our pentagon correspondent barbara starr was among them. why they decided to reveal these videos, no audio, images only. >> if you're just joining us or if you're seeing them, i've seen them a number of times, they're watched in fascination. these were taken inside the compound in abbottabad. that's osama bin laden with a knit cap basically channel-surfing, mostly seen looking at pictures from himself. the cia and analysts are poring over them right now. what do you make of the images? >> it's surprising that we would see video of a sweet old man watching himself. it started with his cnn interview that he gave to cnn backes in 1997, which was carefully orchestrated in that he was reluck tant to film him. they wanted to control the interview in that sense and of course not much you can do about that when you're surrounded by a group of heavily armed men. i've interviewed reports from al jazeera that when they went to him, his son was married to one of the leaders of al qaeda, one of the leaders of al qaeda's daughters was married to one of t

our pentagon correspondent barbara starr was at the off-camera briefing with intelligence officials about two hours or so ago. she joins us live. now, barbara, this is a tiny fraction, is it not, of the intelligence that was gathered overall at this compound, everything from dvds, videos, thumb drives, and this is just a tiny slice of it, right? >> that's right, fred and john. this was distributed to the news media today by the obama administration. very small fraction, we're told, of the intelligence haul. they're describing it as the largest cache of intelligence they've gotten from a senior terrorist figure ever. they're going through it. handwritten documents, videos, dvds, thumb drive, all of it to get any clues thatthy can. the videos they've distributed are very much a product of what the u.s. government has decided to show the world. let's be very clear about that. there is no audio of them. that's been stripped off. they said they don't want to be in the business of distributing osama bin laden's message. four of the videos show osama bin laden with his beard and facial hair dyed

and new information that barbara starr gathered just moments ago. barbara, you just mentioned on "american morning" that this was a kill mission. does that mean that the u.s. government didn't want to capture osama bin laden alive? >> i think it's fair to say they had no interest in capturing him alive, carol. a u.s. official telling us a short time ago, directly, this was, quote, a kill operation. that was the mission for the special forces going in by helicopter. 40 minutes on the ground. when you look at those pictures, u.s. troops had no interest in a fair firefight. they were there to do their job, kill osama bin laden, and get out. once he started resisting, there was no question about it, killed by a gunshot to the head. they are very certain it was u.s. troops that killed him. there was no suicide, no from his own people. it was u.s. troops. they know this, because we now know there was secure radio communications between the team on the ground and u.s. government officials. the cia director leon panetta essentially was leading the operation

barbara starr is here with us. hello to you.the loop. does that mean, however, that he was actually -- had a hand in planning a possible attack later? he was just aware of what was happening. >> you know, t.j., they are struggling to get documents and journals and everything that the s.e.a.l.s got in that compound. a u.s. official says, yes, there is now documentation, if you will, from the compound that bin laden was communicated with the affiliate group al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. basically, al qaeda in yemen. a very dangerous group. the question is, how effective were his communications? >> barbara, can you hang tight? i want to go to the secretary of state speaking. >> pakistani leaders, including president zardari, army chief of starm, general keoni, special representative mark grossman will be in pakistan later to continue more detailed conversations and obviously there are important concerns and many questions that have to be addressed and worked through. but i would just remind us all that in recent years our coop

let's bring in our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr. nato does not deny the actual strike.ll in dispute whether those deaths of gadhafi's family members actually happened. >> you know, still, fred, even with this video now showing draped bodies, nato officials, obama administration officials say they have not seen specific evidence that it is the son of moammar gadhafi and the grandchildren. you know, that said, nato did announce that it struck a target in tripoli last night, that they are very aware of the reports that there were civilian casualties there. they say this was not just a house. when you look at the aftermath of the strike you see that this was a building that was heavily reinforced. there was a crater indicating a bunker underneath the building. and it is nato's contention that this was a command and control facility. that said, of course, a lot of the command and control facilities in tripoli are used by the gadhafi family as well as by the u.s. military. so the question may at the end of the day be, perhaps, if there was some dual use here, family and milit

