congresswoman barbara lee was here this morning to talk about neufeld funds to keep it that deep and keep the port competitive, especially in an economy that keeps sputtering along. spokesperson for the port reminded, as you said, that it creates 70,000 jobs for the region. mayor jean kwon out here as well. congresswoman lee is talking about $18 million in federal funding for the port, which helps it reach a milestone at $350 million. what happens is that port customers pay a tax for harbor improvements, but apparently getting that money flowing isn't all that easy. but it is critical to the flow of commerce, especially in tough times. >> ports all over the country right now are feeling a challenge in terms of their business because of the volatility in the global economy and then also just the challenges we have here at home. definitely, we're feeling the pinch, but we're trying to promote exports as much as possible and trying to take advantage of every opportunity to grow our business. so, these funds that we get to keep the harbor deeper are so important for keeping jobs here and

speaker, i just want to make a brief remark about one of the preceding speakers, congressman barbara lee, from oakland, california, who has been an advocate for poverty and food insecurity and human rights and all of the global issues that we have talked about over the years and i want to thank her for her leadership on this very important issue. congresswoman lee is the founder of the out-of-poverty caucus here in the house of representatives and i'm honored to serve as one of her co-chairs. but the congresswoman is absolutely correct. on this sunday, october 16, we will celebrate world food day, a day to increase awareness, understanding and information and inform year-round action to alleviate hunger across the globe in our neighborhoods. the statistical evidence of pervasive and persistent hunger is absolutely staggering. notwithstanding the human stories of working families and in my communities in eastern north carolina or families in eastern africa who cannot get enough food to eat on a daily basis. and so i want to take this opportunity to remind all the members of this body that

on thursday, i will join my colleague, representative barbara lee, and catholic charities u.s.a. and the jewish council for public affairs, the national council of churches and several other congresspeople that my colleague mentioned to participate in the food stamp challenge, an effort to draw attention to the crisis of hunger in america. as part of the challenge, participants will eat on the average snap allotment. that's what we call it now. there's no more food stamps. now people get a card that they can actually use to charge the food. but will eat on the average snap allotment of $1.50 per meal for a week. having participated in this event in the past, i know it is extremely difficult to eat a healthy diet under such strict budgetary guidelines. nevertheless, snap is the difference between chronic hunger and a basic meal for 45 million americans. now, obviously that means i'm going to give up any starbucks coffee but even the dollar coffee i was able to buy in the cloakroom just before i came out here is something that will be just too precious to spend, that's almost a who

barbara boxer. i would also like to thank and acknowledge our mayor, mayor ed lee, who is here with us today. since mayor lee's early days in city hall, he has been a strong supporter of the transbay project and everything that the transbay represents. housing, improve air quality, the alleviation of congestion, and a better quality of life for all bay area san franciscans. i would also like to add that since coming into office, we have created over 1000 jobs for this project. so, thank you, mr. lee. in addition, i want to thank our border directors. jane kim is here today. you will be hearing from her. i do not know if mayer brown is here, but it is important to it knowledge him. after all, he started the project many years ago. you will be hearing more about that in a moment. it will include thousands of new residential units, parks, open space, shops, retail, restaurant, and so forth. you will be hearing a lot about that from the mayor and jane. in addition, the men and women working on our construction site. you can see some of them here today. they are very dedicated and have been workin

[applause] mayor lee: thank you, everybody, for coming this morning, and dr. buchbinder and barbara and the commissioners, congratulations. these days it is so difficult to land federal grants, so matter where they're from and it only takes the dedication that you've identified, the people who worked on this very hard to put together a grant specific to modernize our aids research office and it's absolutely needed. i remember in the early 1980's where we joined three major cities of the country, this city and new york and los angeles, where the initial aids research got started and we are concentrated in our areas but we understood that this epidemic had to be studied further to make sure we were on the right track to discover not only breakthroughs but prevention ideas that would be directed at curtailing this epidemic. so you fast forward the 25, 30 years since that time, and we need more of that research done so i am glad this money was identified. it's going to be very helpful. the $9.5 million of aid from the national institute of health. this is almost miraculous. you don't se
