is that going to fit barnicle?s mine. >> let's talk about what you're doing right now. we can start with gun control in the state of delaware. just talked about the national conversation. you put out a package of five gun control measures. where does that stand right now and how difficult has it been to get some of stuff through? >> first of all, it's really less about gun control and more about common sense proposals to reduce gun violence and keep weapons out of the wrong hands. we introduced five proposals as you say. one, universal background check. got out of the house committee last week. and expect taken up in the full house tomorrow. overwhelming public support but doesn't make it easy in the legislature. we have continuing work to do to educate the legislature on that bill and other bills as well. >> you phrased it as a disconnect between the public, voters and people serving in the legislature who were voted into the legislature by this very same public. is there any rational explanation for this disconne

mike barnicle and george weigel, nbc news vatican analyst. i want to start with mike. as a fellow american generalist and a catholic, what is your -- how surprised were you by picking this guy known for social justice and for humility and for really looking out for the little people to use the phrase we often use? >> well, you know, chris, i was -- i was actually stunned by two things. and one i had forgotten. i had forgotten about the theater of the church. the explosion of people in st. peter's square. the universe yalty of the church. the fact that not everyone in st. peter's square was catholic. and the fact that the curia, college of cardinals, selected a jesuit as our next pope to me was very surprising. and very encouraging, actually. despite the fact he's 76 years of age, a little older than i think a lot of american catholics expected the next pope to be in terms of age, he is a jesuit. and in terms of what the jesuits are and what they profess, the faith that they have, the faith that they preach, the faith that they practice, social justice. economic justice

i want to ask david and chuck, first i'll quote the great mike barnicle who said sequester is latin forut let me ask you guys, coming into this, there were a lot of debates about -- coming into the sequester about who had political lemppli political leverage. republicans thought they had a certain amount of leverage. now we're past this day, and we're heading into some other things, right? the continuing resolution, the debt ceiling coming up over the course of the next couple months. what happens in terms of leverage now going forward? who has the whip hand coming out of this and heading into those big battles? >> i don't happen to think it's clear. because the one thing that republicans have proven here is that they may not like it, but it's at least on their side of the column. if they want to force the president's hand on more spending cuts, the sequester, the white house's idea to force an outcome different from this is what they can allow to prevail. they're not going to win points in terms of the standing of congress, but the feeling is that they can withstand that because becaus
