmin mall about 14 hours or so ago. that is not far from the new shiel low baptist church that was where the funeral was held for 25-year-old freddie gray who died from a spinal cord injury while he was in police custody. we still don't know what happened there or why that happened. a lot of the protesters ended up at the western district police station, demanding answers, the mayor saying as the investigation moves forward, there will be someone held accountable for what happened to freddie gray. in the meantime the gray family clergy here in town some of the community groups and the citizens folks who just live in the homes in this area have been imploring the rioters to not tear apart their city. we hope that will be the case as we move into the day today. w

john is live in baltimore. the city may have turned a corner according to the mayor. is that what you are hearing or feeling today? >> i don't think baltimore's turned any corners just yet. it's going to be a long time before anybody can get around to dealing with the issues that led to monday night. i suppose compared to monday night, it has turned a little bit of a corner. last night when the curfew came, it was a very different scene from what we saw the night before. this is the junction of nest and pennsylvania avenue where we're talking about. i'm at city hall at the moment and there last night there was no smoke deployed, there was no pepper ball witness are no mace being thrown around, no tear gas. it fell to families and community leaders in the end to clear the streets. the police backed off and at one point, families were fighting each other to get off the streets. in the end as you will see now in this report, the curfew was imposed, but there are many questions that avoids from it and what else has been happening in the city the past 24 hours. >> let's go
