but right now, the heaviest rainfall coming through for areas like baltimore, washington, d.c. here is the center of the circulation of what's left of sandy. and this is where we're going to see it moving over towards the west. but the problem is on the backside of that we're talking about some very heavy snowfall. now, the big story, of course, has been the storm surge. want to talk about some of the records that have been broken. for battery park we had a high of 13.88 feet. and then for sandy hook, we're talking 13.31. all types of records were broken. that's why we're seeing the flooding coming out of these areas. it was way too much with the wall of water coming through. right now, the winds are very gusty out there. for new york, winds roughly around 25, 26. we point this out to you because of that hanging skyscraper. i'm sure a lot of people are very concerned about that. in addition to all the flooding and the rain and, of course, soledad it will be very cold when you add in that wind. it's going to be miserable for people who are without power. >> oh, my goodness. you'

you will find accident activity southbound on the baltimore- washington parkway approaching 450 tying up the left side of the highway. still a lot of tree debris and leaves to clean up off the highway so be careful. again this morning, service has been suspended on metro against today which means metrobus, metro access, montgomery county ride-on buses, service suspended. amtrak northeast corridor, no service again today. we've got a lot of clean-up in that needs to be done on the road. little falls parkway closed between massachusetts avenue and river road. a portion of the sligo creek parkway shut down between wayne avenue and piney branch. 355 near dr. perry, we have storm drainable there that we have to clean up before you can get by. 270, a large tree hanging over the right side of the road at father hurley boulevard. that is just a few of the hot spots around town. the more people get out and about, the more we're hearing from folks. we're hearing where they've got trees down, wires down and so forth. if you come up to an intersection where the traffic lights are not working, you

most populous, washington, baltimore, philadelphia, new york, long island, and into new england. officials declare emergency up-and-down that coast from the carolinas to maine. hurricane sandy is expected to make landfall earlier than we thought. that is important. we will get into the details. it is in south jersey right around atlantic city. the exact location is not that important. the whole region will get it. the flooding has begun in jersey and in new york. sandy is on a collision course with a winter storm from the west. and a blast of frigid air from the north. when the three systems meet, forecasters say that will create a once-in-a-lifetime weather phenomenon. >> do not underestimate this storm. these forecasts for the surge are really extraordinary. though are talking about surges that we have not seen before. there is nothing at all to be taken lightly. >> this is not a time to an show off. this is not a time to be stupid. this is a time to save yourself and your family. >>shepard: the governors of new york and jersey and the east coast grinding to a halt. 5,000 fligh

what's been interesting is we've had some of the highest gusts lately near the baltimore and washington, d.c. too. you had heavier rain, five inches of rain in baltimore and we had a 55 mile per hour gust and look at this, washington, d.c., one of the highest gusty winds. 06 mile per hour gusts and we have trees down in and around the greater d.c. area. so it's still dangerous. it will weaken rapidly as we go throughout the night to early tomorrow morning and tomorrow will be a little bit l better but wait until tomorrow afternoon before you start get out there and looking around to clean up from this huge mess. >> i'm struck by the geographic scope of the storm. we've had a lot of concentration on its effect on the coast particularly negotiating city and the new jersey coast. in the list of states i just read that have experienced death and other than new york, it was one each. it included west virginia. what is a storm doing in west virginia? how did a hurricane occur that far inland? >> it's a blizzard with snow, a snowacane. that's unheard of. jim cantore, he said this was the colde
