what was it like to play john the baptist. tell us. how did you prepare for that role? >> oh, gosh.ad very little time to prepare, between the moment that i was announced that i had the role and the moment when we started filming, i only had about a week's time so i was quite conscious of the responsibility of playing not aa fictional character but a human being who is reveered in not just one religion. in the time i had, i sat with my mom and she schooled plea a little bit, reminded me about the story of john the baptist in the bible and the koran and i took it from there and once i arrived obviously where we were filming i had various conversations with elizabeth chung, matthew lecham to help me cap clmecapture what they wantee specific scenes. my duty was to give some truth to the scene itself. maria: oh, you captured it so beautifully, yaya, i know that you had to be studying history for so long. how much did you look at in terms of biblical research and going back and looking at the past in terms of preparation? >> yeah, i mean, i think that from my mom. in the end, john the ba

there's different baptist groups in the middle colonies. and so the middle colonies, i think it's representative of the kind of diversity that you see in modern america. there was just a lot of different kinds of religious groups. a lot of kinds of ethnicities. sometimes they don't get along with each other, they're competing for adherence, but it's kind of hard to tell the one single, linear story of the south and slavery, new england and puritanism. the middle colonies is more like that. and in new england when you get into the early 1700s, and you're talking about the 18th century, we mean the 1700s, new england sees the decline of puritanism. remember, they had been founded in massachusetts, connecticut especially, these kind of colonies were founded as puritan colonies. and puritanism by the early 1700s is in decline. now 70, 80 years past the time of the founding. and the puritan movement has started to fade away. historians e debate about just how much puritanism is really declining. some of this may just be taught because you know t
