back in 2008 i was one of the first people to endorse barack obama and as a result not because i was any good at going out and speaking are campaigning for him. everybody was on hillary clinton's side but i had the opportunity to be out there six, seven, eight or nine different states to campaign with him. we kept making the argument to david axelrod, and others you can win indiana. you can win this state and they would say initially no, you can't. they haven't voted for a democrat since 1964. he thinks there's a message that people be receptive to hear so finally they were able to convince the candidate and his advisers to spend time in indiana and he did a couple of things. number one he showed up. my parents always say show up. you've got to show up at work hard. he ended up winning indiana. secondly there were people who were angry and he would tell us afterward sometimes hey why did you do that? it was not fun getting screamed at and he said you've got to listen to allow that these folks that have a legitimate story about displacement and interruptions and alienation in america.
