and then here in manhattan beach where i am, los angeles county and santa barbara county and ventura unty, waves of 10 to 15 feet. ventura county was the hardest hilt. that's where we saw those dramatic videos of these monster waves and people running from the ocean. unfortunately, in ventura county, at least eight people were taken to the hospital because of this. that's where we saw some of the road closures and some of the evacuations. authorities saying there is still the risk of flooding, especially in those areas that normally flood in the lower areas. so again, people being told to be extreme ly careful, to never turn their back to the ocean. i'm doing that now, but i have a team ready to tell me in case we need to make a run for it. hopefully that is not the case. again, authorities telling people to continue to be very careful, and a lot of the closures you're going to see through sunday. >>> many travelers in the u.s. are flying to new locations to celebrate the new year, while others are headed back home after the christmas holidays. it adds up to a hectic time in airports

here in los angeles county and santa barbara county and ventura county, the national weather serviced likely see waves between 15 and 20 feet in the center coast. all of a sudden, you never really know how tall these waves are going to be and how severe it's going to get. ventura county is where we saw a lot of people being caught off guard. at least eight people were taken to the hospital in ventura county. that's where you saw a lot of road closures and evacuations. there is also the potential for flooding up and down the california coast. authorities saying the lower areas are still in danger of flooding. it's really through the whole day that people need to be careful, not turn their back to the ocean. i know i'm doing it in some cases, but i do have a team here letting me know if the waves come closer. again, if you don't have to be here, people are being told don't come. again, it's beautiful, but it can be dangerous, because they could get higher and it could be deadly for some people. thankfully, the surfers have listened. in this area, we have not seen any surfers, just a lo

the holiday season is a busy time of year for a monarch butterfly grove in santa barbara county.sitors to the ellwood main butterfly grove call it a magical experience. it's the largest winter migration site in southern california of monarchs. more than 15,000 butterflies are now there. one of the grove's largest population ever to witness this natural phenomena on and what we just witnessed a few minutes ago, where a whole cluster of burst, they all took flight at the same time. >> it's sometimes there's no words. it's amazing thing. >> monarch butterflies migrate to this area from october through february. well, as soon as today, the 49ers could rule out defensive lineman eric armstead for sunday's game against the seattle seahawks. armstead is dealing with foot and knee issues he has not practiced this week. it's a big loss for the niners defense, which recorded 18 sacks in just the past month, including six on thanksgiving against the seahawks quarterback brock purdy expects a much tougher challenge this time from one of the niners main division rivals. >> it's not like, oh,

and so it is just unloading on santa barbara county, oxnard, ventura, la, lompoc, those areas gettingnificant rainfall. and again, us to the north, nothing to the south, everything. and this thing is just loading. and, you know, remember how slow it was. we've only loop on this thing. remember how slow it was moving. look at those training cells moving into the santa barbara area, into ventura, malibu, manhattan beach, now into southern california, into laguna beach. so it's heavy, heavy rain down there. and they do not do well with rainfall. with heavy rainfall. they just don't they don't have the river set up. have you ever been to la? have you ever seen the la river? you see the movie grease, right? with the concrete. that was the la river. it's just a big trench, right? that's all. that's. they have areas that drain, but that's kind of their big go to. and when you get three inches of rain in an area like that off the urban concrete, you're going to have massive water flows. and so that's one of the concerns is those rains move in. now forecast lows tonight cool. but not freezing.

goes through the weekend and then we actually have a red flag warning that is in parts of santa barbara county let's focus in on that. that is just east of santa barbara's. you can see as it goes up into the hills and the mountains that starts at 3 o'clock today goes through 06:00am on saturday night. as i mentioned, the rest of the area is going to be in this right through the weekend before they start to get some relief that the reason this is happening is of the reason we're getting some of these blue skies. high pressure is moving in. it's setting up a wind gradient with low pressure and driving offshore wind. we do have that feels we've been through that. so that's what they're seeing right now. future wind gusts kind of show you as you look at santa maria, if you look at santa barbara where this wind really starts going as it gets into the overnight and then into saturday, as i mentioned, they're really under these watches at least until sunday. you can see that wind starts to kind of travel a little farther to the south before. finally gives up a little bit. in addition, by the way, the

parts of ventura and santa barbara counties picking up 6 to 8in of rain. old man mountain, 8.53 down south so you can see why the flooding is a big concern down there and why watches and warnings are up. they are getting still some heavy rain. as you will notice, it's the same area of low pressure that is spinning up the moisture that brought us the stormy weather yesterday. it's all quiet here locally right now, but we do have a few showers showing up right between monterey and big sur right now. coastal flood advisory until 10 a.m. tomorrow. so astronomical high tides once again leading to flooding concerns this one will be coming in at around 6.7 to 7.0 feet, seven feet, i should just say clear of 7:00 or so right before that. so be aware of that in case you're going to be out and about. there might be some minor flooding along the coast 61 degrees right now in the city. it is in the upper 50s from oakland to hayward, 60 in san jose, 59, in half moon bay. look at this beautiful shot from our san jose camera. lots of sunshine there with some clouds. 64 i

they've seen some serious flooding places like ventura county, santa barbara. some heavy rainfall moving in that direction. some of the mountain tops there are over 7, even 8 and a half inches of rain and more to come traveling down that direction. pretty dangerous. might want to take 5 and set a one on to avoid some of that activity. strong storms continue to plow through that area for tonight. this is all part of the same storm that moved through the bay area. but that area of low pressure now has made its way just off the coastline of southern california. spin up trouble for them and will likely do so for another day. we are clearing things out. here's a look at your latest radar. what a change from just a day ago as we've got some dry conditions all around the bay area. something to watch out for overnight tonight. maybe a couple of patches of valley fog developing out there as we head through the night into early tomorrow morning. that could be some of the to leave fog temperatures right now. generally in the 50's all around the bay area. but if you're ste
