the original barn, the barn that is there today, the red barn, is after 1882. here is the emmitsburg road. we see old photographs of the park road, and they look very nice. imagine the roads. they were either muddy when it rained, or dusty, dry, and filled with potholes. of course, the soldiers marched great distance ticket to gettysburg, and it is often hard to get your mind around some of the roads. here is a drawing of the road from the 1880's. this is our only illustration that exists of the rogers house, which is on the right. he also shows in the background the sherfy barn on fire. we are looking south on the emmitsburg road. in reality, if you stand at this location today, you cannot see the sherfy farm from the rogers house. it is actually round the bend. we will give them some artistic license, though. this is the best we can do for what the rogers house may have looked like. it was torn down and rebuilt. but we do have a photograph of the rogers family, peter rogers and his wife. that is another thing that i think i was really into when i was younger.
