barbara starr broke this story and joins us live with more. what did you learn, barbara?rter: good morning, alisyn. 500 u.s. troops headed to a location called the prince saltan air base east of the capital of riyadh. this is part of the military deterrence effort against the region. but putting u.s. troops into saudi arabia, always sensitive and controversial. what they are doing at this air base is they are trying to make some runaway improvements so they can fly u.s. advanced fighter jets out of there, patrol the area for any iranian aggression, put a patriot missile battery in there to protect the air base against possible iranian attack. it puts the u.s. troops, however, in the position of appearing to also defend the kingdom. and that is what is so sensitive. the saudi government not acknowledging any of this. they don't like to talk about their needs to have u.s. troops in their kingdom. sensitive with their own people. and coming of course at an extremely sensitive time. the murder of the journal iist jamal khashoggi still very sensitive and congress very concerne

let's go straight to pentagon correspondent barbara starr. tell us what you're learning about the oil tankers that were seized just 30 minutes apart. >> reporter: a very unsettling day in the persian gulf region, brianna. officials directly familiar with the event said they were seized 30 minutes apart and it is an indication iran had planned this, organized, coordinated and was ready to go. the information that u.s. officials have, they say, is that the iranian revolutionary guard corp troops boarded both ships and took them to iranian waters. now in the last several minutes, irans claiming that one of the ships was never boarded in a hostile fashion, that it was stopped for an environmental inspection and, in fact, maritime tracking website seemed to show one of the ships now back on track and is picking up speed moving to its original destination. but still by all accounts, a british flag tanker in iranian hands at this hour. and this is the concern, of course. this is billions of dollars of world trade shipping lanes moving through this r

let's get to barbara starr? >> two u.s. defense officials are saying a british tanker has been taken in the persian gulf. this is the petrochemical tanker, british flag. and a short time ago, iran's islamic revolutionary guard corps which is operating in these waters and behind many of these provocations announced that it had seized this tanker. so this is the second serious provocation in two days. yesterday we saw the u.s. have to deal with bringing down an iranian drone that came too close to a u.s. warship in the straig strait of hormuz. today we're now seeing once again by all accounts, a british flag tanker being taken by iran in this straight of hormuz persian gulf area. the question really becomes very rapidly, what happens now. these provocations are taking place with some frequency, it's a challenge for commercial shipping in this region, you know, this is an area where that is so vital with oil and petrochemical shipments, also, regular cargo shipments moving through this area, throughout the middle east these ar

barbara starr is joining me live with much more on this. hat are you hearing about this drone? >> good morning, kate. the president him schl laid it out yesterday at the white house saying that a drone, an iranian drone came within 1,000 yards of a u.s. navy warship, the boxer as it was traveling through the strait of hormuz. this was an unsafe distance that the u.s. tried to use radio calls to warn whoever was operating to make it move. it did not. and that is when u.s. marines used the advanced technology you see on board on uss box r, essentially electronic warfare for lack of a better description, frying the electronics of the drone to make it crash into the sea. iran came back today and said it never happened, they didn't lose a drone and suggesting that the u.s. may have downed its own drone. maybe people need to use their common sense to come to their own conclusion about the likelihood of the u.s. military accidently downing one of its own drones. but this comes as we see these really almost constant provocations by iran, the u.s. re

barbara starr outfront tonight. barbara what are you picking up about this. >> good evening, kate. day a another provocation and incident with the iranians. the u.s. navy warship boxer was moving through the strait of hormuz to go into the persian gulf when approached by an iranen drone. the drone came within 1,000 yards of the warship, deeming to be unsafe distance. the u.s. navy tried to roid whoever might be listeneding to back off. it did not. the marines swung into action and activated an advanced weapon they have that basically destroys the the -- destroyed the electronics of the drone. it crashed into the sea. the iranians say they have no missing drone. all of that said, over in saudi arabia, the u.s. now making plans to deploy 500, up to 1,000 perhaps u.s. troops to an airbus in the remote eastern deserts of saudi arabia. they want a secure airfield outside of range of iranian missiles so they can fly advanced fighters, patrol the gulf, the air skies have their own missile defense capability. it's another move on the part of the u.s. to continue to show its presence and sh

cnn's barbara starr joins us now from the pentagon. barbara, two questions for you.f which is what are we actually going to see on thursday? and is the pentagon and military leaders really thrilled to be doing this show that we'll see on thursday as the president talked about in his tweet? >> well, what you're going to be seeing a lot of are aircraft flying overhead. look, the general public likes to see military flyovers. you're going to see, according to our sources, the b-2 bomber. you're going to see the airplane that functions as air force one when the president is aboard. f-22s, f-35s, the air force's most capable new fighter jets. the navy flying its f-18 blue angel demonstration team. these are things that people like to see that we have not seen on july 4th in the past. as for armored vehicles, there are at least two m-1 tanks and two personnel carriers in the washington, d.c., area. i am hearing they are still trying to figure out how to get these very heavy vehicles down city streets and onto the mall and whether all of that can really be done safely witho

barbara starr is at the pentagon. anything like this. >> imagine morning roll call at camp pendelton and suddenly 16 marines on the spot pulled out of line and arrested. the charges, the allegations against them are human smuggl g smuggling, drug use, drug allegations, all of it. they were arrested, detained on the spot. eight other marines are being questioned for their potential drug violations. now, all of this growing out of a previous marine investigation. marines arrested earlier this month for smuggling undocumented migrants into the country not related to the southern border mission. but look, this is just the start of a number of things that we're learning about. we also learned yesterday that an elite navy s.e.a.l. team was kicked out of iraq by their own leader, sent home for allegations of illegal, of course, consumption of alcohol in a war zone. another navy s.e.a.l. team, allegations coming to light that they face disciplinary action for using cocaine. a lot of questions at the end of the day about wheth

barbara starr is with us now. do we know where the ship was from. >> we do not. the iranians are not saying that much publicly. the u.s. is wondering, speculating, probably wondering is a better word, if this ship is actually the tanker that disappeared over the weekend that the u.s. had been looking for to see what its fate was. there was a small tanker that went into iranian waters. the u.s. was not certain what circumstances took it there. but iran at one point had said it had helped tow this small disabled tanker and now, suddenly today, they're saying they seized a tanker that was involved in smuggling. not exactly clear if they are the same ship. >> another part of this, as tensions with iran remain high, the u.s. is sending more u.s. forces fo saudi arabia. explain why. >> 500 troops going to saudi arabia to an air base east of the capitol out in the remote desert there. they want to use the base as an area that they can fly jets from so they can patrol the region as deterrents against iranian aggression. but there will also be a patriot missile battery th

let's go to the pentagon of our colleague barbara starr joins us with the latest.e even know sort of what was the country of origin for this ship? >> reporter: nobody is exactly coming up and publicly stating the origin of the ship, what flag it was flying under or what exactly it was doing there. but the u.s. has noted since the weekend there was a small tanker that went messing that went into iranian waters. and they've been watching trying to figure out whether this is the same ship that essentially disappeared over the weekend and resurfaced. the iranians not being clear. at one point they said they'd helped tow an iranian ship into iran. and now they're saying several days later they have seized it. so adding a lot of mystery to lof this about the very murky business of sometimes shipping in the persian gulf. >> we know the u.s. already sent an additional carrier group to the gulf amidst tensions with iran. and now sending hundreds of ground forces to saudi arabia. how big now is the increase in the u.s. presence there? >> reporter: well, this is about 500 u.s
