he's blaming it on barr and barr is out there saying it's not true.e the claims. how do you see this? >> there is two things going on here. those that want donald trump's blessing, those aspiring to higher ups on the republican side. they're repeating his language. bill barr is trying to revise history. he's reminding us that late in the game he did stand up and say there was no evidence of election fraud. what he's leaving out and i do not leave out of the book is that bill barr used his position as attorney general, the most powerful prosecutor in the country to fan those flames, to push the false narrative of election fraud. i don't think he can be forgiven for that. i don't think that can be forgotten. >> he was doing it publically. he was not doing it legally. legally he was telling the president and others there is nothing there. it is all b.s. in public he didn't. in fact, he mischaracterized a valid case in texas in an interview right here on cnn. take a look. >> elections that have been held with mail have found substantial fraud and coercion

trump had with then attorney general bill barr.ident would lose and he was going to lose the upcoming election and told him that straight up in a private meeting in the oval office. saying "i feel you are going to lose the election." barr said "i feel like you are losing touch with your own base." barr was fed up watching the daily covid briefing, remember those free wheeling on discipline to say the least and president trump's frequent attack on political enemies. what's interesting here president trump's kind of uncharacteristic response. he was reportedly oddly silent, not interrupting or trying to regain the floor as he usually did. the president had listened without emoting for a long time. he did not ask any questions. he did not push back. now, the book says, as barr's spiel came to an end, trump nodded and said he appreciated the advice. barr left hopeful that the president had really taken his message to heart, but he couldn't be sure. we now know the answer to that. i should note msnbc has not verified this account. i bri

does this shed any new light on barr leaving? >> barr left shortly before christmas.ow, jake, it's not unusual for attorneys general to depart an administration before the last day. but barr was seen as a very loyal deputy to former president trump. but his last few weeks in office were pretty rocky because he and the president just were not aligned on this issue of election fraud. we know in early december barr came out and undercut former president trump's message on this by saying that the justice department had not found any evidence of large-scale voter or election fraud that would change the results. directly undercutting the message that the former president was putting out. even after he left office he's continued to have to defend himself against allegations from the former president that he tried to block investigations. but it's clear the president was not deterred when he encountered this resistance from his attorney general and moved on to acting top justice officials. >> let's discuss this now with andrew mccabe, cnn commentator, former fbi director who

you've written a new book on the legacy of former attorney general bill barr. you write that barr brought to the attorney general's job a dangerously distorted conception of his own power to impose that social order on what he saw as the needy, dim-witted masses. explain that point of view as you see it and what effect it had on the doj's work? >> jim, going into writing this book and i knew and it was clear to a lot of people that bill barr was dishonest, had lied to the american publix and he absolutely played politics with the justice department. we saw him do that again and again to protect donald trump and his allies. what struck me as i researched the book, bill barr has been a real culture warrior. we found things he wrote and said back in the 1990s about the need to impose, and i quote, god's law on our society, on our governmental institutions. when he took office as attorney general, he really went about in this sort of extreme way striking back against what he called secularism, meaning non-religious government. he said back in the '90s, it's my miss

the quotes that make barr look good. accounts that make ivanka look good, spending hours trying to get her dad to react to 1/6, even the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, give people a reader's guide as to how this works and why we shouldn't blame the authors who are straight up interviewing these folks. >> you want to put everything in context, right, and you want to put it into the context of what people say now they were doing behind the scenes and what they were doing in public. if they were doing things in public that advanced and enabled attacks on our democracy, that should not be forgotten. even if there's a credible account of them trying to do something helpful behind the scenes. one thing that surprised me, though, i got to say, brian, some people are trying to burnish their reputations. there are a lot of people who are double down on what they did during the trump administration and their support for former president trump now in ways that i found surprising since the january 6th attacks, the fact that

barr continued, i think that if you wanted to you could walk into a second term, covid and all.o down in history as an amazing president, and it is yours for the taking, but it is about you and you're turning off enough people to lose this election. that's according to the book. trump later claimed barr went soft. some might say he was being realistic. what does this tell you? >> well, first of all, joe, it tells me that a lot of members of the trump administration, senior members are basically trying to save themselves right now by saying, oh, i warned him, i said if he doesn't change his ways, if he doesn't change his behavior that he's going to lose this election. of course, as we all know, all three of us now, phil rutger and carolyn are two of the best reporters in the business. they're getting a lot of folks willing to talk. if those folks aren't talking, people with firsthand knowledge of what those conversations entailed. but, look, this is a very close election regardless. we have a very divided country, as shermichael stated. but trump all along the way, we have to rem

so, this is a situation called guillain-barre syndrome. guillain-barre syndrome.is. it's -- it's often characterized by what's called an ascending paralysis. meaning, you may develop some numbness and weakness in your feet. and then, it sort of ascends up your body. and it can be quite alarming for people. i've seen patients with this, don. what they found was a safety signal, meaning out of 12.5 million people, roughly, that have received the johnson & johnson vaccine. um, about 100 of them. so about ten in a million had this sort of problem. this guillain-barre syndrome. most times, it does resolve. but i don't want to minimize this. it can be a few weeks, before people start to actually imp prove improve their symptoms. typically, men. typically, over the age of 50. which is you and i, i think, both of us. but it is rare, don. and one thing i want to just give some context here is that the chance of developing guillain-barre, after the flu, for example, would be higher than the chance of developing guillain-barre after this johnson & johnson shot. so again, i d

both the fda and cdc have received about 100 reports of guillain-barre syndrome. the cases are developed about two weeks after some patients got the shot. and most people developed, it was men, 50 yearolder, 95 of the reported cases were serious and did require hospitalization. in fact one person even died. but let's put it in perspective here. nearly 13 million doses of the johnson & johnson vaccine have been given out in the u.s. delta variant continues to spread, even here in the bay area. the variant is responsible for a large amount of the cases. marin county says since january about 70% of cases analyzed have actually been linked to the delta variant. they've found two cases of something called the delta-plus strain which may be even more infectious than the delta variant. county health leaders say the virus is spreading mostly among people who are not yet vaccinated. a couple other bay area counties tracking the delta variant include santa clara county. they've detected about 85 cases, sonoma county, 68 cases so far, just under 1100 cases. ucsf's dr. peter

trump regularly calling rosen, who was serving as the acting tomorrow because bill barr had just left the department and trump kept calling him and talking about this voter fraud and these various things he had heard and seen and that we wanted the justice department to pursue and rosen, who remember is just acting. these care-taker for what is supposed to be you know hopefully the quiet last weeks of the trump administration. and, obviously, it's anything but. and he's as has been described to us in these conversations, he's trying to be friendly and hear them out but not commit to anything. and a couple times we are told he tries to change the subject and is basically unsuccessful, because trump won't let it go. >> right. so, that's a key part of this, too. which there is a pattern here. this is a sustained effort, your reporting indicates as opposed to a one-off conversation? >> right. absolutely. and you can see also through his public statements that trump, he through the late half of 2020, trump keeps trying to throw the justice department into the argument she's making about th
