we're back with al sharpton and barbara lee. joining us now, danny shechter.s the author of "madiba: a to z." you were actively involved in the struggle against apartheid. can you talk a little bit about the nature of the apartheid government. i think it seems remote. people don't quite realize what a comprehensively awful regime this was. >> see, a lot of americans compared south africa to the u.s. and thought in terms -- >> jim crow. >> the civil rights movement, where people's rights were being violated. in south africa, there was no constitution and there were no rights. so apartheid was really a labor system, a way of controlling black workers to the benefit of the people who owned the mine and the resources of that country. and so the whole system regulated people's lives, almost in every dimension, where they could live, where they could work, and they couldn't violate those rules. they couldn't be in the city after dark. they couldn't, you know, work in certain areas. it was a tightly regulated, really a fascist, to use a word that we don't use much an

we spoke to congresswoman barbara lee. in the '70s they were out here demonstrating, boycotting and one of them went to jail as they fought against apartheid in south africa. it was a hug shared between two men who'd become friends even before they met. ron dellums, then-representative for the east bay pushed congress to impose sanctions against south africa for its apartheid practices. in 1990, in front of a crowd of almost 60,000 people, the oakland native got to meet the newly freed nelson mandela. also there that day, oakland deputy mayor, swanson, who explained why mandela chose the east bay city. >> oakland because the long shoremen refused to off load south african ships because there were demonstrations by students at the time like myself that were protesting apartheid in south africa. >> reporter: swanson and congresswoman barbara lee were part of the hosting committee that greeted mandela when he arrived in oakland, a city that's since named a street after him, mandela parkway. they both say mandela considered th

we know he was a -- my good friend barbara lee and i joined in to press the administration and take hisow he had a more than rough river to travel and mountains to climb. we give these accolades now so that the wholeness of his person can be evidenced by the fact that he rose above all of that. what i would say is there were so many on the wrong side of history, however, as the former president of south africa, it took a man like nelson mandela to reach out to those on the wrong side of history and cast him aside and rendered him in essence incarcerated and enslaved for 27 years actually. and in a prison because he had been a rebel. he had used weapons. he came to the point of saying there would be no change without violence. but it took him to come out and to extend his hand and to get those on the wrong side of history to be as if they had never stood in those shoes and be a brother to him and get south after cannericans and he boxer and did a lot of rugby. i want to say, when i man can say i don't want black dominance or white dominance, i want freedom and democracy and people to liv

i am calling from barbara lee's congressional district and i was lucky enough to see you speak in may and love the book. my question is for you is given things like rand paul and the drone issues and the hearings and then people visiting for the congress people. do you think events are a shift in the drone strikes or are they drops in the buckets. >> i felt embarrassed as an american when he had the pakistan and yemen family members of drone strike victims and only a handful of congressmen showed up. he is an incredible man and is on a panel with academics and was asked almost no questions. i don't think it represents a shift. i think congressman grace credit and congressman myers and lee has been-spoken on this. you raise rand paul and this is fascinating thing that has happened. rand paul did something i think congressional democrats should have done and that is to shutdown the congress and say let's take a stock of how far we have gone. we have a president who won the noble prize and saying he has the right to assassinate a united states citizen. rand paul is against everything i a

that's why democrat colleagues, representative levin, representative van hollen, veptive barbara lee, introduced a rule in the rules committee to extend unemployment insurance for an additional three months. just three months. this bill was paid for, i want to make that perfectly clear, would not have cost an extra dime. inexcuseably, the majority rejected my colleagues' amendment despite inserting language to fix medicare payments to doctors over the coming year, which is certainly important. fixing medicare payments to doctors is a worthy and important goal but it is certainly troubling and should be to all of thause we are unwilling at the same time to ignore the needs of the unemployed. the majority's refusal to extend a helping hand to jobless americans stands in stark contrast to the defense of tax loopholes for big corporations and powerful special interests. for far too long our nation allowed wealthy individuals and powerful corporations to hide billions of dollars in offshore bank accounts and create tax loopholes instead of paying their fair share. indeed, some corporations
