so just the backdrop as we have this conversation with jerry diamond and barbara starr. barbara, let's start with what we know about this trip. do we know if he is still in country? >> i specif . >> i suspect that either he is about to leave or he already has. the trips are not announced and anyone traveling with him certainly is sworn to secrecy. it is very dicey business to get a president in and out of warzone. they come in on aircraft, they have to be protected in the skies at all time. usually there are helicopters and radars and other assets up for a full what you would call an air defense picture to protect against any possibility of the aircraft being shot at or the president's party being attacked on the ground. bagram air base, many of us have been there, it is a very interesting place. they have a long runway. it is heavily protected. there are not significant populations on several sides of that very large base. so it is not surprising that he would go there. it is a place where he can be much more readily protected and if they need to move him quickly in and

joining me now, barbara starr.rstand you've been speaking with the defense secretary, other reporters. what's the latest you're hearing? >> defense secretary mark es pechesper has just met with a small group of reporters to explain why the navy secretary was fired by him over the weekend. according to mark esper, the defense secretary, the navy secretary was engaged in back channel communications with the white house to try to basically assure while there might be a review of gallagher, he would get to keep, at the end of the day, his s.e.a.l. status, which was very important to him. and that's not what esper had been pushing for with the white house. esper had been pushing for letting the military justice system take its course. what's so striking here is spencer mentions none of this in his resignation letter, no mention that he was doing backchannel negotiations with the white house. esper says when he spoke to spencer over the weekend, he readily admitteded it and it was at that point esper told him he needed h

cnn pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins us now. what are you hearing from officials? >> reporter: one official long serving in the pentagon said we have a morale problem, a split. that's not what the military wants to see. the military reflects american society. you will have any number of troops always supporting a president of the united states. many troops feel this president does have their back. he's gotten them increased funding. he's getting them out of wars. the president has support among some troops, other troops, perhaps not. especially some of the senior commanders now as they are struggling to cope continuously with the president's erratic and very difficult to understand decision-making. you only have to look back maybe several weeks ago. he said about one of the soldiers involved in one of the war crimes cases that troops are trained to be killing machines, the president's words. they certainly are not. i doubt you would have troops wishing to serve in the armed forces where they are trained to be killing machines. all of this coming to a head over thes

joining us now barbara starr. complicated case, but at the end of the day to have a secretary of the navy say the president doesn't understand or agree on military discipline is really stunning. >> well, it is not something i remember happening around here any time recently. the closest we came, of course, was former defense secretary james mattis resigning because he felt he couldn't follow the president's orders on withdrawing troops from syria. that's what happens. if you're a seen official, southeaste senior uniformed or military, if you cannot follow the president's orders in good conscious you have to step down. this case is so wacky, i don't think there's any way to put it, spencer at the same time, according to defense secretary mark esper, who fired him yesterday, was engaged in a back channel negotiation with the white house to try and resolve the gallagher case, to let a review of his status as navy s.e.a.l. go forward but somehow have a guarantee ahead of time at the end of that review, which was suppo
