you have written songs for so many legends, elton john, barbra streisand, aretha franklin and tina turnerr mind as a performer who you have had the pleasure of having your words sung by? >> i mean, she is the best of the best. what a sad loss for music today. you know, nobody -- she'll never -- there is no one that could ever compare with tina turner there was so much soul and strength in her voice. i wish she had done more of my songs. that song "don't turn around" ultimately started out as a b side with tina and became a hit later on for a group called ace of base. but just the fact that she sang a song of mine was the coolest thing in the world. because there is no one -- she's on top of mountain of great singers of all time in popular music. it's a huge, huge loss for music today. the world today. >> yeah. so few singers have the force and the range that tina turner did, just vocally alone. >> oh, yeah. >> here's what she had to say back in 1987 to larry king about the kind of music that she chose to perform. >> do you consider yourself rock 'n roll? >> yes. >> is that your -- that's

we spoke to american icon barbra streisand on their decades of friendship. >> i first met king charles prince charles. i was in a recording studio and it was 1974. we got a call that prince charles going to be in los angeles and wanted to meet me. i thought it was so sweet. we had a big 60 piece orchestra, i remember. we were in the control room listening to a playback of the song when you walked in. anyway, i happened to be walking a cup of tea to keep the vocal cords warm, you know? and, he was curious about the kind of tea i was drinking. so, i asked him if you wanted a taste. to my surprise he took a sip. i thought it was very charming and it made me immediately like him. we spoke like two regular people just getting to know each other. king charles and i share a number of common interests. we are both perpetual students of art, architecture, and design i think end of course we both love music. and i should thank him. i heard that he put together his favorite desert island discs and included do not ride -- rain on my parade. i made the king's playlist. how about that? thank you, yo

we also owe a debt to barbra streisand because she established the legend of this show that could notthis? >> the most important thing is the audience, that when you're in a run, and i've now done 250 performances, truth to tell i have a music stand stage right and stage left with the scripts, so i do the show twice a night. i do it at that study stand to get in the tunnel. then i go and try to knock it out of the park on the stage. because this is somebody's first broadway show and this is somebody's last broadway show. i owe it to them. the black velvet of the houses in new york, we have 1283 seats. i've played philly, boston, london, sydney, johannesburg. ain't nothing like the new york audience. new york audiences are hot. people come in from all over the country to see us. it is our job to deliver, to move them, to give them a story well told around an ancient campfire called the theater. and we're live. you can get away with a lot less when you're live. >> i want to ask you about the memoir you wrote. it's a mother/daughter story, and it does tie into the character you're playin
