barnaby. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. aid has started arriving here in the central philippines. this is the reason it was battered by typhoon haiyan. the cargo plane has just arrived. the u.s. has sent a plane load of equipment but can't help clear the roads for aides to get to millions of people. in tacloban city, millions have lost their homes, they're sleeping under pouring rains, they do not have enough food and water so they've been looting the grocery stores. there is another that just made landfall in the southern philippines and it's bringing thunderstorms to the region as well. it's already hampered relief efforts. now stranded in ports here at the air base, soldiers continue to load relief goods on military aircraft, though it's unclear whether they can get to tacloban city. >> barnaby, i know you had a hotel close to the shore. tell us what you the experience was like when the typhoon came ashore. >> reporter: it was the most terrifying experience of my life. the winds were not just howling. usually, winds from

cbs producer barnaby lo is on the phone from the island. barnaby, good morning. how are you? >> good morning, anne-marie. i'm okay. but the city is a whole different story. the first batch of aid from the u.s. has arrived in the philippines and it is on its way now to the central philippines, the region hardest hit by typhoon haiyan. it's carrying two trucks and a forklift. this equipment will definitely be helpful in clearing the roads, which is impaerative so relief can hit the hardest hit areas. right now hundreds of thousands of survives especially in the city of tacloban are running out of water. because of this, there's looting. i spoke with a family who to told me they came from tacloban. they told me their grocery store had been ransacked and that looters had threatened their lives. they also told me at least seven people had been killed by looters in one of the biggest malls in the city. so the situation in tacloban city has gone from desperate to danger riis and that's why the region has been declared an emergency. there's one good piece of news. a 21-year-old mothe
