we want to welcome to our table congresswoman barbara lee. thank you for being here. we talked about the 50th ofiversary of johnson's that president lyndon johnson's war on poverty. -- 50th anniversary of president lyndon johnson's war on poverty. the supplemental poverty rate in 1967 was 20%. if you look at why it has to do ,ith a lot of the tax credits the food stamp program, medicaid, medicare, all of those great societies that provide us opportunities for people. we are a long way to go because we squeeze all of these initiatives and policies. primarily the tea party republican congress creating the job opportunities of people who are living or want ,o be lifted from the poverty they had those opportunities to get job training and jobs. what are the democrats solution? need to immediately extend unemployment, taxation. when you look at the fact that 11 million people have been killed -- have been kept from the ranks of the poor just by the emergency unemployment policy and programs, this is extremely important not only for those people to not fall into the ranks o

i want to begin where we began with congresswoman barbara lee.arking the 50th anniversary on the war on poverty. is it working e -- working? is hard to say it is working. there are admirable war -- goals , but ending poverty completely, that has not happened. as congress mentioned, the solutions here are about more than just money. if that solve the problem, billions of dollars have been spent and the problem is not solved. that is not to say we can abandon these principles, either. i think it is important we remain a country where everyone has an opportunity. i am a little bit concerned about the concept of income inequality. i am more focused on the concept of wage stagnation. the real problem for most americans is that the purchasing power in the middle class is far less today than 10 years ago and that is a reality. i was on the house floor and heard one of my colleagues give a speech where they got to the rousing conclusion of their speech and said, the income equality -- inequality in america is larger than the income inequality in nigeria.

today we commemorate the 50th year of the war on poverty, and i thank my good friend, congresswoman barbara lee, who will be holding a commemoration in recognition of lyndon baines johnson, the president who declared the war on poverty, but also the many workers and many presidents since who in many aspects helped to build on the nation's safety net. oday, however, we find ourselves in a dilemma, not recognizing and accepting success where it is. poverty has fallen significantly over the last half century. since the mid 1960's, the average income among the oorest fifth of americans have lowered, malnutrition has largely disappeared but it still exists. in parts of my 18th congressional district in texas, we have very high mortality rates. it means that our job is not over. nearly 50 million americans, however, were poor in 2012, including 13 million children, 60 million people live below half of the poverty line and large racial disparities in the african-american community were clear and documented. and african-americans have a lower college degree graduate level than white americans. and so t

on the democratic side congressman barbara lee plans to launch a series of 50 speeches in 50 days tots. president johnson's war on poverty was part of his bid. between 1964 and '65 he passed the economic opportunity act to create jobs. programs made -- that became permanent like the food stamp program. and he established medicare and medicaid. he also passed education legislation that launched head start, spent billions to help clean up slums and lift people out of poverty. in the short term it did work. the official poverty rate fell from 19% in 1964 down to about 11% just ten years later. but support for social programs declined in the '70s and '80s due to economic insecurity and criticism over government assistance in general. in 1987 president reagan famously said the war on poverty was over. and that poverty had won. by the '90s the focus shifted away from the root causes of poverty and instead turned to reducing welfare dependence. >> we have to end welfare as a way of life and make it a path to independence. lee, home of the bridge, a democrat named mark sokolich had recently refused to support christie in his re-election campaign against democratic state senator barbaraded to questions about a possible political vendetta by mocking reporters. >> i actually was the guy working the cones out there. you really are not serious with that question. >> but then yesterday, a bombshell. the release of a wae of e-mails and texts in august shortly after the mayor refused to support christie, the governor's deputy chief of staff, bridgette kelly sent a note to a transportation official named david wildstein saying, time for traffic problems in ft. lee. he responded got it. a month later, the lanes were closed. frank sokolich called somebody in wildstein's office regarding a urgent matter of public importance. did you call him back? radio silence. is it wrong that i'm smiling wrote one unidentified staffer. i feel badly about the kids, i guess, relied in another. to which david wildstein responded, they're the children of buono voter. and so today in response, the governor came out and held what may have been one of the longest and most bizarre press conferences

that they were going to retaliate against the mayor of fort lee, new jersey, a democratic mayor for not endorsing the republican governor, as barbara can tell us, too many democrats got in line with this republican governor's reelection. they were going to punish new jersey driver's cars who use the bridge who come from all over new jersey, including people who come from pennsylvania and people who were driving from all over -- i mean, it's this -- the idea that you could punish an individual politician in new jersey, local politician by slowing do you think the george washington bridge is insane. but that's what got us here. >> right. and, you know, there's so many damning revelations from the set of documents this morning that it's really hard to settle on just one. but one quote that i find really interesting is, you know, this all ended when one of governor cuomo's appointees on the port authority became aware of the situation. and in an e-mail to one of christie's top aides, the guy who ordered these closures said new york just gave them their lanes back. we're going to go, quote, appropriately nuts. so i love this idea in jer
