and i've been to see that banyan tree before. what an amazing sight. let's hope that it comes back. those trees >> are pretty tough out there tonight. we do have some good news as far as weather is concerned. of course, we've been watching dora very intense hurricane. >> one point passing south of the wine ons at about miles away. but a category 4 storm and then we had a strong ridge of high pressure to the north of the difference between those 2 that brought all those funneling winds gusting to 80 miles an hour or so across maui, of course, get a fire and that kind of situation is extremely dangerous. now, it has moved about 1500 miles away off the coastline. and that's some good news. the further moves away. less effect it has on the hawaiian island chain. still, they're seeing the trade winds kicking around out there. but look at what a change we've seen even in these last 24 hours, instead of seeing those gusts over 20 miles an hour. boy, that gusts there, 9.13, miles an hour. and that was it. so that is some good news for folks there trying to mop up some of the fires there in t

i grew up on maui my mom taught elementary which is right next to the banyan tree. o i have swung on his vines. i have been there there has been numerous people on maui and lahaina that tree is very special. i'm really hoping everybody is hoping it pulls through and can be a beacon of hope and a true survivor during our worst disaster we've ever had. jon: i look at the footage and hear the accounts of the survivor the oil thing i can sort of compare it to is pompeii and the eruption of mount vesuvius. it just came upon you so quickly. >> he mentioned 80 mile-per-hour gusts that blew the fire. we thought we were safe with it being so far south of us the national weather service in our emergency managers knew the high winds were coming. it was a possibility but we have never had a fire like this before. and it came quick. the commissions were right for it. maui is now dealing with at the worst disaster we've ever had. we've got the hurricanes, tsunamis, two lava flows in 2014 and 2018. but the images coming out of lahaina and the stories is devastating and hurting the
