can you talk a bit about how that led to barbara bush hiring you to work on her staff? >> well, it is sort of an interesting road to the white house and to the bushes life. i was a newspaper reporter at "usa today" in 1988, the 1980 election, and barbara bush and kitty dukakis both agreed to write a weekly column for "usa today." it was called their campaign diary. i think it ran every monday morning, and i was there at a dirt. what is given that assignment i was sort of grumpy about it. i did want to be the editor, but ended up being a lot of fun. i got to know both of those amazing women really well, and after the election i was very surprised when mrs. bush chief of staff susan porter offered a job in the first ladies press office. take the couple weeks to think about it. i love being a reporter and that it was my dad, a farmer in missouri, , who said what is wrg with you? you have been offered a job by the incoming first lady of the united states and you are still thinking about it? he was right and i suggest, and and the rest is history. and i quickly followed him t
