nbc's dylan dreyer has our report tonight from bangor, maine. >> reporter: in maine the snow fell fast and furiously. >> it's too early for snow. >> reporter: much of the state got record snowfall for this early in the season. the problem with a storm this size this early in the season is all the fall foliage. you have this heavy, wet snow that clings to the leaves. it adds weight to the branches. and they can bend or break onto power lines. crews worked through the night and into today trying to restore power to more than 100,000 customers. >> we're surprised we got as much snow as we got. >> reporter: blinding snow and winds of nearly 50 miles per hour slammed massachusetts. sports fans in north carolina braved blizzardlike conditions to watch appalachian state take on georgia state. >> lots of layers. >> reporter: columbia, south carolina, saw its earliest snow ever recorded. there were dangerous driving conditions in north carolina and georgia as well as records set in florida where cold air brought new lows to miami, daytona beach and orlando. so is this a sign of a rough season a

weather channel meteorologist keith carson is bangor, maine. you're standing in more than a foot of snow. something maine is used to but not this early, right? >> reporter: right. something to know about maine they're really tough. november 1st, 2nd, it's a little bit early. we're in downtown bangor, which is the down east part of maine, northern down east border, if you will. they moved the snow out of the street. they got a foot officially. what is interesting about the storm it's the clash of the two seasons. take a look at the trees behind me. they still have full foliage on them. that's kind of the anomaly. you have the trees with the leaves. you have snow on top of them, that's part of the reason we're seeing so many power outages. for maine 140,000 people without power is a pretty big percentage. the entire state only has a million people in population. portland, maine, didn't get hit by the storm. that's a pretty big story. the leaves you have the type of snow it is. it's a thick kind of snow. it gets driven into the trees. 50 miles per

this was a record shattering for even bangor maine. had 14 inches of snow.e had double digit snowfall. what does that mean for now? you can see it rocketing up. it's still windy. still chilly. even the deep south we were down to 38 last night. now we're at 46. we're heading in the right direction. so what is next? we have a big rain storm heading for areas texas, oklahoma and arkansas. this will be around for election day too. we'll have to keep that in mind. it really shouldn't stop too many people from getting to the polls. a slow warm-up in the east. but not bad. we get rid of a lot of the frigid air. we will have that heavy rain and maybe an isolated flooding threat down there in areas of texas, arkansas, louisiana. i think most trouble thing for all of that can look into the future of these weather model, we have another possible nor'easter coming and then another huge shot of cold air right behind that for next week. if you don't like the cold and chilly weather for the eastern u.s. we leave you with a shot of washington, d.c. after a cold weekend and

bangor, maine is one of the last cities getting the snow. we did pick up considerable snow last night. a lot of people waking up that have to clean their car off and shovel the walk and get rid of the big slushy mess at the end of the driveway. the big cities did okay from boston down providence, hartford, new york city, the roads are fine. more just a wet snow. all of the worst of it has definitely shifted up further towards the north. as far as the heaviest snow totals with areas around albany picked up ten inches of snow, binghampton picked up ten inches of snow. further to the south a little bit less except areas in west virginia picked up more. if we can go over to our weather one computer. as far as the impacts went further south, philadelphia and d.c. didn't pick up all that much. they didn't pick up that much in areas around baltimore. here's some of the historic snowfall totals. petersburg, west virginia, 20 inches. and some areas didn't pick up as much like hartford, connecticut. the other story out there i feel bad for the people

here's all that snow, mainly in the canadian mar times eastern maine in bangor and other places seeingw. boston area saw some snow earlier. we saw that cleaning up for the patriots game. they had a good dusting on the field out there. temperatures right new still chilly. we have been in the 40's. that is where we are. forty-two allentown. forty-three pottstown. forty-seven in philadelphia. forty-five in wilmington. forty-five in dover. now sustain wind, this is still about 15 to 20 miles an hour but still subsiding a bit. not as gusty as it was earlier. peak wind gusts at philadelphia international where we are at 48 miles an hour at 9:00 a.m. this morning. we are still seeing win gusts over 25 miles an hour and that will continue through most of the night. expect to still hear wind and those leaves to pick up as they did all day to day. wind chills in the 30's. this is because wind is still gusty makes it feel will cooler out there by tomorrow morning this will be closer to our air temperatures. even they win will die down overnight it will still than coal. fox future cast shows by ma
