president barack obama will speak in an hour. this is expected to be an emotional day especially those who were here 50 years ago. we spoke to one than who said that that moment changed his life forever. here's his story. >> this was the final significant step of the civil rights movement in 1956, a push for voting rights. but when marchers tried to walk across this bridge in selma alabama,... >> i was just horrified it stunned me. >> for clark olson those images changed his life. he took up dr. martin luther king's call to come to selma believing that police would not attack clergy. they took a wrong turn and came across a group of white men. >> they came at us rather hurriedly. we said to just keep causing. we saw the man swing the club and i heard the sound that have hitting jim's head. a sound that i will not forget. and then i ran. >> his friend jim reed died two days later and his death would do more to galvanize the country than the horrific i thinks of so many blacks being mercilessly beaten because he was a minister, and

i got out and i voted for president barack obama. i mean you know i did consider the fact that he was black but i voted him to do a job. and he's done exactly what i wanted him to do. e he's tried to stay away from these wars. i'm a vietnam veteran. i'm sick of hearing about wars and the trains of war. but i also am a taxpaying citizen. i worked all my life and i'm i did retired now. i didn't take one food stamp. i haven't been on welfare and all that other crap. but i voted -- i pay taxes, and i expect my congressmen and my senators to represent me. i did not see a republican congressman or senator -- i might be wrong it's not saying -- but i did not see them down there at that march, which ar was important to me. you know, at 66 years old i know what i went through for civil rights and voting rights. and i expected them to represent me. if they didn't show up to are th represent me whoey are they representing? >> you were down there at selma gu can you talk to some of those issues? i >> i d did see republicans and repub democrats.

barack obama made it clear he is open to normalizing relations with cuba. he says change is hard in our own lives and in the lives of nations, but that doesn't mean you don't take the risk. he sent from the beginning he would do the same with iran. one of his early actions in office was writing the letter reaching out to iranian leadership. now with what he sees as a more moderate leadership in iran, he says we cannot squander this chance. this is been his ideology all along. republican saying he is being reckless with national security and the u.s. will pay the consequences of a bad deal. anchor: thanks for that. before switzerland, secretary of state john kerry weighed in on the situation in syria, a country that has now entered its fifth year of war. speaking sunday, the secretary of state said washington would have to negotiate with syrian president bashar al-assad. that seems to be a turnaround after the u.s. insisting for years his days were numbered. john kerry: we are working hard with other interested parties to see if we can reignite a diplomatic
