steve bannon indicated to roger stone, let's talk. i want to know what you know.'s talk asap as a matter of fact in one of these emails. so this was important for the prosecution to get out there, to get into evidence because roger stone testified before members of congress that he had no contact about this kind of stuff with members of the campaign. >> yeah. a follow-up here because, shimon, prosecutors say in the summer of 2016 after wikileaks started to release the hacked data, stone emailed bannon, writing, quote, trump can still win, but time is running out. i know how to win, but it ain't pretty. so bannon said today that he thought that it was just about dirty tricks. what do you think? >> so he did say in court that, look, he looked at roger stone as a guy who was an expert in opposition research, who can get information on candidates that his guy was running against, donald trump, so he was interested in what information he had. he called him a dirty trickster. he tried to in some ways move himself -- or remove himself from this entire thing and trying to

and then you have steve bannon sitting there and saying, yes, %-p.e had 12 communications, up to 12 communications, and we have all these emails. so for the government's case, which is trying to prove that roger stone lied before the united states congress, this is critically important evidence. the other point, which i think has also been made but worth noting again. one of the things that's been really clear from the 302s that were released earlier this week related to the mueller investigation through bannon's testimony is that the campaign was trying to get this information and to win at any cost and to get the influence of a foreign adversary in the campaign. and so mueller was -- >> so nothing's changed. >> right. >> now it's ukraine, but then it was -- >> the intent is important, right? the fact is their intent there was to win at any cost and to basically say they knew russia had hacked emails and they were trying to get them. so, again, mueller couldn't make the case. that's not on trial here. but it's just really powerful evidence to sit he

what does the prosecution want out of bannon? >> yeah, and bannon's response was, let's talk asap.at roger stone was doing here, and so he's going to talk about how roger stone was offering help, offering wikileaks help, claiming that he had an intermediary, someone who was working as a middle man to get to julian assange in the embassy in london, at the ecuadorian embassy. there was a lot of talk of that today, about how roger stone was reaching out to everyone on the campaign, senior-level people, rick gates, steve bannon, the president himself, saying, hey, i can get you help. i can do what you need me to do. and that is what steve bannon is going to do. he's going to come in and talk about his communications with roger stone, at one point being angry at roger stone. it's going to be a really big day when steve bannon comes in. >> i'll bet. elie, i was asking that just because the idea of pardoning someone. people always ask me, and i say he's not going to be dragged out of the white house in handcuffs. someone is going to pardon him. people say, oh, it's state charges, but thes

any idea when bannon may come to court?ng to actually appear and testify, but certainly as you said, it's going to be a big day. prosecutors here yesterday in their opening statement and, really, in the direct examination, there's an fbi agent that has just taken the stand. she was laying out yesterday's -- bannon's role in all of this. the president's role in all of this. and they are certainly billing him as a big witness. and his whole involvement and this really is communications, emails and text messages with roger stone about roger stone's efforts to get some of these emails, get information on exactly what wikileaks had. in one exchange, roger stone tells steve bannon he knows how to win and it isn't going to be pretty, but he knows how the president, then candidate donald trump, could win and then bannon says to him, well, let's talk asap. and then there's another exchange between someone who works for steve bannon after that big dump in october from wikileaks where the person writes to roger stone, good work. so ce

steve bannon said to him, call me asap. steve bannon is a big figure.is rick gates, worked very closely on the campaign, deputy chairman on the campaign. he will be testifying as well about what he knew and in terms of what roger stone was saying about his contacts and intermediary and how much information he was sharing. >> the charges were he lied under oath before congress about his contacts with wikileaks and russians and communications with the white house. >> and mostly with wikileaks, the fact he was hiding this when they were asking him, were you talking to people? were you going to intermediaries? were you talking to people in the trump campaign. they're trying to show he lied about this, having a lot more contact with people, not just regular people in the campaign. prosecutors called steve bannon the ceo of the campaign, high level people inside the campain that roger stone was keeping them informed about what he was trying to do to ultimately help donald trump, help the campaign to reach out to wikileaks and get information from julian assan

what did bannon have to say? >> key witnesses against the prosecution.ne of the key witnesses, about the communications the campaign had, he as the ceo had with roger stone as the wikileaks stuff started lighting up, people started gaining interest in it. what he said was roger stone was pedaling himself as the man who had access to wikileaks, had connections inside wikileaks to get them some of this information ahead of time perhaps so they could know what was coming. that was an important part of his testimony. he said he spoke to roger stone during this period, close to it, nearly a dozen times. funny, perhaps, he called roger stone an expert in opposition. interestingly enough he did say, this is a guy who knows how to do dirty tricks, so when you're down in a campaign, this is the kind of information you would want. a key witness certainly for the government. it gives us the first and the government the first opportunity to have someone understand that was attached to the campaign to say, yeah, we were interested in what wikileaks was doing and inte

