barbie, w.h.o.ials are speculating how omicron might become the dominant variant but most of the cases there have been relatively mild. what's the latest? >> europe is in the midst of the variant, but it's not omicron, it's delta. and in germany, they're predistincting 6,000 people in intensive care wards by christmas. no matter what they do. here in rome, the city officials have said we have to wear masks outside now in crowded areas which is very new and inconvenience, to say the least. but all of these things are working towards, you know, trying to mitigate the spread of delta. and in anticipation, really, for at arrival of omicron. and we've seen new restrictions in place there with the closing of nightclubs and new curfews on bars and things like that. but it usually is, in every case, the restrictions are those not vaccinated, on december 6th here in rome, negative covid tests will no longer be enough to get into an indoor dining place, you having vaccinated or you recovered from covid, kim.

cnn's scott mcclain is in london, and barbie nadeau is in rome. scott, the situation in the uk, we have large numbers of cases in the uk. again, as the story is elsewhere, the number of hospitalizations still remains low. >> that's absolutely right, richard. the number of cases is absolutely astounding. there aren't new numbers this weekend because of the holiday, but christmas eve this country set a new record for new infections. and the latest government estimates show that 1 in 35 people in england has the virus right now. in london, that number is even higher, 1 in 20. london is undoubtedly the omicron epicenter of this country. it also has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country. part of the concern is even if omicron is less severe, and studies suggest many my accounts it is, you could still have such a high number of cases that you'll end up with pressure on the health care system. perhaps the more pressing concern, though, right now is if you look at the number of health care workers who are calling in sick. take the end of nove

barbie nadeau joins us from rome. the measures being taken, it's incremental, anything but a lockdown. how would you say they reached the level in italy, as they accused the uk of lockdown by stealth? >> reporter: well, you know, a lot of people are self-locking down. you didn't see a lot of movement over the christmas period, over this weekend. restaurants weren't packed like they may have been in years past. they don't want to lock everybody down. the economy suffered so greatly in italy and across europe. so by just closing certain sectors, night clubs, those people aren't happy, but anything they can do to try to avoid the overall restrictions that we saw that were so strong here at the beginning of the pandemic. you've got a lot of people, especially in southern europe, taking it into their own hands. they don't want to return to that. they're doing a lot, acting responsibly, getting vaccinated, high vaccination rates here, getting boosted, getting their children vaccinated. the government doesn't want to close t

barbie nadeau joins me live from rome. so barbie, what's the latest on that catastrophe? >> they're still searching for survivors, hoping that there are people that they'll be able to pull out alive. but of course as time goes on, it always becomes more difficult to find survivors in these situations. this explosion devastated three buildings, but also damaged several others in this small town of about 10,000 people on the southern coast of sicily. there are about 50 people who aren't able to return to their homes. and what we know so far is that this was a gas explosion. wetriggered it, though. some reports say that it could have been someone using the elevator or some reports say that there could have been some seismic activity. but every 30 minutes, they're stopping the rescue efforts to listen and try to see if there's anybody calling for help. two women were rescued alive. one because she had her cell phone on her and was able to call and say where she was in this rubble. it's a devastating, devastating situation for this small town. everyone knew everyone there. it'
