cnn's natasha barrett has more on this american hero. >> reporter: for years, vernon baker's wife didn'twar ii. baker's wife said he never spoke about the war until decades later, when the army lieutenant was awarded the medal of honor by president clinton. baker was the only living black world war ii veteran to receive the military's highest honor. >> 50 years he had to wait before he got the medal of honor. >> reporter: what do you think he would have said today? >> what he would have said, my husband was never a person for big crowds. he would have said, babe, here there are so many people. let's go home. >> reporter: baker's heroic actions in the war were finally recognized in 1996. an army study reevaluated the heroism of blacks in world war ii. baker learned about his medal of honor in a phone call. he passed away in july from brain cancer at 90. he was laid to rest at arlington national cemetery. >> i feel like i abandoned my husband. i have to live them behind, ands that the worst feeling. >> reporter: walking behind the medal of honor flag, three other recipients. at the burial,

we have a new story on the wire here from ted barrett, our congressional producer, and ed henry whom fact there's been talk that the white house might name her to the job as an interim head, which would mean that she wouldn't have to get confirmed by the senate. but today the chairman of the senate banking committee chris dodd said no way, don't do it that way. you need the institutional support for her and if you do it that way you, quote, could gut this before it even gets off the ground. back out on the campaign trail, you know we've got this hot race in delaware between an insurgent candidate and an incumbent congressman, mike castle. today our dana bash caught up with the man who heads the senate campaign committee and he made it very clear this race is the linchpin for them to take control of the senate and senate john cornyn also said that if she won whereby if christine o'donnell wins, then he would, quote, have to have a pow wow about whether the campaign committee would actually fund her candidacy against the democrat. so that's a big deal, ali. >> gloria, thank you so much