because steve bannon is a wild card.ve bannon shows up and is a hostile kind of reluctant witness, or if he shows up and gives prosecutors what we want. what we do know is that steve bannon and roger stone had all sorts of conversations during the campaign in which one of them reportedly was roger stone saying to steve bannon basically i know how to get the president to win, but it's not going to be pretty. >> what does that mean? yeah. i think this is the point at which every starts throwing each other under the bus. but i mean, roger stone has been the notable dirty trickster or whatever. this is what he prides himself on. going a little further than everybody else is willing to go on behalf of his friend donald trump. so the extent to which steve bannon is going to sort of distance himself from that by testifying against him will be interesting to see. especially now that steve bannon seems to be trying to work his way back into trumpland. he has been publicly out there defending the president. he had been on the outs

shimon what can we expect to hear from bannon?e second phase of this trial, ana, where prosecutors are now going to outline the very important and probably the most crucial point of this trial and really the most crucial point of why roger stone was charged and arrested is now the phase concerning roger stone's contacts with the trump campaign and his knowledge about wikileaks and what he was communicating to the campaign and claiming he was going to be able to get him some of the emails and information. that is where steve bannon will play a big role. he's expected to testify about emails and about communication that he had with roger stone where roger stone was claiming to have access and information concerning what wikileaks was working on and some of the emails they were going to release. specifically there was one email that roger stone said to steve bannon saying that he knew how to win. that it wasn't going to be pretty, and then steve bannon responded, let's talk asap. that is what he's going to testify. it is probably "th

so what did bannon have to say about stone during this trial?rosecution. we're now in the phase of where the prosecutors and the government start linking roger stone to the campaign, to the trump campaign and their interest in wanting this information from wikileaks. a couple of headlines here was that one thing they did establish today from steve bannon's mouth is that the campaign certainly thought that roger stone was their connection to wikileaks. that they thought that he someone who could get them information on what they were working on and that basically the campaign had no other access. but what they believed was that it was going to be roger stone who was going to help them get this information. and other key thing is steve bannon said we thought this was going to hurt hillary clinton and help donald trump. and i thought this was a very important point for prosecutors to get across. the other thing that was interesting is it is interesting to hear bannon describe roger stone, calling him a dirty trickster but did say he is a guy to hav

and clearly he has a false or misleading problem to the extent bringing it back to bannon, that bannone you have someone saying, i've had no communication with anyone in the trump campaign. last i recall, bannon was the chief strategist. that would make him a central figure in the trump campaign. and then not only to the extent that he communicated with them but assange, who's he? and of course he's given contradictory information. i'm with assange, i know assange. by the way, i'm just blustering. i never knew him. so to the extent that bannon also says that there's a relationship there, it's kind of troubling. it's what we call damning testimony. >> okay. let me ask you about "the godfather" and this interesting directive coming from the judge. i want to play a famous scene from "godfather part ii." this is one so many people out there know. this is when the government witness lies to a senate committee about michael corleone's mafia ties. he loses his ties after corleone shows up with frank's brother from italy. watch. >> i was in the olive oil business with his father, but that was

and when stone e-mailed bannon, he told bannon that trump could still win, but time was running out. and he said he knew how to win this, but, quote, it ain't pretty. roger stone knew how to win this, and he was telling that to the trump campaign ceo, but his way in his own words, quote, ain't pretty. now at the same time in august you'll hear roger stone was bragging. he was bragging publicly and bragging loudly and bragging repeatedly he was in contact with wikileaks. that he had a go' between that was telling him information about what was coming, that he had an intermediary. stone regularly updated people in the trump campaign at the senior levels about whatever information he thought he had about wikileaks. make no mistake roger stone could have easily told the truth to the intelligence committee. stone could have testified he had many e-mails and texts about wikileaks and julian assange. including the ones you see here today. he could have said he had the messages with steve bannon, about julian assange. roger stone could have told the truth that he told corsi to get to assange

steve bannon, taking the stand today in stone's federal trial, correspondent david spahn is outside the.s. district court in washington with the latest. >> steve bannon said in court that roger stone was a "axis point wikileaks" to the two men talks frequently in the campaign, he said still never brag about having access to nonpublic documents. roger stone and his entourage left the courthouse after six hours of testimony. described as "dirty tricksters on trial for lying to congress about his alleged role in the wikileaks release of hacked emails to bolster the trump campaign." vanden said on the stone would mention his relationship with julie and us on she wikileaks. said stone, implied that he could use his weekly's contacts to obtain information about hillary clinton into the campaign. spoke to cameras making it clear that he was not here by choice. >> i was forced to go to the grand jury and am forced to compelled to be here today. >> a new york radio host denying allegations for a second day in a row that he was the conduit between stone and julian assange who runs wikileaks. says

the bannon testimony was damning. that stone was the conduit to wikileaks completely undercuts his defense, stone's defense that, you know, i didn't really mean to lie and i was played by critico and i was played by coursy and then i lied for the puffery. you know, the bottom line is the fact that there was even any type of glee or any type of humor really kills me because it talks about interference in our presidential election. i think people need to realize that this is the last trial from the mueller investigation and that stone lied to the house intel committee when he said that he did not have e-mails or texts and that he did not have contact. and i think it's a really poor defense. i think it's really inadequate to say, yeah, i lie and i lied but you can trust me now because i'm telling the truth now. that never works. >> right. i mean, morgan had a great documentary, you know, "get me roger stone." i think katy is completely correct. these are men who have been blustering through their entire careers. now, the