barbara starr is getting more details for us. what else are you learning for us, barbara? >> a u.s. official very familiar with all of the documentation taken from the compound now tells us that there is an indication in there, in these documents, that bin laden was communicating with al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. al qaeda in yemen. of course, now it's viewed as one of the most dangerous al qaeda affiliate groups lead by that american-born clear rick. no word yet on whether bin laden and ma lack key were in communication. we don't know that. but very disconcerting to know that bin laden was in a communication with that group. >>> as for these other plots, it turns out that u.s. officials suspected late last year when they usualed a travel alert for americans in europe to be careful traveling in europe to be careful. they suspected bin laden might be behind it all but tell us now that in looking at documents taken from the compound, there is a additional proof that bin laden was spurring on a plot late last year to attack americans traveling in europe. that he was in the loop on

barbara starr is at the pentagon with a closer look at the special opes mission and you have new details this morning. tell us. >> reporter: first, we want to start off by showing everybody a photograph. this was the u.s. helicopter left behind by the americans basically hanging on a fence wrecked. it suffered mechanical failure. all the commandos were able to get on another helicopter and leave. 40-minute raid, surgical strike. enormously successful that the mafrns got in and out without being detected. satellite photos show how complex that site was, quite large and significant compared to other compounds in the area. then, we are going to put up and show you a schematic drawing of it. you can begin to see what they had to move through, 18-foot security walls. they went clearing it room by room and eventually got to this second entered floor of this center building that you see there behind another seven-foot wall. that's where they found osama bin laden. that's where he had been hiding out. the fire fight ensued. he was killed by a shot to the head and a shot to the chest, we are told

pentagon correspondent, barbara starr, has more of it. tell us about the sound or lack there of this helicopter makes. it is amazing. >> the problem is, we really don't know all that much, do we? people are referring to this as a stealth black hawk. aviation buffs are looking at it saying, what is this thing? it appears that it is some kind of helicopter made for special operations, special forces going on these assault missions. we have never seen anything like it before. aviation buffs who have looked at it, the thinking is that it has some sound shielding qualities on it. it has low observable qualities as they call it. that means perhaps it wouldn't be that visible in a radar crossing as they were coming into pakistan, trying to come in very stealth thiy when they wout be noticed. when you talk about stealth, there are two things involved, low radar cross section and low noise. those are the two biggies. this helicopter may have been optimized for that. it is the one that is left behind. when the s.e.a.l.s approached the compound, thi

our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr, has details on what they'll be doing. g, carol. nearly 150 national guard troops from missouri now on duty in the ravaged area, and officials are telling us that number could grow in the coming hours. their number-one job right now as the governor just indicated is search and rescue. they do believe there are people out there to be rescued, and they are part of the group going house to house looking for -- wreckage to wreckage looking for anybody that they can rescue, they are also helping provide communications, we are told, because so many basic services are down in the area. we asked about the possibility of a field hospital not right now -- overnight they evacuated the two hospital in the alaska, sent patients to other nearlyby hospitals. and there are -- nearby hospitals. there are triage units set up, they don't think they need more help now. if they find a large number of survivors that could change. i think one of the questions people always ask with the national guard deployed to the war zone, are there enough bac

. >>> barbara starr has more details about this operation. >> reporter: indeed, drew.ounds briefing with the news media here to explain what more they could. and very interesting they had some images to show us. let's put up first a satellite image of the compound. a number of satellite images showed increased building in the area and showing the compound growing and added security this. now, second, after you see these satellite images, there is a drawing halves distrthat was di the compound himself. let's leave it up so we can walk people through what transpired when the helicopters got there. according to officials osama bin laden was living in that center building, a tall building living on the second and third floor area. now, i don't know if you can see, but you see what lookses like a red stripe, but actually that's a representation of a seven foot security wall it that was around that upper floor of the building and the compound already had 18 ca-foot walls. so this was a very secure area. that's where bin laden was. when the u.s. troops landed there, the navy
