seaboardv what is unique about the path is how many major metropolitan coastal areas could be impacted by a weakening hurricane. a category one or a category two, crossing east of baltimore, philadelphia, right over long island, new york city, early sunday afternoon. you're looking at a storm surge of maybe up to 10 feet in some inlets and bays. rain up to 15 inches. wind speeds still hurricane force. possibly around lower manhattan. wind speeds are higher away from the ground. the ground acts like friction and slows things down. higher up. in the downtown skyscrapers. something we don't want to see moving towards new york come sunday. now there's one little bit of hope if you look at the satellite view we have a weather system there crossing through the great lakes. there is some hope that that might scoot irene further offshore. that is something we're hoping for tonight, but it looks like irene is going to make a beeline up the east coast through sunday impacting almost every major city on the eastern seaboard. back to you. >> it is fascinating to see the course of the hurricane. thank you, rob. we'll keep a close eye on what's happening with irene. go to nbcbayarea.c
