next i would like to introduce barbara garcia from the department of public health and a natural leader health, both our department and director garcia. >> thank you. thank you, mr. lee, mayor lee and supervisor sheehy. the department of public health is responsible for consumer and food safety in the city. so this hard finance really supports our ability to protect the food that people eat. the right to know if your food has antibiotics is really part of an essential consumer right. overuse of antibiotics we know causes emto stay in the hospital longer. it also impacts their ability to heal from diseases. so our ability to really manage the amount of antibiotics that people use really helps them. there are many medications that they can't use because of that and they have to have the ability to heal and get better from the diseases. so what is in our food, they're food is a protection we can provide to the people of the city of san francisco. i want to thank our director, deborah rafael who is not here today. she's been one of the leaders in san francisco with this, so i want to thank

i want to thank the leadership from the department of public health with barbara garcia and others folks in the department who have taken the lead and thank you for that. i encourage the health department and city and county of san francisco to be bold on this. we know what works and saves lives and it's a supervised consumption services. in canada, for example, they've gone from one to over 25 this year and they've done that because they had a change in their federal government and a change of approach and change of political will and it's become essentially non-controversial there and i look forward to when that happens here. i think it is incumbent on san francisco to lead the way. you heard earlier we don't have the overdose and opioid crisis they do in other parts of the country but that's a matter of time and a matter of fentanyl making its way to the drug supply as it has in other parts of the country. we need to step up and provide these services and increase access to treatment before it's too late rather than after. from the drug policy alliance perspective, we're delighted to

i'm barbara garcia, director of health. we have mayor london breed and supervisor jane kim. we're so happy to be here today, we're opening a new part of the respite providing services for those who need that kind of support from our shelter system. this respite has been open for over 10 years and providing over 45 beds for those needing support around alcoholism and around another 30 beds for those coming out of hospital who need additional support. these are focused on the shelter system to ensure that those individuals who need more medical support and i want to acknowledge supervisor kim who has been a champion for the expansion, particularly when she spent time in the shelter and saw that many individuals needed additional medical support. this took about two years to open with the renovation and with the staffing and we're so happy today to be with you to open these new beds, as well as the fact that the staff is there already, we have served over 3,000 homeless individuals in the past 10 years providing the upmost care for these individuals who really need support and
