let's bring in former attorney general barbara mcquade. we are hearing the attorney general has been briefed on the situation. how might they be monitoring this? >> the federal government will be very interested in this case, even if it might ultimately end up as a steak or prosecution. homicides are typically state court prosecutions unless there is a federal statute that would be violated if this turned out to be a hate crime, for example, that could be a potential civil rights crime that would allow the federal government be involved. even if there is an alternate state court prosecution federal authorities can bring resources that most local communities lack. for example, in a mass shooting one of the things that the fbi will do is to develop a whole rendering -- a 3d model of the crime scene. to be able to do that they need to secure the scene immediately so they can photograph it from every angle. that can be immensely helpful at trial in terms of determining how things played out. how it happened how the shooter killed these people.
