federal agents arrest a baltimore postal worker. the fayette street employee is accused of opening more than 1200 greeting cards and stealing the gift inside. megan gilliland is live from the post office with more on how they caught him. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, patrice over the past three months investigators say they were finding 20 to 100 greeting cards through almost every day. they launched an investigation and caught andrew walsh an employee here at the fayette street office in the act. according to court paper had been opening the greeting cards and stealing the co contents ine from gift cards to cash. the gift card never made it. >> i was angry. how could somebody steal from a 3-year-old. i'm sure they did not know how old my granddaughter was, but still the birth card said happy birthday 3 years old. >> reporter: it violates the public trust. i mean, the mail there should be trust when you send things through the mail. >> reporter: police arrested walsh on tuesday night at his home in cockeysville. wh

. >>> a baltimore postal worker is facing charges accused of stealing gift cards out of the mail. good morning, once again, andrea. >>> good morning, don and everyone. it was at this branch that an employee would rip open pieces of mail. wjz spoke to one of the victims who had their gift card intended for a 3-year-old stolen. >> my daughter-in-law called me and said, you know the gift card you sent, we never got it. >> reporter: they were stunned to learn what happened to a 50- dollar gift card they sent to their granddaughter. the authorities believe it was stolen. >> and our 3 year old's birthday present. you must have been upset. >> yes, i was. >> the usps monitored the building sinsyne when 20 to 100 cards disappeared every night. authorities say in total, 1200 pieces of mail were ripped apart. we had to open the birthday card, he kept the card, it said happy birthday 3-year-old. >> and they gave the gift card number to investigators. and that information eventually lead them to the night superriser at the post office. the 51-year-old who lives in the area and he's been, whoin

. >>> a baltimore pos taf worker is accusework --postal worker if stealing hundreds of gift cards from the mail. >> reporter: good morning, patrice, we're along the fayette street post office where 51 year-old andrew walsh used to be the overnight shift supervisor that is until he was caught on camera opening up greeting cards and stealing the gift cards and cash that were inside. one of the victims this grandmother in harford county. in january chris mailed a birthday card to her 3 years old granddaughter in virginia with a $50 gift card tucked inside. later she received an envelope marked to sender to the postal -- from the postal service and she was told that she was a victim of postal theft. >> i will never send a gift card or a check in it. never, it's sad. >> reporter: investigators were able to track some of the missing gift cards ask discovered that the phone number used upon purchase was walsh's a postal employee here. police arrested walsh on tuesday night at his home at cockeysville. while at his home they recovered 400 gift cards inside of his car. if he is convicted, he co
