. >> barbara collins joins us, she participated in a number of the strikes, including the one brought about the nlrb complaints. barbara what did the company say you did? >> i got fired for anew call no show, for june 1, 2 and 3, for they knew i was out on strike. >> you called in sick or what did you say? >> i faxed over the information not only to the store but also to home office. and my management didn't respond to me calling in. >> how much money were you making at walmart? >> $11.05 an hour. >> how does that do for you single mom? >> single mom i just learned to survive. that's what exactly all the workers are doing, just surviving. >> at $11 an hour i'm asking you know is that something that you can live on?úis this really a cr you to make it on $11 an hour? >> it really is a challenge. because even though i was full time, it wasn't -- i wasn't getting 40 hours a week. i was getting retaliated against by being a member of the organization. so my hours got cut down to eight hours one week, 16 for another. and yeah it's a challenge and a struggle and you just not only learn how t

collins. mrs. davis. mrs. boone. deeds, olph record of mayor perkins of maywood, illinois. ms. barbara miner, ms. gus cunningham and countless other women who have provided leadership and have been actively involved in the struggle for self-direction, community improvement and self-determination. erlene went to city hall, the state house and the white house. through her interactions, she walked with kings and queens but never lost the common touch. erlene's two main issues were health care and education. she was a founding member of the mile square health center and the national association of community health centers. i remember meeting we were having at the university of illinois school of public health and its people introduced themselves, they'd always be introduced as doctor or they'd say john smith, m.s.w., or joy jones, fach. when it came erlene's time she said, i'm mrs. erlene lindsey, csta. there were a group of medical students present. one of them raised their hand and said, could i ask mrs. lindsey a question? erlene said, gladly. she said, can you tell me what your degree stands for?

we have barbara boxer working with somewhat surprising, senator vitter to get to build on and before that sent him off to get the transportation bill done. we have susan collinsleading the way on those reform, a number of us work together on the violence against women act that passed the house, and we work very hard to develop leaders in the senate. i don't exactly the timing. there's kind of a lineup in the senate. [laughter] but i think that there are women right now in very important leadership roles. that is including barbara mikulski who are de facto leader of the women in the senate to one of my best moments was when she gathered the women in the senate, she gathered before a vote and she stood up, she is quite short, on a couch and felt like i'm back in the 1970s. she said, get out there, square your shoulders, suit up, put her lipstick on and get ready for the revolution last night and -- [laughter] so there's a lot of expense of the women in the senate that is passed on and we really do stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. >> we want to close with a question to all of you. a lot of this series has been about women empowerment and being
