let's bring in barbara starr at the pentagon. barbara, the d.i.a. a different take than the president. >> you bet they do. you'll remember mr. trump said before the summit before he sat down with kim that he would know within a minute if kim jong-un was serious about all of this. well, not so fast. the d.i.a., the military intelligence agency says their latest assessment is kim won't give up his nuclear weapons and instead for now will try and hide what he has. and that is absolutely critical. if he can hide missiles, if he can hide warheads, if he can hide his ability to make nuclear fuel, this makes it very difficult for the u.s. under any circumstances to know what's going on inside north korea. they think he's likely to sign some sort of document, to sit and talk to the u.s. as long as possible. you know, why wouldn't he? he can string it out for months. but to actually give up his nukes, to let inspectors in, to verify what is there. to make an honest and candid declaration of what he has, the pentagon is skeptical about all of that right now.

joining us live from brussels, barbara starr. what is president trump getting at when he calls germany a captive of russia? any truth in it? >> reporter: well, his contention is that this oil and gas deal germany has with russians for energy supplies is making them beholden to the russian government at a time when the u.s. has tens of thousands of troops in europe and germany as well and the u.s. is paying a considerable amount for european defense issues. but the germans will tell you this is a deal that's been in the works for some time, that it is a business deal, that it has nothing to do with security issues. so you have this dilemma, this contradiction, you have a very verbally upset president of the united states at nato. he wants countries right now to fulfill this decades long promise they made that by 2024 they will spend 2% of the economy on defense spending. many nato members are not up to that level yet. the u.s. is above it. he wants to see it done immediately. whether he can do that through his own sheer force of w

cnn's barbara starr is live at the pentagon with more. what does that mean, barbara? >> reporter: well, good morning, allison. what we are learning is north korea wants the u.s. to agree to a full peace treaty, to end the war in korea. and to lift sanctions. but sanctions, according to the administration, will only be lifted when north korea engages in full and irreversible denuclearization. and so far, that is not happening. president trump learning what his military advisers already know, nothing moves fast with north korea, and kim jong-un remains very unpredictable and on his own agenda. he has solidified his alliance with both russia and china, so is he in any big rush now to denuclearize? can he keep his economy going without full, immediate denuclearization? those are some of the key questions right now. what u.s. intelligence knows is that he has not yet engaged in any critical denuclearization activities. they are warning diplomacy will take a long time, and one of the big concerns, president trump optimistic, because north korea hasn't engaged in any missile

let's get to pentagon correspondent barbara starr. what does this intelligence show here?this is the intelligence agency that gets information from allies, satellite imagery, electronic intercepts, those who work on behalf of the united states. this is a come pend yum of everything that they know about north korea right now. what they have found is this this intelligence those shows them they believe north korea is not going to engage in full public disclosure of full nuclear denuclearization at least any time soon that kim jong-un has made a decision the hold on to what he has to some extent and hide aid away. missiles, war heads, nuclear fuel capability. there is satellite imagery out there that does show activity at several plants and locations. even that's not really what dia is so concerned about. what a satellite can see, kim knows it can see. that's not as worrisome to them right now as what it is that they don't know. that's the big concern. they think kim is determined to still hide things, determined that that will be his safety net against the united states. jim

cnn's barbara starr is joining us on the telephone. what more do you have?that following the conclusion of the talks that wrapped up a few hours ago, there is now a time line that the remains are expected now to be transferred back to the u.s. within the next 14 to 21 days, two the three weeks, and still subject to change, because this is north korea and no one can be sure, but that is what we are now hearing that the agreement is 14 to 21 days. this is of course extremely important for humanitarian reasons. the north koreans say they have 200 sets of remains of americans who were killed in the war in the korean war. the u.s. wants to get those reman remains back, and it could take years of of course to fully test them to see exactly what is there and who they can possibly identi identify. but it is also politically important for president trump, because it is the first deliverable if you will from the singapore summit. it was first agreed to at the singapore summit and it was supposed to happen, and it never did, and the president kept talking about it, and
